Tisha’s Market Update
mckennahomes@telus.net
My Perspective......
Recently there have been several stories in the
media about “Canada’s housing bubble”. In my
opinion this is just not the case for our Calgary
market. Residential sales activity has increased
by 11% in Calgary over last year, and we are
also seeing a 15% price growth over 2011.
Where is Tisha???
Ramsay listings are continuing to move quickly,
and when priced aggressively, multiple offers
are not unusual.
For a free home evaluation or more information
about Ramsay’s local Real Estate market, please
Kevin Cunningham, President, R.C.A.
On behalf of the 2011-2012 RCA Board, we
wish to extend our heartfelt thanks for those
who attended, participated, and volunteered at
the AGM on October 2nd. It was an excellent
event. And not just because it was only thirtyseven
minutes in duration, or that we elected a full board,
but because everyone had time to relax afterwards and
socialize while nibbling on veggies and sipping a hot beverage.
I don’t think that anyone left for at least thirty minutes
after the meeting was adjourned.
I feel privileged to be serving our great community for a
second term, and extremely
lucky to be working with
this team of community
the next twelve months is
going to be revitalizing and
guide this board and future
boards to fully realize the
potential of our greatest
community asset: the Hall.
We are not going to do this
alone or in isolation. We
will be looking for your
Turn at the Giant Head
Nancy Janovicek
If you’ve walked by the green house on the corner of 22 nd Avenue and 8 th Street, you’ve
probably wondered why someone would have a giant bust of Vladimir Lenin in their back
yard.
“Wouldn’t you want him?” is Jennie Innendorfer and Scott Clark’s answer.
Lenny – Jennie and Scott’s nickname for the ten-foot head – has been a Ramsay landmark
for a long time. F & D Scene Changes (www.fdscene.com/) built him for Goldeneye,
the 1995 James Bond film starring Pierce Brosnan as the famous spy. You’ll see Lenny in
the scene when 007 meets 006 – Bond’s ex-colleague and antagonist in the film. Lenny
appears in the video game, too.
When shooting for the film wrapped up, the prop made its way back to Ramsay.
It was in the F & D lot until Max Matheney, the owner of the old SpaceGym,
bought it. For those who are new to Ramsay, SpaceGym was an old-timey gym
and art studio at the Ramsay Exchange before development began. (Check
out the article in the October 2004 newsletter in the archives.) It was the
kind of gym where you’d expect to see Rocky training. Scott used to
work out there, and he thought the massive bust of Lenin outside of
his gym was pretty cool.
When SpaceGym closed, Max asked Scott and Jennie to make
an offer to buy Lenny. They built a concrete pad in their back yard,
hired six “strapping Brazilian jiu-jitsu players” who trained at the gym
to haul him onto a flatbed truck. and then moved him to his current
home in their back yard. He was in rough shape when they acquired him.
His ear was damaged and graffiti taggers had left their mark. They found someone
to do the repairs, and he’s lived happily as their giant garden gnome since
then.
Some neighbours weren’t thrilled with the new view, but have come to accept
him as part of the streetscape. He was egged one Hallowe’en – though the pranksters
probably weren’t making a
political statement. Most of the
neighbours like having him in the
hood. One morning, Jennie and
Scott found an old Fast Forward
article about the Lenin head in
their mailbox. They’ve also heard
that when their neighbours
give their guests directions,
they tell them to to turn at
the giant head. He’s a curiosity
for people who don’t live in
Ramsay. Julias Von Bieberstein,
who lives across the street, told me
that it’s amusing to watch people’s reactions
when they walk by the huge head for the first
time.
Jennie and Scott enjoy looking out the kitchen window and seeing Lenin’s
profile. Jennie told me that it’s something that you could only get away with
in Ramsay. They moved to Ramsay because they wanted to be able to walk to
work downtown. They immediately fell in love with the history and character
of the community, and would never think of leaving. We have to hope that the
same will be true for Lenny. He took a beating in the big hailstorm this summer,
and they are worried that he’ll eventually erode due to bad weather. They
are looking for advice on how to protect him from the elements so that Lenin’s
head can stay in their yard and continue to intrigue and amuse people during
their walks through the hood.
A Word From the Classrooms!
Grade 2/3: Miss Pitts
The grade 2/3s have had a great start to the school year!
We kicked off September with a project in which we looked
closely at ourselves, and what makes us special. Students read
The Important Book, by Margaret Wise Brown, and used the
pattern of the book to discuss and write about what makes
them important. We then spent time looking closely at our
unique features, and created self-portraits using a variety of
materials. Please feel free to come up to room 7 and meet our
community of learners!
Students have also delved into a novel study with the
grade1/2 class, titled the Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane.
Students are exploring the principles of care through the story
of a china rabbit named Edward who has difficulty showing
others that he cares. Students have begun to do an analysis of
the many characters in the story, and how and why they did
or did not show care for self and others throughout the book.
What started as a simple reading of The Grouchy Ladybug,
by Eric Carle, has commenced our science units on small
crawling and flying creatures and animal life cycles. Students
connected the story to the many ladybugs they had been finding
on the schoolyard. Students have been exploring “What
is Beautiful” about ladybugs and other insects, studying their
anatomy and lifecycles,
as well as
exploring how they
help the environment
and our community.
We were also
lucky to work with
Judy Dofoo, a writer
and visual artist,
this week. Judy
has been giving us
the opportunity to
look very closely at
beautiful objects in
the world. Students
have been using
their visual journals
to think deeply
about how they
use their five senses
to observe objects.
A highlight of the
time with Judy was
looking closely at
poppy-seed pods.
find it: Pop-Ups in Inglewood and Ramsay
Sam Hester
You may have noticed them around the neighbourhood:
the red signs that suggest the Google Map marker.
Wherever you see them, something interesting is bound to be
happening. A new series of local “pop-up” art events called
“find it” is off to a raging start. But what is “find it” and why
is it happening in our neighbourhood? Here’s the story…
Back in November 2011, a roomful of intrigued Ramsay
and Inglewood residents huddled in a chilly gathering space
at “The Area,” where we’d been lured by Inglewood mover
& shaker Meg Van Rosendaal with her suggestion of creating
some kind of neighbourhood arts initiative. This idea resonated
with me right away. After all, there’s already so much
great stuff going on around here – music, art, film, design,
food, history – imagine somehow taking this
creativity, talent, and community spirit, and
turning it into something that people could
enjoy on a wider scale. A community project
with a “brand” that could animate the neighbourhoods’
public spaces…get people talking…
maybe even entice a few suburbanites
into the inner city! And what a way to foster
connections between Ramsay and Inglewood,
while we’re at it! I was sold.
Out of that first meeting, a non-profit society
was created in early 2012: The Vibrant Village Society of
Inglewood & Ramsay. And thanks to a generous grant from
Calgary 2012 and the Cultural Capitals of Canada Program,
we rolled up our sleeves and got started producing our first
program this past summer: a new series of events entitled
“find it: Pop-Ups in Inglewood & Ramsay.”
What are “pop-ups”? Temporary events or installations that
appear unexpectedly in everyday places to enliven public spaces.
They can be art installations, food and urban agriculture
events, music, dance, writing, spoken word, film, walking
tours, special events – basically, they can be the kinds of thing
that are going on all the time around these neighbourhoods,
already! In effect, we’re taking Ramsay and Inglewood’s rich
cultural scene and shining a light on it... a flashlight, as it
turns out!
Our first event took place during the Stampede, at the top
of Scotsman’s Hill. We couldn’t resist the idea of all those
folks sitting up there, waiting for the fireworks to start...
a ready-made audience. So we teamed up with Cowtown
Opera, who brought in some of their amazing performers to
astonish the crowd on the hill with flashlight-lit arias. Our
second event, in August, was the New Street Spoken Word
Safari, in which a selection of local wordsmiths (including
Kris Demeanor, Calgary’s inaugural Poet Laureate) appeared
at various locations along Inglewood’s New Street to offer
original pieces inspired by the street’s history and landmarks.
Next, we collaborated with Ramsay’s 23 rd Avenue Ladies’
Group, helping them to produce a community-based event
of their own: September’s 23 rd Avenue Artwalk & Street
Celebration. All along 23 rd Avenue’s two-block stretch, participants
set up homemade stalls showing off the residents’
artistic talents. A few neighbours from farther afield also
joined in the fun – such as the Crossroads Market, which
donated a market stall brimming with free fruits and vegetables
for artwalkers to take home. The artwalk was the
recipient of a $1200 Calgary 2012 Grassroots Initiative
Grant, which we used to purchase a community signboard
and an (artistically decorated!) garbage can, that are currently
installed at Double Elle Bakery.
Most recently, on September 29 th , “find it” produced yet
another free and fun event which took advantage of a great
neighbourhood landmark: “Food In Shorts: Full Moon Movie
Night at the Ramsay Rink.” On the night of the harvest
moon, neighbours gathered with lawn chairs
and blankets to take in a series of short films
curated by the Oscar-nominated, Inglewoodbased
filmmaking duo Wendy Tilby and
Amanda Forbis. One of the films was by
Ramsay’s own Andrea Mann. The event was
MC’d by John Rutherford and Julie Van
Rosendaal, and included: a really innovative
musical performance by Adrienne Weare and
the Vinaigrettes; a hands-on lantern-lighting
ceremony to wrap up the night; and what’s
becoming a trademark “find it” feature… flashlights, of
course!
So, now you’re dying to find out: what’s coming up next
for “find it”? After four events in three months, we may be
slowing down our pace a little bit. After all, despite our vision
for a year-round series that’s always coming up with something
fresh and exciting, we’re still a volunteer organization
made up of busy people. However, rest assured there’s more
to come – and who knows, maybe we can keep up this breakneck
pace… especially if a few new members jump on board!
Yes – “find it” wants you! What do we need from you? Your
ideas. Do you know a neighbourhood spot that’s just asking
to be turned into the site of a creative happening? A business
that would like to collaborate with us on an event? An
artist who would like to help celebrate the vibrant villages of
Inglewood & Ramsay? (Anyone – no matter where they live –
can be part of “find it”. The only restriction: the events have
to take place in our two neighbourhoods.) And of course,
we welcome new members to the Vibrant Village Society.
Contact us to find out how you can be part of shaping the
vision for future “find its”.
What else do we need? Your energy. Come out and volunteer
at the next event – help set up, take tickets, sell snacks,
put up signs. Get to know some neighbours! Get the inside
scoop on our creative scene! And enjoy the vibrant village!
An Update from Ramsay’s Urban Farmers
Luke Kimmel, Leaf Ninjas www.leafninjas.ca
My first year in Ramsay has been incredible. After
spending 2011 living and working at a house/garden site in
Inglewood, and the majority of my earlier life in the northwest
suburbs of Calgary, I am really happy to have put down
some long term roots in this vibrant and diverse urban community;
there is so much more interesting stuff happening
down here than in the suburbs! Its places like Ramsay and
Inglewood that make it easy and exciting for me to continue
to choose Calgary as my home base.
My name is Luke Kimmel, and I am one of the owners of
Leaf Ninjas – Urban Farm and Edible Landscaping. We live
and work in Ramsay where we cultivated four urban farm
sites this year, and another three in Inglewood, tending to a
total of 6,500 square feet of urban farm, or just over 1/8 of an
acre. Our first year of farming was a success, and I am excited
to share some of our story and vision with our neighbors.
I’m not sure exactly what it was that motivated me to start
farming. I had no farming background in my family, and
most of my life growing up I believed that farming was just a
lot of hard work.
The inspiration and motivation ended up coming from
multiple directions. I realized several years ago that I didn’t
have an understanding of where my food came from, or how
it was produced. For me that was eye opening, it caused a
perspective shift within me. To start I simply wanted to learn
more, to understand what was happening behind the super
market shelves. To say the least, the more I researched, the
more disappointed I became with industrial food. I knew that
something better had to be around the corner.
As an entrepreneur, I became a critical thinker and began
to notice trends that were happening inside and outside of
my entrepreneurial efforts in the clothing and arts industries.
I saw many people were trying to go green, or pretending to,
and I made the decision years ago that I wasn’t going to be a
pretender. This caused me to let go of many of my past businesses
and really search out how I could do a good thing for
people and the planet and still make enough money to live in
our modern world.
I think the real key motivation for me was the fact that
70% of our farmers are now over 55, and many of their kids
aren’t taking up the family business. So what does that mean
when these farmers retire in the next decade or two? Bigger,
more powerful food corporations taking over and more government
subsidies costing the taxpayer even more money? Or
simply less food for people to eat? Either way, I saw it as both
a problem and an opportunity, just like the many others who
are now partaking in the movement of Urban Agriculture
which is taking root all across North America.
Urban Agriculture is both a social movement and a diverse
and ‘growing’ collection of food production methods all based
on growing food in the middle of vibrant urban centers.
Growing food in the city is nothing new in a global context,
and Calgary itself even has a vibrant history of urban food
production, with the Calgary Horticultural Society at its peak
representing over 2,000 gardeners who cultivated over 3,000
empty lots during war times… that’s a lot more food than we
are growing on our comparatively miniscule 1/8 of an acre!
Our path into farming was trodden first by our mentors;
the likes of Rob Avis from Verge Permaculture (www.
vergepermaculture.ca), Curtis Stone from Green City Acres
(www.greencityacres.ca), and Rod Olson from Calgary’s
first urban farming company Leaf & Lyre (www.leafandlyre.
com) helped train us about soil, soil biology, plants, organic
growing, pest management, season extension, dealing with
Calgary’s wild weather, and much more.
This first year on our farm we grew almost 1,000 pounds
of delicious, healthy, and organic food. I have developed a
much deeper understanding of eco-systems and how humans
can work within them to make them a better place, and I
know I speak for all the Leaf Ninjas when I say that we have
been honored to work in the backyards of many of our community
members to put this knowledge into practice. Thanks!
This year we grew mostly lettuce, arugula, micro-greens
(pea shoots & sunflower shoots), spinach, and kale. We also
tried out carrots, beets, turnips, radish, and more exotic
greens like pursulane and mizuna. Most of our produce was
sold at the new Inglewood & Ramsay Farmers Market at The
Area, some of it was delivered to members of the community,
and a small amount went to caterers, as well as Without
Papers, Sugo, and the Naaco Food Truck.
We purchased a rototiller, a gigantic amount of seed, row
seeders for planting, harvesting and weeding equipment, and
even built our own 8 x 10 foot walk in cooler to keep our
produce fresh.
Though even more than what we produced and sold this
year, or the tools and infrastructure that we invested in, the
greatest value we gained from the year were our investments
in community relationships.
Farming in this community and getting to know many of
you through the process has really helped us develop a strong
sense of place, and a deep connection to the land on which
Ramsay is seated. For the first time in my life I can walk the
streets in my neighborhood and often run into people I know,
stop for a minute, and have a chat. Something about that just
feels right. I hope over the next year as both our Urban Farm
and Edible Landscaping practice grow that we will get to
meet many more of you through our work in the community.
Looking forward to the 2013 growing season, we have
already secured three more farm sites that will double our
land base to over 12,000 square feet, or just over a ¼ acre,
and we are still looking for more land, so if you or someone
you know is interested please contact us! We provide our
landowners with significant amounts of free food in exchange
for the use of their space. I wish you all a warm winter and
look forward to seeing you out and about it the community
come spring.
