Wheat breeding and research at the University of Saskatchewan is housed within the Department of Plant

sciences. Research is multi-disciplinary, with efforts in wheat breeding and genetics, genomics, pathology,

and end-use functionality of wheat. Conservation production and agronomic research are also a priority

within the department, including research on abiotic stresses like cold tolerance. Spring wheat breeding

and pathology research is conducted by the Crop Development Centre (CDC), with CDC scientists being

fully integrated within the Department of Plant Sciences. The Department of Plant Science has access to

state of the art phytotron and greenhouse facilities and a local land base for field research activities. As

well, the Department manages the Grains Innovation Laboratory, which conducts cutting each research in

crop end-use functionality. The Department is heavily involved in training of undergraduate and graduate

students, and has several post-doctoral fellows working in the area of wheat genetics and improvement.

Overall description

NRC-Saskatoon focuses on innovative agricultural biotechnology research that improves Canadian crops and

human health. Genomics and marker development are key components of a successful strategy to advance wheat

genetic enhancement. NRC’s expertise and capacity in molecular genetics, genomics, and development of

breeding tools including doubled haploidy and markers will be deployed in collaboration with Agriculture and

Agri-Food Canada and the University of Saskatchewan to provide resources towards wheat genomics and the

elucidation of the genetic puzzle of this important crop. Resulting advances will be incorporated into Canadian

wheat breeding programs, and thus accelerate the development for wheat.

Overall description of

wheat research

CDC scientists conduct multidisciplinary research and integrate basic research with genetic improvement

of spring and durum wheat. Large-scale genomics projects are conducted at the Centre aimed at

developing useful selection tools for wheat breeding programs. Pathology and end-use quality research are

high priorities at the Centre, and are conducted in state-of-the-art facilities located in Saskatoon,

Saskatchewan.
