The Sceptre A Letter from the Principal - Dear Christ the King Families and Friends, Recently I have had the luxury of watching the Olympics—granted it is at three a.m. when I am feeding our brand new daughter Rachael. It has been inspiring not only to watch the athletes’ performances (how do they do a quadruple jump?!), but also to hear some speak about their journey to the Olympics. In forming the whole person, the physical is crucial, and the Olympic Games definitely highlight that physical excellence is expressed in top performance. Yet, what I noted most was how the athletes discussed their journey in the context of moral values and significant relationships. I consistently heard athletes, coaches and family members discuss the athletes’ love for what they do, the need for commitment to the point of sacrifice, and the hope of reaching personal best if not an Olympic gold. There are tragedies, disappointments, victories, and political statements. Even though the external symbol of success is a gold medal, what resonated in me was that their journeys were about believing in, striving for and hoping to connect to something (or someone) beyond themselves. Further, every athlete talked about the relationships, the community behind each of them, and who made it possible for them to “be there.” It struck me that even in the most unlikely places, the theological virtues of faith, hope and love abide. The mission of our school is to form our children within our faith tradition and to prepare them to give witness to the love of our Lord in our world. All are called to form themselves in light of the gifts given by their Creator and to help one another reach their personal potential. Some will do this through academic excellence. Many serve by peer tutoring, being a buddy to a younger child, or giving of their time or treasure. Others will demonstrate Christian virtues while competing on teams such as basketball, Forensics or Chess. Like the Olympics, the specific event is less important; what transcend all events are the head, heart and hands offered. What shines forth is not a medal but a strong sense of faith, hope and love. However it is also important to point out that what sustains these efforts are relationships, not individual performance. This is also true of our school. Parents honor our school community with their most precious gifts, their children. Every day the teachers and staff call forth a love of learning but more importantly a desire to serve God and others. Our parish and alumni provide support through prayer, volunteer hours and financial support. Undergirding every child’s presence at CKS is a community that believes in and hopes for their success; success being happiness which can only be found in faithful service to God. In every Sceptre, we want to show you how your support allows CKS students, families and faculty to model the journey of faith. You will see that in celebration of the accomplishments of our former students, the induction of students into the National Junior Honor Society, Catholic Schools Week, and the many ways our children serve the community that they are shaped by Christian values and relationships that will sustain them beyond a specific subject or grade. So while the Olympic Games are over in two weeks, the lessons learned from them and other life events have the potential to remain forever. It is our mission to show our children that what sustain us are not merely the victories we gain but the everyday practice of being who God calls us to be. These are the “golden moments” that shape our lives now and in the future. Dexter visited the class to talk about what he is giving up for Lent, one thing being cookies, and how hard it would be not to cheat. This spurred lots of “confessions” from the kindergartners of things they had done when “mom and dad weren’t looking!” Leave a Legacy . . .
