Welcome!
Welcome to the ASU. As a union member, you join
thousands of fellow workers who have come together to
support each other to build a strong voice in their workplace
and industry. ASU members work in service industries in the
public, private and community sectors. We work in:
Community services, the Water, Transport, Aviation and Information Technology
industries.
The ASU has a proud history of fighting and winning better working conditions
and wages for its members across all industries and campaigning for justice
wherever injustice prevails.
Your union is a democratic organisation. We believe in putting members first. Our
union is the strongest when we campaign together and everyone plays a role.
We are also there for when you most need support and we are an organisation
standing behind you. Our delegates and staff know about your rights at work
and will defend and support you if they are under threat.
You are also entitled to access many services that have been established through
partnerships with a number of organisations. These include free legal advice,

YOUR UNION: A DEMOCRATIC UNION
The ASU is a democratic union where members elect the leadership every 4 years.
Every member is entitled to stand for election and to vote.
All positions are directly elected by the members. The Branch Executive has
representatives of every division and oversees the operation of the union.
There are seven industry divisions and each of them has a Committee of
Management. The Committees of Management are made up of members who
work in your industry, and they make decisions about everything that directly
affects members in their industry.
When you join the ASU you will be assigned to one of these divisions:
• Social and Community Services,
• Water,
• Hunter Water,
• Transport,
• Airlines, Shipping and Travel,
• Information Technology,
• Ports

MEMBERSHIP: PAYING YOUR UNION FEES
Your union is run entirely from Union fees. These fees are used to support all of
the work we do. There are two payment options to choose from:
1. Billing your credit card periodically
Fortnightly/4 weekly/monthly/quarterly/half yearly/annually
2. Direct debit from your bank account periodically
Fortnightly/4 weekly/monthly/quarterly/half yearly/annually
(You can nominate your pay week)
Once you nominate your payment option, and frequency, you don’t have to do
another thing. The ASU membership department collects payments automatically
on the due date.
Some members have historically paid via payroll deductions. This method is being
phased out as it poses significant risk to your union as it can be taken away by
your employer at any time. Payroll deductions are also costly to administer and in
many cases employers are unreliable in transferring fees to the ASU. An electronic
tax statement is issued annually to members who pay their fees by direct billing
or debit. Remember your union fees are tax deductible.
ASU NON-MEMBER POLICY
Only financial members of the ASU are entitled to the benefits of being a union
member. By making payments on time and keeping your fees up to date means
that these services and support are available to you when required. Only financial
members are entitled to participate in decision making and vote on any issue.
From time to time, workers who are not union members will call the ASU when a
problem has already arisen at work and they want assistance. In fairness to our
existing membership, these new members are asked to make a one off payment
on joining of six months fees and are entitled to telephone advice only. This
ensures that our resources are spent on existing members.

INJURED AT WORK?
The ASU offers advice and support on workers compensation with referral to our
solicitors should a member’s case warrant this. The ASU provides specialised
assistance and advice in relation to all WorkCover matters, particularly in relation to
lodging a claim, support with conciliation, Return to Work plans involving
modification of duties, timetabling and work environments. Lump sum claims for
permanent injury and negligence cases are also managed by the union’s solicitors.

WEBSITE
The ASU website www.asumembers.org.au is the first point of reference for
ASU members. It is designed into industry specific sections, so that members can
easily access information relevant to their industry. Just click on your industry tab:
SACS, WATER, TRANSPORT, IT, AIRLINES. In your industry section you will find the
latest news, and current campaigns.
The website also has a members’ only area where you can log on with your
membership details and access Awards and EBAs, current rates of pay, fact
sheets, industrial legislation and a delegates handbook.
PUBLICATIONS
The ASU publishes bi-monthly newsletters specific to each of our industries:
SACS News, Water News, Trans News, Onesky News and Short Circuit. These
newsletters keep you up to date with what is going on in your division of the
union, the overall union and the movement in general. Your industry news is
delivered electronically to those who have provided us with their email address or
alternatively by post.
In addition, Care Professional is a major journal, published quarterly, that covers
professional issues associated with the social and community sector. It is sent to
members four times a year. All our publications can be viewed online at our
website www.asumembers.org.au.

DELEGATE TRAINING
ASU Delegates are the most important people in the
union. They play an important role in representing the
views of members to their employer and handling
grievances or disputes.

RECOGNITION AWARDS
The Fran Teirney Medal
The Fran Teirney Medal will be awarded each year and will honour the contribution
made by Fran Teirney to the ASU. Fran was the President of the SACS Division from
1993-2009, the Treasurer of the union and member of the Branch Executive. The
medal is awarded to an ASU member from the SACS Division who is judged by the
SACS Committee of Management to have:
• Demonstrated an outstanding commitment to the work of social and
community services.
• Proven themselves to be a dedicated and committed unionist.
• Demonstrated outstanding leadership in the industry or the Union.
Each year the SACS COM will call for nominations by members and the winner
will be determined by the SACS COM.
The Barry Rule Honour Roll
Barry Rule was the Transport Division President from 2003-2007 as well as President
of the Union. The Honour Roll is awarded each year and will honour the
contribution of Barry Rule to the ASU. The Honour Roll will be awarded to an ASU
member from the Transport Division who is judged by the Transport COM to have:
• Demonstrated outstanding commitment to the Transport Industry.
• Proven themselves to be a dedicated and committed unionist.
• Demonstrated outstanding leadership in the industry or Union.
The Honour Roll will be perpetual and the recipient will be awarded a replica.
John Tierney Trophy
John Tierney was the Assistant Secretary of the ASU from 1991-2005. The Trophy
we be awarded each year and will honour the contribution of John Tierney to the
ASU. The Trophy will be awarded to an ASU member from the Water Division
who is judged by the Water COM to have:
• Demonstrated outstanding commitment to the Water Industry.
• Proven themselves to be a dedicated and committed unionist.
• Demonstrated outstanding leadership in the industry or Union.
The Trophy shall be a perpetual trophy and the recipient will be awarded a replica.
