Welcome

My name is Louis Baker. I am the partner who heads the

Professional Practice group within Crowe Clark Whitehill.

As Chair of our own Supervisory Board, I have a

particular understanding of the complex challenges

faced by professional practices. Whether it is tax

planning, statutory audit, advice on practice funding or

structure, we offer you the very best expertise, delivered

by people who act as true partners to your firm operating

with independence.

Our team has the capabilities and capacity to take on

even the biggest challenge, yet the breadth and depth

of our expertise is only part of what we offer.

We take pride in building long-term relationships.

We believe that listening and learning about your

practice, its strategic direction and what keeps you

awake at night is crucial to making sure you get the

best possible advice and services.

I hope that this brochure will give you an overview of

what we do, how we are different, and how effectively

we could work together.

In more detail

We work with our clients to understand

their business and aspirations so that

we can apply our knowledge to create

value that is specific to our clients’ needs.

Case study 1

Crowe Clark Whitehill was recommended to a

struggling four-partner firm whose senior

partner wanted to retire.

Through a number of sessions with the

partners, the partner was able to draw out

the key issues and weaknesses affecting the

business and discuss ways of addressing the

problems. We helped the partners to redefine

the sustainable competitive advantage of the

firm and to set out short- and long-term action

plans and a direction for the future, including

setting up project teams to move things forward

and to monitor progress.

The senior partner was able to retire knowing

that the firm has returned to profit and looks well

positioned for future growth.

Case study 2

Marks & Clerk are the UK’s largest firm of patent

and trademark attorneys, and one of the world’s

leading firms in this sector.

As part of their expansion in Europe and the Far

East, we helped them establish a tax-efficient

structure covering countries with a variety of tax

regimes. The tax position of local partners and

operational requirements have driven local

operating structures on which our Crowe

Horwath International colleagues have advised.

We have agreed steamlined reporting on the

international entities with the UK tax authorities

to ensure that the tax-efficient structure is not at

the cost of complicated tax filings.

With our support, Marks & Clerk have a flexible

blueprint which will help their continued growth

around the globe.

Quality of service

Crowe Clark Whitehill is highly regarded

both by clients and within the profession.

This reputation is endorsed by the fact that

we are trusted adviser to other firms of

leading advisers.

For Accountancy Age’s 2010 Finance 360

survey, over 600 financial directors and

controllers were asked to rate their last audit

service across five distinct areas of excellence:

accessibility and communication; technical

skills; understanding of the client’s business;

transparent and fair billing; initiative and added

value. Crowe Clark Whitehill was rated second,

placing us ahead of the largest UK firms.

We performed well in all areas and in ‘transparent

and fair billing’ finished a clear first, beating the

market average by 9%.

Perhaps our greatest endorsement comes from

the people we serve most — company financial

directors. We won the Mid-tier Auditor of the Year

in 2005, 2009 and 2010 at the Financial Directors’
