Helsinki again hosts the
New products for
stopover passengers
Helsinki Airport served over 12 million passengers
in 2009. The airport has developed into a major
hub for passenger flights between Europe and
Asia. The tourist bureaus of Espoo, Helsinki and
Vantaa have initiated a new regional tourism
project in co-operation with Culminatum Oy, the
development company for the Greater Helsinki
region. The aim of the project is to develop new
excursion packages that would allow stopover
passengers travelling between Europe and Asia
the chance to see Helsinki.
Initially these new stopover products will be
introduced according to the needs identified by
Helsinki Region Tourist Information, which is situated
at Helsinki Airport. From 15 to 20 products
would be offered for both individual travellers and
small groups.
The regional tourist bureaus have drawn up quality
criteria according to which the products will be
selected and developed. These include capacity,
reservation channels, utilising service networks,
customer orientation and suitability for foreign
markets. In addition, the target groups will have
to be defined and their special needs taken into
consideration.
A product development period of three years has
been set for the project, although it is likely that
the first products will go on sale at Helsinki Region
Tourist Information already in summer 2011.
The strengths of each of the municipalities within
Greater Helsinki will support each other, offering
a diverse and interesting choice of excursions for
stopover passengers.
Film Location Finland and the Finnish Lapland
Film Commission organised in September a
familiarisation tour of potential filming locations
in Helsinki and Lapland for five leading film and
television professionals. The invited guests have
worked as filming organisers for numerous major
film productions that include Mission Impossible
3, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban,
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Devil
Wears Prada and Catch Me If You Can.
According to Sanna Kultanen, Project Manager
at Film Location Finland, the guests were extremely
satisfied with their visit to Finland.
“The objective was to increase awareness of
Finland among professional filmmakers in order
to attract more foreign productions to film here.
Films that reach a wide audience have a major
impact on popular conceptions about locations,”
Kultanen says.
The filmmakers were interested in both urban
and nature locations within Finland. Over the
past two years three French productions, three
German productions, one US production and one
Dutch production have been filmed here.
Film Location Finland is a two-year EU-funded
project whose aim is to augment the benefit to
Finland in terms of income, image and professional
skills from foreign audiovisual productions.
