FROM THE DESK OF BUDDY THOMAS
Did you
know?
Photos by Mike Valeri/the standard-times
n That Mike Rapoza of New Bedford High, above,
was the only player to run for a touchdown, throw
for a touchdown, catch a touchdown pass, kick an
extra point and convert a field goal during the 2011
season?
n That Trevor Leandro figured in at least one
touchdown (by scoring a touchdown or throwing a
touchdown pass) in 16 consecutive games in which
Dartmouth scored before the streak ended with
last year’s 21-14 loss at Fairhaven on Thanksgiving
Day? The Indians’ quarterback accounted for the
two extra points in that loss and finished his career
by scoring points or figuring in a touchdown in 17
of his team’s last 18 games – the exception coming
in a 37-0 loss at Barnstable last Oct. 14.
n That Old Colony has won its last three season openers and lost
all but one of its remaining games in the last three seasons? The
Cougars finished 1-9 in 2009 and 2010 and were 2-8 in 2011.
n That since the start of the South Coast Conference in 1985,
Apponequet has played perennial title contender Dighton-Rehoboth
in its second scheduled season game five times? The Lakers are
1-4 under that scenario, thanks to three straight losses since 2009.
This season, Apponequet will take on D-R in week 10 of the schedule
in Rehoboth.
n That Nate Michael led all area players with multiple touchdown
games last season – four. Several players shared the single-game
high of three. Michael and Tristenn Clark (GNB Voc-Tech) were the
only players to score four touchdowns in one game in 2010 and the
last player to score five touchdowns in one game was Jon Williams
of New Bedford in 2009. Jordan Todman of Dartmouth is the last
player to score six touchdowns in one game. He did that in 2007.
n That half of Fairhaven’s 26 touchdowns
last season came via the pass and three different
players threw scoring strikes ... Jared
Antil (6), Christian Braga (6) and Ryan
Baldwin, above, (1)?
n That last year’s 6-5 record was GNB
Voc-Tech’s first winning season in 20
years? The last time the Bears were over
.500 was back in 1991, when Paul Guilbeault
led the team to a 6-4-1 record.
n That Old Rochester has finished a
season with the numbers 7 and 4 in the
final total for four consecutive years?
After finishing the 2008 season with a
record of 7-4, Henry Quinlan’s crew has
limped through 4-7 records the last three
seasons.
n That Wareham was outscored in its
final two games last season by a combined
63-0 score, the only time in Dan
Nault’s 12-year head coaching career the
Vikings have been shut out in back-toback
weeks in the same season?
n That Ian Pratt kicked at least one
point-after-touchdown in 12 consecutive
games from Bishop Stang’s 2010 seasonopener
through last season’s opener
and converted at least one PAT in 16 of
the last 19 games in which the Spartans
scored?
how the coaches fare
Here are the win-loss records of the head coaches from the nine area schools. The information
includes: Coach’s name, school (years coaching), win-loss regular season and (postseason
record).
It looks like another two-horse race
in the South Coast Conference, but
this season’s race-to-the-wire finish
could feature two new horses.
Perennial front-runners Dighton-
Rehoboth and Apponequet are
expected to challenge again but only
for the show position as a couple of
also-rans a year ago are expected
to battle it out for win and place,
respectively.
Fairhaven, which has gone just
3-17 in Rudy Bulgar’s first two years
as head coach, has inherited the
favorite’s role in what is expected to
be a wire-to-wire race with a Wareham
team coming off a 6-4 season last year
and 1-10 in 2010.
Somerset and Bishop Feehan are
set to battle it out in what could
be another two-team battle in the
Eastern Athletic Conference, while
Bridgewater-Raynham and Dartmouth
take aim at the top spot in the Old
Colony League.
And who else but Brockton gets the
nod in the Big 3, with New Bedford
and Durfee battling for second place.
Here is a look at the conference races.
SOUTH COAST CONFERENCE
1. FAIRHAVEN: With two returning
quarterbacks (Jared Antil and Christian
Braga) who combined to throw a
dozen touchdown passes; a fleet-footed
running tandem of Billy Pires (9) and
Kobie Edwards (6) who combined for
16 of the team’s 26 touchdowns and a
handful of returning linemen, led by
two-way all-star Ryan Baldwin (6-3,
235), this team looks solid and should
be fun to watch.
2. WAREHAM: With the addition of
former Old Rochester running back
Elias Tobia (transfer), the Vikings
should be as strong as any team when
it comes to running the football. Darien
Fernandez and Charles Tranfaglia
carried the running load last year,
and both are back — along with
quarterback Anthony Abbott and a
handful of key linemen on both sides of
the ball. The defense allowed just under
30 points last season, but should be
much improved with several members
back for another season.
3. APPONEQUET: Nate Michael has
graduated, along with a host of key
offensive linemen, but younger brother
Matt Michael is ready to assume the
running load. If some of those holes up
front are filled, the Lakers could find
themselves in position to challenge. The
Lakers may not be championship-ready
just yet, but, under coach Bob Lomp,
they could eventually find themselves in
position to make a run.
4. DIGHTON-REHOBOTH: The
FROM THE DESK OF BUDDY THOMAS
how the conference races stack up
Falcons’ offense was gutted by
graduation with running backs Bryan
Rocha (14 touchdowns), Adam Benvie
(7) and Ethan Berry (3) carved from
the program along with starting
quarterback Jerry Whitmore and more
than a few key two-way linemen. But,
there’s still some beef up front with
Chuddy Nwachukwa (6-6, 315) and
Liam Hoye (6-2, 220) back, which could
help keep this team in the race.
5. OLD ROCHESTER: The Bulldogs
may not have any illusions of winning
a conference championship, but they
are looking to regain some form of
respectability after three straight 4-7
seasons. With a nucleus of young,
though somewhat inexperienced talent,
coach Henry Quinlan’s crew could
make things a bit uncomfortable for the
so-called conference contenders.
6. SEEKONK: New coach plus new
system usually equals question marks
and unless some of those question
marks turn into exclamation points, the
new-look Warriors may be looking at no
higher than a sixth-place finish.
7. GNB VOC-TECH: With Cory Ponte
leading the way and Trevor Mena ready
to fill the role of supporting player,
the running game appears to be in
good hands — especially when it will
be running behind an underrated line
led by the not-so-underrated Dakota
Whoriskey, a 6-1, 270-pound beast at
the tackle spot.
8. BOURNE: After winning the
conference last season, the Canalmen
were hit hard by graduation; the
knockout punch dropping high-scoring
mike valeri/the standard-times
Anthony Abbott leads a Wareham offense that Buddy Thomas predicts will
contend for an SCC title.
Joe Epps from the backfield. Epps can’t
be replaced, and with just a handful of
players returning for another season,
the Canalmen are probably looking at a
rebuilding year.
9. CASE: The Cardinals are back
after playing a two-year independent
schedule in an effort to get their
program back to where it once was.
There is talent sprinkled throughout
the roster – led by quarterback Taylor
Furtado and running back Logan
Walmsley – and with a veteran coach
(Dave Morgado) that will develop more
talent, this team should, at least, be
competitive.
EASTERN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE
1. SOMERSET: With their largest
turnout in years and the return of
three battle-tested weapons (Mike
Garrant, 12 touchdowns; Cole Stafford,
5 touchdowns and John Melchert,
2 touchdowns) in the backfield, the
Blue Raiders appear ready to replace
perennial power Bishop Feehan at the
top of the standings.
2. BISHOP FEEHAN: The Shamrocks
lost a bevy of talent from last season’s
championship team, including
quarterback Andrew Murphy, running
back James Corbesero and a host of big
offensive linemen. But the talent well
rarely runs dry here, and there appears
to be plenty left to keep this year’s team
in contention.
3. MARTHA’S VINEYARD: Like
the Shamrocks, the Islanders were
hit hard by graduation, but new
talent emerges every season and
this year should be no exception.
Alec Tattersall (3 touchdowns) could
replace the graduated Delmont Araujo
at quarterback if he doesn’t play the
running back position and the Islanders
have five returning linemen who
weighed in at 220-or-better last season.
4. BISHOP STANG: First-year head
coach Ryan Sylvia is installing a new
system that — hopefully — will produce
more positive results at Spartan Village.
The one big plus Sylvia has is the
return of Charlie McKeeman, a 6-3, 200-
plus pound package of dynamite who is
explosive out of the backfield and blows
people up from his linebacker position
on defense.
5. COYLE-CASSIDY: The Warriors are
getting better, but still have a long way
to go to seriously compete for a title in
this highly-competitive conference.
OLD COLONY LEAGUE
1. BRIDGEWATER-RAYNHAM:
Graduation chipped away several key
components from last year’s 8-2 team,
but the Trojans have a way of filling
gaps on an annual basis. Size is always
there and this year is no exception.
2. DARTMOUTH: Coach Rick White
has a host of talented returning players,
including the outstanding tandem of
Mitch Loranger and Tim Smith. They
combined for 17 touchdowns last
season – 11 by Loranger. There’s also
plenty of beef and experience on both
lines, enough in fact, to help the Indians
make a serious run at the league
championship.
3. BARNSTABLE: The defending
champions lost record-setting quarterback
Doug Crook (76 career touchdown passes)
and a host of linemen to graduation, but
return Nick Peabody, who threw 10 TD
passes in the five games Crook missed
because of injury, and kicker Tom Mullen
who kicked four field goals and converted
41 PATs, with at least two in all 11 regularseason
games.
BIG THREE
1. BROCKTON: They’re big, bad
Brockton, with emphasis on big, which
usually helps the Boxers distance
themselves from the rest of the field.
Nothing has changed this season.
2. NEW BEDFORD: The Whalers can
throw the ball (Mike Rapoza) against
any team, but a lack of size up front
doesn’t bode well against bigger teams
who love to pound the ball.
3. DURFEE: Much improved is the
word out of Fall River and coming off a
1-9 season, the Hilltoppers should have
no trouble going up ... except, in the
conference standings.
MIKE VALERI/The Standard-Times
Rapoza to lead young New Bedford team
By LAURIE LOS
laurielos@s-t.com
NEW BEDFORD — If last season is
any indication, good things happen for
the New Bedford High football team
when the ball is in Mike Rapoza’s
hands.
In 2011, the versatile playmaker did
a little bit of everything on offense
– rushing, receiving and passing for
touchdowns. He finished with more
than 1,000 all-purpose yards and
scored 51 points. He also contributed
on defense and special teams.
More important to New Bedford
head coach Dennis Golden is the
example Rapoza has set on and off the
field as one of the team’s leaders.
“He’s a leader for us so we just
feel comfortable having him there,”
Golden said of this year’s starting
quarterback. “He’s been in the battles
before and he’s incredibly positive and
incredibly hard working. The other
kids seem to rally around him.
“I think he loves to play. He just
gets out there and does it. He brings
that competitiveness and joy of just
playing. That’s a great thing. That’s
contagious and that’s what we need.”
Having started three of the last
four games in 2011 at quarterback,
Rapoza provides stability at the
position, which is a big help
considering how hard the Whalers
were hit by graduation, losing
several key skill players and nearly
the entire offensive and defensive
lines. Seniors Darius Gaylor and
Tyler Arena and sophomore Douglas
Pimental are the only starting
linemen back.
“We have wholesale changes up
front so we’re depending on these
guys to come on and do a great job for
us,” Golden said. “We have some guys
who have some experience and we’ll
lean on them heavily. Everyone has to
pull their weight and we’ll get it done.”
Arena knows the key to New
Bedford’s success starts with the line.
“On offense as a unit we have to
work together and block and hit our
assignments or else Mikey (Rapoza)
goes nowhere,” he said. “It’s important
that we work as a team and stay
together.”
Expect to hear senior Mike Lajoie’s
name often during games as he’ll split
time at wide receiver and running
back, giving the Whalers another
scoring threat.
“Mike Lajoie is going to be the
handy man,” Rapoza said. “He’s going
to be everywhere.”
“He’s good with the ball in his hands
so we’re going to get it to him in a
whole bunch of different ways,” Golden
said of Lajoie. “Sometimes that will be
lining up as a receiver and sometimes
lining up as a running back. He’s done
a nice job with it.”
Golden also likes what he has seen
out of the backfield from junior TJ
Hernandez and sophomore Hector
Diaz.
“TJ has made some nice cuts,”
Golden said. “When we’re running the
zone, he knows how to plant his foot
in the ground, make a cut and get up
field.
“Hector just runs hard all of the
time. He’s a small guy in terms
of height, but he’s big in terms of
strength and heart. He just runs very
hard and he’s hard to tackle. They kind
of change it up a little bit so it’s good.”
Three transfers – Steven Azor
(Dennis-Yarmouth), Lord El, Jr.
(Sandwich) and Alonzo Guillaume
(Georgia) – could also have an impact
for the Whalers, who will try for their
third straight playoff appearance this
fall.
“We’ve got to play hard the whole
season and see where that takes us,”
Lajoie said. “We have a lot of potential.”
Rapoza said he can’t wait to show
what the Whalers can do.
“I’ve been waiting for this for a
long time, since freshman year,” he
said. “We’re ready for this. We’re
ready to win.”

DARTMOUTH — Ryan
Sylvia is exactly where he
wants to be. Now, the firstyear
head coach will try to
elevate his Bishop Stang
football team to where he’d
like it to be.
“We’ll take each game one
at a time and put our best foot
forward every week,” Sylvia
said as he prepared his team
for the season opener against
visiting Dartmouth High
School.
Taking over for the retired
Bill Kavanaugh, Sylvia
inherits a program that hasn’t
had a winning record since
2007 and a team that lost
its first five games en route
to a 3-8 record a year ago.
Fortunately for Sylvia, he also
inherits Charlie McKeeman,
a 6-foot-3, 215-pound senior
who was named The Standard-
Times Defensive Player of
the Year and scored five
touchdowns after moving to
the running back position late
last season.
“We’ve installed a new
offense that will primarily
feature the run and he
(McKeeman) will be very
much involved,” said Sylvia,
who also serves as the
school’s athletic director.
“We will throw the ball on
occasion, but our strength is
in the running game and that’s
what we want to feature.”
Last season, only four of the
team’s 18 touchdowns came
via the pass and, of those 18
touchdowns, McKeeman and
Luc Sauve combined for a
dozen. Both are back.
While the plan calls for
McKeeman to get his share of
carries, Sauve’s role remains
undefined. “He could play
quarterback (Mike Pratt is
listed as the current starter)
or he could play halfback with
Charlie moving to fullback.
We’re still debating what
we’re going to do because we
have options,” Sylvia said.
Until McKeeman was
moved into the backfield,
last year’s offense struggled
mightily to produce points
as the Spartans managed
a total of just 39 through
their first eight outings (1-7).
With McKeeman and Sauve
sharing the running load,
the pair combined for eight
This year’s starting offense
features a mixture of seniors
and underclassmen with
the leadership provided by
McKeeman and returning
senior co-captains Nate
Sobral (6-0, 220) at center
and Clayton Lemos-Martin
(5-8, 247) at guard. “The
leadership, in general,
should come from a good
group of seniors and we have
several returning letterman
– not necessarily starters,
but people who had enough
playing experience to earn a
letter – which gives us some
depth,” Sylvia said.
But, is there enough talent
to end the current string of
losing seasons and possibly
even make this team a
conference contender?
“Everyone on this team has
talent,” Sylvia said. “If a player
brings it, our job (as coaches)
is to help bring that talent
out and make the pieces fit.
A player may have enough
talent to be a starter or his
talent may be more suited
for a spot on the scout team.
Whatever the level of talent a
player may have, he’s making
a contribution to his team.
How much talent do we have?
We’ll see.”
New Bishop Stang coach Ryan Sylvia has installed a new offense that will focus on the run. “Our strength is in the running game
and that’s what we want to feature,” he said. Guard Clayton Lemos-Martin, below, will help pave the way for the runners.

Dynamic duo
in backfield
By LAURIE LOS
laurielos@s-t.com
DARTMOUTH — One is a big, grinding
power back. The other is more about finesse
and speed. Together, Dartmouth’s Mitchell
Loranger and Tim Smith form one of
SouthCoast’s most explosive backfields this
fall.
“Mitch is more of the smash-mouth running
back that goes up the middle and I kind of
take it outside and down the sideline,” said
Smith, a junior who came on strong toward
the end of last season, rushing for nearly 300
yards and five touchdowns in the last three
games.
Smith’s contributions were a nice
complement to Loranger, a senior, who
finished second in the area in rushing last
year to Apponequet’s Nate Michael with 98
carries for 951 yards and 10 touchdowns.
“We need to get those guys the ball,” said
Dartmouth head coach Rick White, who
graduated 24 seniors, including quarterback
Trevor Leandro, wide receiver Brock Thibeault
and running backs Isaiah Hsia, Devin Vial
and Denim Cousens. “I think Mitchell is a
good downhill runner. He’s going to get first
downs, but he has the speed in the open field
to outrun some people. Timmy can get to the
edge. He has real good speed to the outside,
but he’s also a pass threat out of the slot. He’s
a very good receiver.”
Loranger and Smith will share this year’s
load with two up-and-coming backs in juniors
Austin Williams and Connor Tavares.
While the potential is great for Dartmouth’s
backfield, Loranger knows that running
backs are only as good as their offensive line.
“The line has to give us the blocks and
holes,” he said.
It may take a little time for Dartmouth’s
linemen to get on the same page since
senior offensive tackle Neil Toole is the only
returning starter. White is hoping their size
will make up for their inexperience.
“We’re actually a little thicker up front
than we have been which is nice,” White said.
“We’ve been fairly lean the past few years,
but they’ve been quick off the ball and been
able to run well. These guys are thicker so
they can grind it out a bit inside.”
Having a talented and deep backfield will
help ease Dalton Soares, a 6-foot, 185-pound
junior, into the role of starting quarterback.
Soares saw plenty of action last year on
defense at linebacker, but was limited on
offense as Leandro’s backup.
“He came to camp in great shape physically
so really it’s just mentally he’s got to get on
pace with everybody else,” said White, adding
that Soares could add another threat to the
ground attack. “He’s kind of a grinder when
he runs, he’s going to get four or five yards.
He’s a tough kid, he’s built like a fullback.
“He’s getting better throwing the ball. He
knows the offense. It’s just a matter of now
dartmouth indians
coach: rick white — conference: old colony league — 2011 record: 8-3
mike valeri/the standard-times
Dartmouth coach Rick White has a bigger
offensive line that in years past.
getting that varsity speed, but he’s right
where we want him to be right now.”
Soares will have a reliable target in junior
wide receiver Nick Simonetti, who finished
last season with 16 catches for 398 yards and
six touchdowns.
White knows Simonetti’s presence on
the field will open up opportunities for his
teammates.
“Nick is someone who can really stretch
the field vertically and that’s what we like to
do,” White said. “He can get behind you in a
hurry.”
Dartmouth will need a versatile offensive
attack with a tough non-league schedule that
includes the likes of Boston College High and
King Philip. The Indians should also be in
for a tight race in the three-team Old Colony
League against Barnstable and Bridgewater-
Raynham.
“Even though it’s just three teams, it’s
going to be difficult to win the conference,”
White said. “We think we’ve prepared the
schedule with playing the BC Highs and the
King Phillips that we’ll play those teams to
get ready for our league. Hopefully, we’ll have
some success this year.”
Even though the Indians
have a first-year quarterback
at the helm and a young
some dangerous weapons in
the backfield with Loranger
threat in Simonetti. With a
small senior class, most of
Dartmouth’s lineup is filled
with juniors. The good news
is a large number of them
How well the offensive
FAIRHAVEN — Now that he’s a
senior, Billy Pires often thinks
about the legacy he wants to
leave behind when he graduates
from Fairhaven High School.
He doesn’t want to just be
remembered for helping the football
program bounce back from a winless
campaign his sophomore year to a 3-7
record last year.
He wants much more than that.
“We’ve come from the bottom,” said
Pires, a three-year, two-way starter.
“We’re looking to not just be the team
that we were bad and we made a good
turnaround. We want to be the team that
came from absolutely nothing — an 0-10
season, a new coaching staff — to the
top, and have the biggest turnaround this
area has ever seen. That’s what we’re
aiming for.”
Some in the football community
believe it’s possible. Early talk around
the South Coast Conference has
Fairhaven in the mix to contend for the
2012 title. With Apponequet, Bourne
and Dighton-Rehoboth taking big hits
from graduation, the Blue Devils appear
to have one of the conference’s more
veteran teams along with Wareham.
“Everybody in our league is
mentioning those two names,” GNB Voc-
Tech head coach Chuck Allaire said of
the Blue Devils and Vikings. “If Fairhaven
can keep it together, they’re going to be
good. I’m glad we’re playing them late.”
The Bears are scheduled to face
Fairhaven in Week 9 and Wareham in
Week 10. Allaire said he wouldn’t be
surprised if those matchups have title
implications.
“You never can tell in this conference,”
Allaire said of a clear-cut favorite. “I
know Apponquet has had its run. Bourne
had its run last year and Dighton-
Rehoboth is always strong. I don’t
see anybody running away with this
conference.
Christian Braga is in the mix to play quarterback for the Blue Devils.
“Fairhaven has been down for a few
years, but they had a few great years not
too long ago. They appear to be back.
They’ve gone to that open offense and
it’s difficult to defend. They make you do
things on defense that you don’t want to
do. That’s a great advantage for a team
like Fairhaven.”
For the first time in three years, the
Blue Devils have experience on their
favorites in tough SCC
from 9
side. Thirteen of Fairhaven’s 53 players on this
year’s roster are seniors and many of them have
been playing on varsity for two years.
“One of our strengths is game experience,”
said Fairhaven head coach Rudy Bulgar, who
enters his third year at the helm. “Many of the
13 seniors have been playing since they were
sophomores. I think the majority of them over
the summer have put in some quality time
in the weight room, getting bigger, getting
faster, getting stronger and getting themselves
recognized.”
Bulgar wasn’t shocked to hear his Blue Devils
being mentioned among conference contenders
after the strides they made a year ago.
“I think the other programs have realized
some of the potential we have over here, from
playing them tough last year, knowing that
we will be senior heavy this year and having
the potential to have a very successful season,”
Bulgar said.
Even though the Blue Devils managed to
win just three games in 2011, they challenged
many of their opponents and were in nearly
every game with four of their seven losses
coming by nine points or less. They lost to
eventual Div. 3A state champion Bourne
38-33 in the second to last game. Also beating
non-conference rival Dartmouth 21-14 on
Thanksgiving was a huge boost for Fairhaven,
which graduated a key contributor in fullback
Tanner Kisla.
“We realized that we are as good as everyone
else in that Bourne game,” recalled Pires. “When
we realized that, we went out and practiced hard
for the next game and showed everyone how
good we were the next week on Thanksgiving.
I still have people come up to me now and say,
‘Hey kid, good game on Thanksgiving. That was
one of the best games I’ve ever seen.’”
Dartmouth head coach Rick White knows
his team will be in for another challenge from
Fairhaven this Thanksgiving.
“I thought they were very talented at their
skill positions,” said White, whose team
finished 8-3 in 2011. “They have a lot of
their guys back. If I was in the South Coast
Conference, I’d be very wary of the Fairhaven
Blue Devils this year. Rudy does a great job
with those guys. He makes it fun for them.
They’re going to run everything but the
kitchen sink at you. You’re going to get a lot to
prepare for. I think Fairhaven is definitely back
in action.”
The Blue Devils have the potential to
put a lot of points on the scoreboard this
fall with scoring threats Kobie Edwards
and Billy Pires returning to the backfield.
The two combined for 16 of Fairhaven’s
26 touchdowns last year. Both have the
potential to break for a big run or make
something out of a short pass play.
It’s still up in the air exactly who will be
getting the ball into the hands of Edwards and
Pires with seniors Jarrid Antil and Christian
Braga in a close battle at the quarterback
position. They shared the role last year and both
saw positive results. Each threw for more than
400 yards along six touchdowns apiece.
“I feel that competition always brings out
the better of the two,” Bulgar said of Antil and
Braga.
“For me it doesn’t really matter,” said senior
mike valeri/the standard-times
Kobie Edwards is in the mix for carries.
offensive lineman Ryan Baldwin. “I’m going
to block for them either way. Both of the
quarterbacks I feel safe with them leading the
team.”
When the Blue Devils look to pass in their
spread offense, they have a solid downfield
threat in senior Connor Flynn, who caught four
touchdown passes a year ago. Also, half of Pires’
10 touchdowns came through the air.
“We’re going to take what the defense gives
us,” Bulgar said. “If they’ve got seven in the box,
chances are we’re going to run the ball and if
they have nine in the box, chances are we’ll try
and throw the ball.
“If you look at the skill players, they’re pretty
good. I would definitely qualify them as some of
the best skill players in the area overall.”
The Blue Devils will no longer be flying under
the radar. They’ve proven to be a team to be
reckoned with.
Getting to this point didn’t seem possible two
years ago when Fairhaven struggled to run a
play without a penalty and made way too many
costly mistakes. The result was a dismal 0-10
season in which the Blue Devils were outscored
301-59.
“It was tough for a lot of us,” Pires said. “It was
probably one of the hardest things I had to do in
my life.”
“Going 0-10 was awful. We felt like we were
at the bottom of the world,” Baldwin said. “It
wasn’t easy. We just tried to go into the next
year just as positive as we could be. We just tried
to outwork every other team and it ended up
working out for us.”
It took the third game of last season for the
Blue Devils to end a 12-game losing streak and
give Bulgar his first varsity win — 20-9 over
GNB Voc-Tech.
“We forgot how to win,” Baldwin said. “It
seemed so different seeing our score higher
than the other team’s. It just felt great.”
Pires along with his fellow classmen are
looking forward to scripting a lasting legacy for
future Fairhaven football players.
“This is what everyone in this town looks
forward to is your senior year of football so
we’re not going to let one of the most important
things in our lives pass us up,” he said. “We’re
going to get it done this year.”
STRENGTHS/WEAKNESSES
The Blue Devils have one of the area’s most veteran
teams just two years removed from a winless campaign.
Of the team’s 13 seniors, the majority of them played last
season and a good number competed as sophomores.
Fairhaven, which runs a hard-to-defend spread option
offense, has talent in its ground attack with Pires and
Edwards and through the air with Antil and Braga connecting
with Flynn, Pires and Edwards. Lack of size is
once again an issue as well as depth. Many of Fairhaven’s
starters go both ways, raising a concern for injuries.
WAREHAM — After going
6-4 last year – which, to
be quite honest, may have
exceeded some expectations
– the Wareham Vikings are
looking to reclaim their usual
perch as one of the South
Coast Conference’s elite
teams.
“We were kind of middleof-the-road
last year, because
we were young,” Vikings coach
Dan Nault said. “We expect
to be a lot better this year,
because we’re going back to
doing what we do.”
Last season, Nault felt he
had a team comprised more
of athletes rather than true
football players, so he had to
break away from Wareham’s
traditional double-wing
offense and mix in a lot of
spread formation to take
advantage of that. It also
helped mask the fact that his
younger players – especially
the linemen – weren’t quite
ready to fully grasp the
intricacies of the double-wing.
“It wasn’t just getting
away from our offense. It
was a complete break with a
philosophy we’d had for 10
years, a completely different
direction,” Nault said. “I just
don’t believe in that type of
‘gym-class football.’ It looks
nice, but so many things
can go wrong, and it wasn’t
productive enough for me to
buy into it.”
Nault said that he’s noticed
a number of teams in the
South Coast Conference
have adopted Wareham’s
philosophy, so it didn’t make
sense that the Vikings weren’t
running Viking football while
everyone else was.
“There are maybe five
double-wing teams running
around our league,” Nault said.
“Almost every team is running
some type of smash-mouth
football, and that’s what suits
Wareham kids better than
anything.”
The new-old offense will be
highlighted by senior wing
back Darien Fernandez, a star
basketball player who also
does some amazing things on
the gridiron. And calling the
shots is senior quarterback
Anthony Abbott, whose high
IQ translates well onto the
wareham vikings
coach: dan nault — conference: South coast conference — 2011 record: 6-4
Wareham back to smash-mouth football
The Wareham Vikings spent the summer preparing for tonight’s season-opener against Falmouth.
football field.
“There’s a lot of attention
paid to Darien, because he’s
such an athlete, but I think
Abbott’s our best player. He
has the intangibles you can’t
measure,” Nault said. “And I
learned with Darien, he just
breaks all the conventional
football rules. You tell him
not to run back to the middle
because the safety is right
there, but he does it anyway,
and he beats the kid and takes
off for the end zone. He puts
pressure on the defense, and
I’m afraid that if he did things
by the book he wouldn’t be as
effective.”
With 16 seniors on the team
– and most of them expected
to contribute heavily – the
Vikings have an experience
advantage as well, even if
some players are going to
be learning new positions.
Senior Brett Labonte and
junior Owen Braley are two
former running backs now
playing on the offensive line,
alongside all-league guard
Angel Rodriguez, a junior.
But the biggest change
(literally) comes at center,
where 6-foot-7 senior Quintin
Silveira is making the switch
from tight end to offensive
lineman.
“It’s made things really
interesting for us, and he’s
really excited about it,” Nault
said. “Last year, all he did was
run around and maybe have
the ball thrown to him five or
six times. Now he’s involved
in every play. He feels like
he’s important to the team
every time he touches the ball.
This is much more of a teamoriented
offense.”
The Vikings’ return to the
wing should get a boost from
fullback Elias Tobia, who
transferred to Wareham from
Old Rochester for his senior
season. Tobia carried the ball
67 times for the Bulldogs last
season for 398 yards, scoring
two touchdowns.
The only problem is that
Nault isn’t exactly sure what
he has in Tobia; the projected
starting fullback has been out
with mono throughout most of
training camp.
“I haven’t seen him practice
more than a couple of days,”
Nault said. “I told him, ‘Go
home. You don’t even have to
sit and watch. Just come back
when you’re healthy.’”
Nault said he’s not exactly
sure why Tobia transferred
to Wareham, but he’s glad to
have him. He comes from a
long line of Wareham athletes;
his father is Ronnie Roach, a
Vikings football legend, and
mike valeri/the standard-times
Nault said he believes Rita
Roach is his aunt. She’s the
school’s No. 2 all-time scorer
in girls basketball and one of
only three Vikings in any sport
to have their number retired
by the school.
“That’s the family, that’s
the bloodline,” Nault said. “I
watched him on film from last
year, and he was impressive.
In our game against ORR
last year, he got the ball
one time, went down the
sideline, changed angles, and
we couldn’t catch him. Our
defense was pretty good, but
he just ran away from them.”
Although Nault said Tobia
“kind of fell into (their) lap,” he
did acknowledge the loss of
Richard and Raekwon Phillips,
who used the school choice
option to transfer to ORR.
“I guess it was like a trade,”
Nault joked.
STRENGTHS/WEAKNESSES
As always, Wareham’s biggest strength
is, well, its strength. The Vikings’ brutal,
physical style is helped by their weightroom
warrior mentality, and returning
full-time to smash-mouth football will
make a huge difference – especially
with former Old Rochester back Elias
Tobia transferring to Wareham. The
Vikings are dealing with three of their
better players (comprising six starting
spots on offense and defense) out with
injury early in the season – OL Owen
Braley (knee), WB Charles Tranfaglia
(high ankle sprain) and Tobia (mono).
But opening against non-league Falmouth
helps out, as Nault hopes everyone
will be healthy when the league
games begin Sept. 14 with Case coming
to Spillane Field.
2012 SCHEDULE
STRENGTHS/WEAKNESSES
Apponequet has always been a team
that can run the ball and the depth
at the running back position should
insure that will continue. Having a very
athletic quarterback returning in Cam
Costa helps the offense, and not having
as many players going both ways
as in the past means more kids will
play. Defensively, the strength of the
team is in its ends. Inexperience at the
wide receiver position is one weakness,
and there are only nine seniors on the
CONTRIBUTING WRITER
LAKEVILLE – As
Apponequet’s football coach
Bob Lomp greets his 17th
squad, he hopes he can look
back on 2011’s 6-5 record as a
“bridge year.”
Coming back with a roster
loaded with sophomores and
juniors and just nine seniors,
Lomp is dealing with a young
team and young assistant
coaches.
“We had a nice 10-year run
of 8-plus wins (each year and
11 wins twice),” Lomp said.
“We have to get the culture
back. We were always in the
mix and we’ve got to get these
young guys to that point.
“This is a tough league
(South Coast Conference) and
we want to be on top. The guys
know the bar is set high at
Apponequet. They just don’t
know how high.”
Lomp pointed out that
it’s a new team with new
players and he is working
with new assistant coaches. In
addition to 11-year defensive
coordinator Peter Suneson,
Lomp is working with new
coaches Brad Leal of East
Bridgewater and Ryan
Rodrigues of New Bedford as
well as former players Darryl
Levesque and Matt Gaouette.
“They have youth and
energy, but they don’t have
the experience,” Lomp said.
“They’re well aware we win,
but they’re catching on now of
how we do things here.”
Apponequet has always
been a running football team
and the Lakers have depth
at running back with Matt
Michael, Derren Levesque,
Westin Cohen, Nate Cassani,
Troy Nanfelt and quarterback
Cam Costa to carry the ball.
There is some size on the
Cam Costa will be back under center for the Lakers this season.
offensive line for those backs
to run behind, including
left tackle Tim Dwyer (250
pounds) and center Matt
Moura (240).
“There’s a new intensity
just coming to the field,”
team captain and tight end/
defensive end Wade Pinto
said. “The chemistry is better
and we have the fire in the
stomach to go the extra mile
to win a game.”
Costa knows what his young
teammates are going through
after being a sophomore who
wound up leading the Lakers
as a starter for the last nine
games last season.
“I was a little nervous, but I
relied on my teammates to help
me out,” Costa said. “I’m more
confident than I was last year.
“Football is a team game. It’s
points and victories. There are
team goals and they are wins.
I’d rather win the game than
throw for a thousand yards.”
Lomp praised Pinto as a
quiet leader who does all
the right things and leads by
example. He called Pinto one
of the best defensive ends in
the SCC and is looking for
him to lead the defense.
Lomp also said that Costa
jon haglof/standard-times special
has worked hard on his
passing since a year ago and
the results are there for the
junior signal caller.
“Cam fits right in the
mold of a championship
quarterback,” Lomp added.
“We run an up-tempo offense
and he learned the offense
and can make all the calls
at the line of scrimmage. He
talks, but he backs it up.”

NEW BEDFORD – The company line at GNB
Regional Voc-Tech begins with Whoriskey and
everyone from head coach Chuck Allaire on
down is saying it.
“The offensive line is definitely our strong
suit and when you talk about it, you start with
Dakota because he’s a stud,” Allaire said in
describing the 6-foot-1, 270-pound junior.
Dakota Whoriskey is among a handful of key
returning players from last year’s team that
produced the school’s first winning record (in
football) in 20 years. A 7-6 victory over Diman
Vocational on Thanksgiving Day sealed a 6-5
regular-season record and the Bears added an
exclamation point by winning the Vocational
Large School title with a 17-14 playoff win
over Greater Lawrence. Whoriskey and center
Jason Lefevre (5-8, 180) are returning starters
from an offensive line Allaire is counting on to
lead the Bears to another successful season.
“We have some good returning players and
some nice pieces up from the jayvees we think
will fit in nicely,” Allaire said. Those “good
returning players” include four key members of
last year’s offense that combined for 66 points.
Running back Cory Ponte established
himself as one of the top backs in the South
Coast Conference last season and chipped in
with six touchdowns. Backup Trevor Mena
(one touchdown) also returns and will join
Ponte in the starting backfield. Both will
line up behind Tyler Sylvia, who started his
first season at quarterback a year ago and
gnb voc-tech bears
mike valeri/the standard-times
GNB Voc-Tech coach Chuck Allaire said the Bears’ offensive line is “definitely our strong suit.”
Bears in line for success
improved as the season progressed. Throw
in Justyn Soares, who was arguably the best
field goal and PAT man in the conference last
season (three field goals and 15 extra points),
and offense should definitely be a strong point,
especially when operating behind that big
offensive line.
“We hope that’s the case,” Allaire said. “We
think we have some nice running backs, an
improving quarterback and an offensive line
we have a lot of faith in. If a few other things
fall into place, it could be an interesting
season.”
There’s plenty of size joining Whoriskey
on the offensive line. Guards Carlton Cruz
and Jacob Grime are 6-4, 225 and 5-10, 225,
respectively, and tight end Joe Walsh – also a
returning starter – is 6-0, 200 while tight end
Derek Lewis checks in at 6-4, 210. Tackle Bryan
Pasquarello (5-10, 190) and Lefevre are the
“small” guys in the forward wall.
Like last season, the Bears don’t figure to
throw the ball very much. “We will when we
feel we can, but we definitely want to run the
ball and control the clock and we’re confident
we have the personnel to do that,” Allaire said.
As good as he is on offense, Whoriskey also
is the stabilizer of a run-prevent defense which
limited opponents to an average of just over
eight points over the final five games of last
season.
“We have some holes to fill and we realize
we’re in a tough conference, but we like what
we’ve seen so far and we’re looking forward to
the season,” Allaire said.
MATTAPOISETT – The numbers four and
seven have turned the last three off-seasons
into nightmares for Henry Quinlan. Now, the
veteran head coach is dreaming about a new
set of numbers he hopes will help change the
fortunes of his Old Rochester football team.
Since taking over the head coaching reins
from the veteran Craig Sherman in 2004,
Quinlan has had just two winning seasons
in his eight years at the helm. Those came in
2005 and 2008 when the Bulldogs finished 7-4.
Although his teams have been competitive in
all of his eight years at the helm, the last three
have been particularly draining on the head
coach.
“When you finish 4-7 three years in a row,
it tends to make the off-seasons awfully long,
especially this past one when so many of
last year’s losses were by just a few points,”
Quinlan said.
Case in point. Five of those seven losses
were by a combined 19 points, including games
decided by one, two and three points, meaning
that, with one big stop or one more touchdown,
last year’s record could just as easily have
been 7-4 or better. Quinlan, however, isn’t
worried about what could or should have been.
He’s more focused on what could be which
explains why he’s focusing on the new set of
numbers ... two and three.
The two centers around the Phillips brothers
who transferred in from neighboring Wareham
High and figure to play a prominent role in the
coach’s other favorite number – three – which
old rochester bulldogs
coach: henry quinlan — conference: south coast conference — 2011 record: 4-7
mike valeri/the standard-times
ORR coach Henry Quinlan has a quick offensive line for the team’s triple-option attack.
Plenty of options for ORR
is short for triple option.
“We went to it on Thanksgiving Day and had
a lot of success in the win over Apponequet
(20-13) and we’ll be going with it this season,”
Quinlan said. Underclassmen dominate this
year’s roster and size isn’t a team strength. But
with good athletes at the skill positions and
what Quinlan sees as a renewed commitment
to the program, this year’s team should be
interesting.
Richie Phillips is a 5-foot-10, 195-pounder
who was penciled in as a running back on
last year’s Wareham roster before he broke
his leg. He’ll be one of the main threats in
the triple option, which is triggered by Nolan
Bergeron, a 6-0, 175 pound junior, who took
over the starting quarterback position late last
season. Raekwon Phillips (6-0, 170) can play
both running back and split end, and running
back Colin Knapton (5-11, 175) will also figure
prominently in the triple-threat attack.
Although Quinlan lost a pair of potentially
key running backs (Elias Tobia to Wareham
and Tyler Zell to soccer), he’s more than
pleased with his depth at the position which
features six underclassmen, including
freshman Darien Dumond.
The lines on both sides of the football are
small with senior captain and starting center
Aaron Holick the biggest (6-2, 250) and
among the most experienced. But quickness,
technique and a willingness to improve has
Quinlan thinking positive.
“This group is absolutely fun to work with
and we (coaching staff) are all excited to see
how things develop over the next couple of
seasons,” he said.
New system, renewed
enthusiasm and a talented
group of underclassmen give
coach Quinlan and ORR fans
something to get excited
about. Nolan Bergeron
gained experience after
taking over at quarterback
late last season and helped
engineer the Bulldogs’ upset
of Apponequet on Thanksgiving
and relative varsity inexperience,
there appears to be
plenty of depth on offense
and, if Quinlan can get this
ROCHESTER – The building process under
Coach Guilbeault is ongoing in the Old Colony
Regional football program.
It’s just being run by a different Guilbeault.
Bryce Guilbeault and his father, Paul, have
switched roles with Bryce taking over as the
head football coach and Paul assuming an
assistant coach’s role.
“I took over, but nothing has changed,” Bryce
said. “When my father became coach two years
ago, a whole new staff came in and it’s still
intact.
“I’ve assumed a lot of the responsibility, but the
kids made the transition easier this year. For the
sophomores and juniors, I was there, installing
the defense. This year, there’s no real difference
between my father and myself. The kids still
have the same coaching staff as last year, the
same scheme of things. That made for an easy
transition.”
The new head coach is in his third year at Old
Colony and previously was a volunteer assistant
coach at Framingham State University. He played
high school, prep school and college football,
and still helps the university with local scouting.
One area that Old Colony has taken a giant
leap forward was starting a freshmen team
where the youngest players can get on the field
in game situations. It’s made a difference of
having 20 sophomore players come back instead
of 10.
Smooth transition for Cougars
But the same problems exist at Old Colony as
there have in the past.
“We don’t have huge numbers,” the new
head coach explained. “A lot of guys have to
go both ways and, hopefully, we stay healthy.
We’re getting bigger and we have a pretty big
sophomore class, but there are a lot of 5-8,
150-pounders.
“We’re doing our best to put them in a situation
to succeed. We’re asking them to do something
completely different, but I’m confident we’re
going in the right direction. We don’t have
numbers, so we have to outwork people and be
in better condition.”
To that end, the team’s lifting program has
blossomed from a few players to 35 this year.
“We’re getting to the point where they
are seeing that lifting and conditioning are
important,” Bryce said. “If they’re in better shape,
that will keep them from injury. Two years ago,
we had 24 guys in street clothes on the sidelines
for the last game of the season. We’re not seeing
a lot of those nagging injuries.”
And the “new” head coach has the benefit of
having the “old” head coach at his side.
“This is his 38th season as a football coach,”
Bryce Guilbeault explained about his dad. “It’s
great for me. If I have any questions, it’s nice to
bounce them off him.
“He doesn’t have an ego. He knows football
inside and out and he’s got a team mentality.
When the kids see that, they see everyone has a
niche and what’s best for the team.”
STRENGTHS
/WEAKNESSES
When a team is lacking in
numbers, those players
who show the best get
to play a lot. Many of the
seniors on the Old Colony
roster were forced to play
since their sophomore
seasons and that experience
should pay off for
the Cougars this year. The
players are playing under
the same offensive and
defensive system, which
makes it easier to add new
things. The older players
have picked up changes
quickly and are helping
their younger teammates.
The biggest weakness is
one the team has faced
every year – depth. Seven
players are slated to go
both ways, so the key is to
stay healthy. Old Colony
can’t afford injuries to
key players that require
two substitutes to fill that
void.
