If you weren’t at the June 76 dance, you
missed a beautiful and enchanting Waltz performed
by our own May Cheng and Calvin
Pauley. They literally ‘floated’ over the dance
floor. You also missed another evening filled
with music by deejay John Bramhall. Many,
many thanks go to May and Cal and John!
We had a marvelous time in June and hope you will spend part
of the 4 th of July weekend at the 76 dance on July 5. Also,
remember to mark your calendars for August 2 when we will
hold our 3 rd annual “Hot Dog Days of August”’ picnic and
dance. Hot dogs, lemonade and chips will be served at intermission
and casual attire [no shorts, please] is welcome.
Lastly, it isn’t too late to join the 76 Club to take advantage of
the savings to members. We prorate the dues so that you
won’t pay for dances that have already occurred in our fiscal
year. Come join us - it’s fun [and smart!]

Swing ‘n’ Sway
We welcome Ken Wiginton to the helm of
the Swing ‘n’ Sway dance club. Our board
has been operating for some months without
a president. Ken volunteered to step up and
take the reins.
Reins are no stranger to the south Texas
native, who grew up on a ranch. Coming
from a western state, Ken’s early dance experience
came in country and western dancing. Since he has
been a part of the local dance community, he has moved toward
West Coast Swing and ballroom. He presently takes lessons
at Dayton Ballroom on Monday evenings and also takes
lessons from instructors Terry Cavanaugh and Jill Christy. Ken
particularly enjoys Swing dancing.
Ken wants to move Swing ‘n’ Sway to have its membership being
even more cordial and welcome those who may be beginners
in ballroom dancing. “All the dance clubs must welcome
new people or we will not survive,” he said. Ken is a proponent
of having established club members invite the newcomers to
dance. He wants to promote more mixing among older club
members and newer guests. “We want them (new guests) to
enjoy themselves and to come back,” he said. “I want them to
have fun. If anyone is NOT having any fun at a Swing ‘n’ Sway
dance, Ken said he wants to be the first one to know about it.
“Come see me if they have a question,” he said. “I want to be
open about what I want to do.”
As we welcome newcomers this summer, the club also welcomes
them to arrive in more casual attire. Shorts for both men
and women will be acceptable as long as good taste prevails.
Culottes will also be acceptable for the ladies as well as casual
slacks, again when worn in good taste.

It was a beautiful night for dancing and Jack
Meinking filled the air with excellent music
that kept everyone on their feet the entire
evening. Father’s Day decorations of assorted
colorful hats in all shapes and sizes
dotted the tables and door prizes of restaurant
gift certificates were awarded to the
lucky winners.
Over 120 dancers attended Dance(tonians’) June 14, dance and were
treated to a Cha Cha lesson by Bob and Rosie McCrady owners of
Bob and Rosie’s Dance Studio here in Dayton. Bob and Rosie took
over from Bernice Dubro Studio and have become a popular couple
who teach private and group lessons in all levels of dance at St.
Mark’s Church Social Hall on Woodman Ave. Thank you Bob and
Rosie for teaching some great steps that we can use in our Cha Cha.
Your love of dancing energized the crowd and everyone thoroughly
enjoyed the lesson!
Dance(tonians) Annual Membership Meeting and Party will be held
Saturday, July 12, at Arbor Hall. Complimentary refreshments of
strawberry cake and chocolate fudge cake will be served after a brief
business meeting and election of board members at intermission. A
dance lesson on Samba featuring professional instructor John
Bucholz will begin at 7:30. Mark you calendar!

Dance Lesson on Samba
Instructed by
John Bucholz
Dance(tonians’) second Saturday dance on July 12 will feature professional
instructor John Bucholz who will teach Samba beginning at
7:30pm. Bring your dancing shoes, practice swaying your hips and
learn some new Samba steps! The lesson is included in the price of
admission to the dance and general dancing with DJs Jack and Bonnie
Yaus will begin at 8:15pm.
John Bucholz has been a professional dance instructor since 1991
and started Ballroom Dancing as a student of Bernice DuBro at the
YWCA of Dayton. John’s first competition was in the Pro/Am division
at Ohio Star Ball with his teacher, Mary Murphy, who is now a
judge and choreographer on the hit television show So You Think
You Can Dance. After Mary moved to California, John continued
dancing as an amateur and began taking lessons with Indianapolis
instructor Brigitte Scott and competing annually at the Ohio Star
Ball.

John was recognized five times as Top Student
at the Ohio Star Ball and continually
made the finals when competing at the
United States Ballroom Championships in
Miami. John’s national achievements at the
USBC included 3 rd . in American Smooth,
2 nd . in American Rhythm and 2 nd . in Open
International Latin. John also took Amateur
honors and placed 2 nd . in American Smooth
at USBC with Diana Maurer after having just
seven weeks to prepare!
John looks forward every year to the Dance
(tonians’) Dance Fair and the 2008 event was
his 22 nd consecutive year of performing!
John still dances with Brigitte and he and
several of his students take coaching from
Bonita Brockert in Cincinnati. John teaches
private lessons in all levels of dance at his
Studio on Smithville Road and group lessons
at the Southern Hills United Methodist
Church Social Hall, 2287 S. Dixie Highway,

We are glad John calls Dayton home and
Dance(tonians) are proud to have him teach
Samba at our Annual Meeting, Party and
Dance on July 12!
Swing ’n’ Sway Board Making Changes
The Board Members of Swing ‘n’ Sway met Tuesday, June 17 and decided to launch
a bold new campaign to increase attendance. The club adopted the motto “fun ‘n’
lively” as the steering element in their campaign.
The decision was made to play more peppy music, to play music the beginner could
dance to as well as the accomplished dancer. More emphasis will be placed on
Swing, Hustle, Cha Cha, and other Latin dances. A new DJ, Terry Cavanaugh, is
being added to the rotation in 2009. The current DJs have been asked to play more
modern music.
Summer dances are now casual dress. Dances will become theme parties. We
have several theme parties planned which are; end of summer Jimmy Buffet party,
Hawaiian Luau, costume ball for Halloween, pizza party, a formal Spring dance. Afternoon
workshops are also being planned. Reminders of the dance and its theme
will be emailed out to those who signup on our email list.
The club is now offering free raffle tickets to regulars who bring in a new guest.
Two for one tickets will be available from board members for people new to Arbor
Hall. Local dance studios and instructors support with incentives will be solicited.
In addition, the club is offering free admission to all active military personnel with
proper ID.
One last thing, board meetings are open to all of our members. We are encouraging
our members to attend. The meetings are not boring. We are excited and have
lots of things being worked on. The next board meeting will be July 22 and we
would love for all members of the club to participate. Active support from club members
will go a long way toward helping us meet our goal. If you are interested in attending,

information about their dances for possible publication. Submissions will be published
only on a space available basis, at the discretion of the editor, and may be
edited. Dances or other events whose dates conflict with the dates of any of the
three clubs’ dances will have a one line listing only. In order to be included in the
newsletter for the following month, please use these guidelines:
SUBMIT YOUR REQUESTS FOR INCLUSION TO THE
EDITOR IN WRITING BY THE 15th OF THE MONTH
E-mail the information to the address below. Either place the information in your
message or provide it as an attachment to the e-mail in Microsoft Word (Other
formats may be acceptable). As an alternative, you can mail the information,
legibly written, to the editor at the address below. Please include your telephone
number and e-mail address, if applicable, for clarification or verification of
information. This will help to prevent publishing errors. Information published is
