The mission of Indian Springs School is to 

develop in students a love of learning, a sense 

of integrity and moral courage, and an ethic 

of participatory citizenship. Inspired by the 

motto Learning Through Living, the school 

is a community of talented boarding and day 

students and dedicated faculty committed

It is with great pleasure that we present Indian 

Springs School’s 2009-2010 Annual Report. As the report’s theme, 

“Thank You,” suggests, it is a publication focused on expressing our 

gratitude for your generosity to the school and the students it serves. 

People from a broad spectrum of constituencies joined together to make 

this one of the most successful fundraising years in the school’s history. 

Along with continued fiscal prudence, reaching and surpassing our 

development goals is positioning us for long-term fiscal health. We could 

not have achieved these goals without you, and we thank you. 

While we are justifiably proud of these efforts, we know that we cannot rest on our 

laurels. We will continue to exercise prudence and solicit your support so that our 

students can learn from the best faculty in the country, participate in life-shaping 

extracurricular activities, and graduate ready to take on college and the world. As the 

stories in this report illustrate, every dollar invested in the lives of our students will 

yield a lifetime of benefits – for them and the world they enter after graduation.

THANK YOU From the DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT 

Throughout the 2009-2010 fiscal year, we asked 

you to invest in the lives of Springs students with your gifts to the school. 

And now, we respond with a heartfelt “thank you.” With your generosity 

and in the midst of a challenging economic climate, you helped us raise 

a record amount — more than $540,000 — for the ISS Annual Fund. 

Thank you - two words used so often in everyday life that they 

sometimes seem to lose their meaning. But how else could we express 

our deepest appreciation for your support? I hope this, our 2009-2010 

Annual Report, will help us take one small step toward showing you how 

and why we are grateful for your generosity.

That figure, however, represents more than dollars and cents. It represents 

a commitment to Shelby Goodwin ’11 and Seth Appiah-Opoku ’11, who 

are highlighted in this report, and their fellow students. It represents 

support for our successful Varsity Soccer and Scholars Bowl Teams, and 

the other extracurricular activities that accompany them. It represents 

acts of individual generosity, such as the record-breaking gift by Stewart Hall ’84 to 

the Annual Fund, and the joint efforts of others such as the Parents Association, the 

faculty, and the Class of 1960. Above all, this figure represents a commitment to the 

ideal, dating back to Doc Armstrong’s days, that the pursuit of excellence, community 

and justice is an endeavor worthy of investment. 

This year our friends – old and new alike – came together and took the 

ISS Annual Fund to a new level. The support we received made the 

impact of the Annual Fund greater than ever. I hope that you will join me 

in celebrating this success. Without friends like you in our community, 

achieving our goal would not have been possible.

The 2009-2010 fiscal year marks progress toward our institutional goal of 

preserving our educational excellence while operating with a balanced budget. 

With record Annual Fund donations and careful spending, we have reduced our 

operating deficit and are progressing steadily toward our goal. 

Even with a balanced budget, it is important to remember that tuition revenues 

do not fully cover the costs of operating the school. Therefore, the Annual Fund 

continues to be essential, picking up where tuition revenues leave off and helping 

cover the full cost of a Springs education. 

As we move forward, please know that we remain committed to being good 

stewards of the resources you invest in us – knowing that our cooperative efforts 

will positively impact the lives of our students.

Annual Fund 

As Springs’ first director, Dr. Louis “Doc” Armstrong was crucial to the development of the school 

– and his focus on community engagement, independence and critical thinking remains vital to the 

school’s DNA. It is little wonder that when the school decided to create a new Annual Fund giving 

level – its highest level, for those who give $10,000 or more in a year – it named it the “Armstrong 

Society.” The creation of the Armstrong Society demonstrates a commitment to the ideal Armstrong 

embraced – that we need each other in our pursuit of “Learning Through Living.”

Boarding 

Seth Appiah-Opoku ’11 has just started his senior year, but he already feels prepared for college, 

thanks to his boarding experience at Springs. A boarder since 9th grade, Seth has acquired skills 

necessary for college life – managing free time, studies and extracurricular activities, to name a few 

– and he has benefitted academically from studying with peers in the dorm and having easy access 

to faculty. With plans to be a pre-med major and pursue a career in psychiatry, Seth is ready for the 

future – and your Annual Fund donations, which help fund boarding life, make those plans possible 

for Seth and others like him.

WINE 101 

The ISS Parents Association has always been 

a supportive part of the school community. 

But its involvement rose to a whole new 

level last fall when it put on Wine 101, a 

fundraiser that invited Springs community 

members and guests to campus to take 

wine-related classes from ISS faculty and 

alumni. Complete with a Town Hall Meeting, 

wine tastings and a silent auction, the nearsell 

out event raised over $30,000 for the 

ISS Annual Fund and will be replicated 

each fall with a new topic. The school is 

very appreciative for the hours of work put 

into this event, which will yield a lifetime of 

benefits for Springs students.

ACADEMICS 

High-quality science programs don’t happen by accident. Just ask ISS Chemistry Teacher Chris 

Tetzlaff. Motivated, bright students and dedicated teachers are keys to a good program, she 

says, but it also takes lab equipment — expensive lab equipment — to get the job done. Last 

year, Annual Fund monies provided for biurets, bunsen burners, chemicals and other materials 

that helped ISS chemistry students expand their lab techniques, key for a student’s success in 

chemistry in high school and college. With the proper equipment on hand, Tetzlaff’s students are 

finding a new appreciation for chemistry and pursuing a deeper knowledge of the subject.

While celebrating their 50th class reunion at Alumni Weekend last spring, the Class of 1960 looked at 

their high school photos and reminisced. They joked as they sat around the familiar Dining Hall tables, 

catching up on the lives of family members and friends. But most of all, they enjoyed each other’s 

company — and shared a deep appreciation of the school they attended 50 years ago. That appreciation

It had been 25 years since Stewart Hall ’84 had been at Indian Springs, and life had taken him far 

from the campus he called home in the early 1980s. But according to Stewart, his heart was never far 

away. Reflective on the importance of his Springs experience, he and his wife, Lisa, decided to give 

back. They gave the largest gift ever given to the Annual Fund in honor of Latin Teacher John Lusco 

and Athletic Director Greg Van Horn, two individuals Stewart credited with influencing his life and 

career. With the Halls’ generosity, more Springs students will have the opportunity for a life-shaping

ARTS 

When Collin Janich ’09 came to Indian Springs, he had many acting credits to his name. But his 

experience at Indian Springs nurtured him as an actor – and a student – and was key in his acceptance 

to the University of Michigan’s theater program, one of the country’s best. He was cast in a college 

production as a freshman, a rare achievement at Michigan, and is taking the acting world by storm in just 

his second year. Collin hopes to perform on Broadway and, eventually, open his own theater company – 

dreams that are entirely possible, in part, because of the educational and artistic influence of Springs.

FROM THE BOYS SOCCER TEAM 

Only two minutes remained in the Varsity Boys Soccer Team’s state quarterfinal game against Altamont 

when Alex Jamroz ’11 scored, breaking a 1-1 tie and advancing Springs to the Alabama State High 

School Athletic Association 1A-4A Final Four. As the crowd rushed Ray Woodard Field following 

the game, it was apparent that this would be a moment to remember. Your gifts to the Annual Fund 

helped provide the balls, field upkeep and transportation for the team, but it also did much more — 

it provided once-in-a-lifetime memories for the student-athletes and the entire Springs community.

Scholarships 

Despite good grades and test scores in the 7th Grade, Shelby Goodwin ’11 felt that there was 

something missing in her education. So her family examined the possibility of coming to Springs 

– and with an offer to attend on the Malone Scholarship, she jumped at the opportunity. Now 

in her fifth year at Springs, Shelby has had a rich experience – from challenging academics to 

participation in campus activities to being part of an accepting and supportive community. As she 

nears graduation, she knows she has had the opportunity of a lifetime — and is grateful to the 

generous donors who made her experience possible.

John C. Malone Scholarship 

These scholarships are awarded to students who are in the top 5 percent of their class as identified 

by the previous year’s school records or associated test scores. These students qualify for 30 to 

100 percent need and show evidence of enthusiasm and motivation toward maximizing his or her 

educational opportunities.

ANDY ABROMS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP 

Provided annually to students currently enrolled at Indian Springs School, these scholarships support 

summer academic enrichment opportunities.

This scholarship awards partial financial aid for two academically gifted high school students.

Iain Alexander Scholarship 

This scholarship is awarded annually to a rising senior who shows good citizenship and demonstrates 

an appreciation of the values of Indian Springs School.

This scholarship is given to a current student who demonstrates good citizenship and financial need. 

General Henry LEE Badham Minority Scholarships 

Awarded partially or in full for boarding or day tuitions, this scholarship is given to minority students 

entering Indian Springs in the 8th, 9th or 10th grades. 

Bruce McFarland Endowed Scholarship Fund * 

This fund has been established in honor of Bruce McFarland ’60 by his wife, Deborah McFarland, 

to benefit a student or students showing academic promise and financial need. 

Bernard A. Monaghan Scholarships 

These scholarships are awarded annually for up to two full-boarding tuitions to students from rural 

Alabama or neighboring states. Several additional awards equal to all or part of the difference 

between day and boarding tuition are awarded annually to students from the Birmingham area who 

would like to board at the school and are currently enrolled at Indian Springs. 

Carter T. Saxon Endowed Scholarship 

The scholarship is awarded annually for partial tuition to a student who is currently enrolled at 

Indian Springs. 

Torchmark Scholarship 

These scholarships are awarded to incoming or current students who have demonstrated that 

they possess the requisite skills, aptitude, abilities and desire to succeed in the course of study 

they are pursuing at Indian Springs and who require financial assistance in order to attend or 

continue attending the school. This fund was established to support minority students in an effort to 

make the student body more heterogeneous and create greater educational diversity and learning 

experiences for all students.

Marvin Balch Mathematics Fund 

This fund provides calculators and other tools for learning mathematics to students who might not 

otherwise be able to afford them. 

Anneliese W. and Bert H. Wiesel Memorial Scholarship 

Awarded annually for partial tuition, the scholarship is given to a student who has an interest in 

basketball or tennis and is currently enrolled at Indian Springs. 

Keehn Berry Endowed Scholarship 

Established by Dr. and Mrs. Berry, this scholarship was made in honor of Keehn Berry, an original 

member of the Indian Springs School Board of Governors (1931-1965). The basis of making the 

annual award includes the academic record of the student and his or her contribution to student 

activities and the Indian Springs community. 

Anna and Seymour Gitenstein Prize 

The prize is given each year to an Alabama student currently enrolled at Indian Springs.

TO THE ACWORTH FOUNDATION 

Brooks Hines Memorial Scholarship 

Awarded annually, this scholarship is given to a student leader who is active in student government 

or other student activities. 

SCHOLARSHIPS 

A student evacuated to the U.S. from Britain during World War II, Brian Acworth attended an 

excellent independent school during the war because of the generosity of others. As his education 

and career continued to flourish, he never forgot the role of the people who helped him get 

his start. So he started the Acworth Foundation, which provides financial assistance to gifted 

students so they can have access to a superior secondary education. During 2009-2010, the 

foundation sought out and selected Indian Springs as one of a handful of schools to receive 

funding, and now two bright ISS students are getting the same start as Acworth. 

Lara Hoggard Music Scholarship * 

This scholarship, given to an outstanding singer or musician at ISS on a yearly basis, honors the 

dedication of former ISS Glee Club Director Dr. Lara Hoggard to the school and its students. 

H. Drennen Jones Memorial Award 

This annual award for partial tuition is usually given to a student in the 9th or 10th grade.

LEGACY SOCIETY 

Established in 1999, the Legacy Society honors individuals who share a 

commitment to the future of Indian Springs School by including Springs in their 

estate plans and encouraging others to include ISS in their own plans. 

Including the school in their wills, establishing a charitable trust while maintaining 

life income, and naming the school as a life insurance beneficiary are some of 

the ways these individuals have helped secure the long-term strength of Indian 

Springs School. This is a partial listing, and we urge those who have taken this
