Barry Taugher
SBART President
t is my distinct pleasure to welcome you to
y-Ninth Annual Santa Barbara Athletic Round
Table Hall of Fame Banquet. We are here to celebrate
athletics, academics, and ethics through a unique Santa
Barbara institution.
This banquet and the attendant inductions into the
Hall of Fame is the jewel in the crown of Santa Barbara
that is the Athletic Round Table. It culminates nine months
of activities, both large and small, that the Round Table
sponsors and promotes.
The chief of these activities is the weekly press
luncheons, held every Monday during the school year.
The luncheons have become a venue for building the Santa
Barbara athletic community. At the luncheons coaches
meet and recognize not only their own athletes but athletes in other schools, with whom they
have competed last week or will do so next week. They acknowledge character, hard work,
and achievement, recognizing each student athlete individually. We award athletes weekly,
and we award scholar athletes monthly. We celebrate achievements in ethics through the Phil
Womble Ethics award monthly.
Throughout the year we host events for our members who make this possible. Those
events include the Fall Classic (John Robinson) and the Prelude to March Madness
(Don Ford, Jerry Pimm, and Mark Patton). In February we produce a luncheon celebrating
the local National Girls and Women in Sports Day, where achievements in women's athletics
are present by outstanding women role models. And tonight we will induct six athletes to the
Hall of Fame. We will present seven special awards; six scholarship awards; coaches of the
year; the athletes of the week; scholar athletes of the year, and the Womble Ethics awards for
the year.
We often hear from coaches and community members that this organization is unique
for a town the size of Santa Barbara. The Round Table is indeed unique. We accomplish all
of this with no paid staff and no place of business. We have an incredible board and committed
members. Our Hall of Fame committee, led by Darcie McKnight, has years of experience
with this amazing production. The Round Table is unique because it is derivative of the
uniqueness of the Santa Barbara community, of which we are all a part.
In closing, it is fitting to acknowledge and thank our sponsors. Local athletes benefit
from the support of the Santa Barbara News Press, through coverage of the press luncheons
and sponsorship of the Athletes of the Week. Thank you, to the sports writers, editors, and
publisher of the News Press.
The following have contributed directly to this event: Title Sponsor - Montecito Bank
& Trust; Table Sponsors - First American Title, Giffm & Crane-General Contractors, Coldwell
TOM DOOLITTLE
Every nonprofit exists in part due to the commitment of their volunteers. This is
particularly true for the Santa Barbara Ski and Sports Club. Torn Doolittle's involvement
BRUCE GIFFIN
The long magical journey that began as a youngster in Nashville that led to today and
Bruce Giffin's humble acceptance of the prestigious R.F. MacFarland award has had many
twists and turns. Over the years, Bruce has contributed back to his community on both
local and national levels serving in a variety of leadership roles. He currently serves on
the boards of the Santa Barbara Regional Chamber of Commerce, the Santa Barbara Polo
& Racquet Club and his favorite non-profit, the Elings Park Foundation.
Twenty-five years ago, when the Elings Park Foundation was formed, the founders
dreamed of transforming a city dump into a community treasure where friends and families
could gather. As President of the Board of the Elings Park Foundation from 1999-2005,
Bruce's work championed the notion that the park must become a center for youth sports
and recreation activities. Today, the events and activities available to enjoy at Elings Park
are amazing. Bicycle moto-cross, mountain biking, baseball, softball, soccer, rugby,
lacrosse, RC cars, summer camps, movies, overnight camping, tournaments, birthday
parties, graduations, celebrations and much, much more have all become
everyday events. Over the years, many civic leaders have contributed to
the "Elings Park dream." Our community is indeed grateful to them and
to Bruce for their vision, tenacity and leadership.
Bruce resides in Santa Barbara along with his wife Kelly, his boys
Riley and Teagan, two dogs, seven birds, two lizards and a commune of
hamsters. Bruce has occasionally been accused of attempting to practice
architecture, but those that know and love him, deny it. Looking back
over the years, Bruce is convinced that the long, lonely, claustrophobic
flight from Nashville to Santa Barbara was the inspiration for him to
always work "out of the box." With so little funds and rent so high, the
box became Bruce's first home in Santa Barbara. Ironically, that very
same box is the most recent dramatic Giffin & Crane Montecito remodel
and is now conservatively appraised at a $5.2 million.
./ he Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Scholar Athlete of the Year Award
~ -..- was initiated in September 1986 after the Round Table's Board of Directors
recognized the need to honor those students who are not only successful athletes, but who
also maintain strong academic and extracurricular credentials.
Qualifications for nomination include participation in varsity athletics at the high
school level and in designated athletic programs at the college level. Academic qualifications
include outstanding grade point averages, usually greater than 3.5, in conjunction
with other scholarly activities such as honor societies, scientific societies, extracurricular
activities and outstanding aptitude test scores for high school. Students have been selected
by principals, senior counselors, athletic directors and coaches at the various high schools
and colleges in the Santa Barbara area, in association with the Athletic Round Table.
The Athletic Round Table feels that the significance of this award goes beyond recognizing
individual students who have outstanding academic and athletic records. It also
is a reminder to the community that it is possible for a student to participate in athletics
and still maintain outstanding academic achievement. We are proud to present the 2005-2006
