SPECIALIST TECHNOLOGY COLLEGE
Jess Hough and Ashley Kaye
After a long, hard year of studying and examinations, Year 11
were finally able to let their hair down in style at the long
anticipated Graduation Ball in July.
The glittering event was held at the Holiday Inn Hotel in Tong
Village, where the students, who had been waved off like film
stars by proud parents and residents outside school, were
cheered into the Ballroom by accompanying members of
staff.
As the photographs show, our students did us proud: there
were some spectacularly beautiful gowns and some very
stylish young men.
After a formal meal, the serious dancing began, resulting in
little piles of high-heeled sandals rapidly forming around the
edges of the dance floor. During a break, Josh Proctor and
Sarah Moorhouse were crowned WLHS Prom King and Queen
2007 whilst Jess Hough and Ashley Kaye were voted our
funkiest dancers.
Students danced on until the early hours and, as they left, we
were delighted to hear the Hotel Manager complimenting them
“You are the best Prom group we have ever had!”
Congratulations and good luck Year 11, Class of 2007. (See
page 2 for Examination details).
Year 11 on Stage at the West Yorkshire Playhouse
West Leeds High School
Congratulations Year 11!
Well done to our GCSE students,
who once again topped the
“previous best” of 2006 to make
this year's results the best ever.
As usual there were many
outstanding individual
achievements, but really too many
to mention here. Many exceeded
their own expectations with the
results they gained, even if they did
not achieve 5+ A-C.
The average points score, which
measures achievement, improved
yet again. This is a tribute to the
hard work of the students and staff.
West Leeds Centenary
As West Leeds celebrates its
Centenary this year, the school is
planning a special event in
commemoration.
We have undergone many changes
since the school was founded in
1907 as a mixed fee-paying school
in the building on Whingate. At the
time the boys and girls were not
allowed to meet and occupied
different ends of the building. Then
in the 1950s it became two
separate schools, which began as
grammar schools and were later to
become comprehensives.
The wheel turned full circle in 1992
when the re-organisation of Leeds
schools re-established West Leeds
High School as a mixed
comprehensive on the West Leeds
Girls' site.
We have since gone from strength
to strength, becoming a Specialist
Technology College in 2005, and
continuing our tradition of success
in the heart of the city.
Happy 100th birthday,
In March the Year 11 GCSE Textile group
went on stage at the West Yorkshire
Playhouse to present their final display for
their GCSE Coursework with Miss Church.
Their projects involved designing and
making either theatre costumes or
children's clothes and as the picture
shows, the quality and variety were
astonishing.
Supported by eager parents and friends,
Lovell Mentoring Programme
Four Year 11 students, Adam Clark,
Thomas Deery, Charlotte Devine and Ian
Sharp have all taken part in the Lovell
Mentoring Programme run in selected
schools across the country.
The aim of the programme is to give
students an insight into a career in the
construction industry.
Wortley and Morley High Schools were
also involved in this programme and the
three worked together at the end of the
project to produce a joint display of their
work at the Lovell Mentoring Conference
held in July at Nottingham University.
“It was interesting and useful,”said Adam.
“It made us work as a team, made us
more organised and gave us a good idea
of what it would be like to work in
industry.”
the students arrived at the Playhouse in
time to have make-up applied by YMCA
training, before taking to the stage for
their fashion shoot. They all had a brilliant
time!
(I know from my Year 11 form that
everyone really enjoyed this experience: I
was enthusiastically shown some
creations from the first stitch to the final
result! Ed.)
ASDAN: the Prince's Trust XL
Programme
James excels!
For the last four years, the Learning
Mentors have planned and delivered the
ASDAN Prince's Trust XL programme and
students have gained certification from
Bronze to Silver level.
Feedback from the Moderators has
always been positive and this year the
folders were again classified as
“Outstanding.”Indeed one student, James
Keith (pictured below), was moderated as
Excellent and he has been recommended
to aim for Gold in Year 11.
Well done, James!
Year 7 are “Booked Up”
During September, every member of Year 7
was invited to choose a free book, from a
selected list of twelve, which will be with
them by Christmas.
As part of the “Booked Up” scheme, pupils
spent the month being able to read about
each book and author and joining in with
games and activities. They also received
Over 100 Pupils Shine in the Summer Concert.
In the summer term, West Leeds again
took part in the Festival, but this year we
were lucky to have a two week dance
project instead of a visiting overseas
group working in school.
In the first week, Asian dancers from SAA-
UK worked with year 7 students and
covered a range of dance styles including
Bengali Folk, Classical, Gujerati and
Bollywood. In the second week, Denapoli
Clark from RJC Dance Company worked
with year 8 on Contemporary Dance. The
picture shows Sarah Ellis in performance.
The “Summer Spectacular” was held on the evening of Tuesday, June 26 and gave the
capacity audience a wide variety of entertainment from the Band, the Choir, Steel Pans
and many different combinations of groups and soloists.
Opening and closing the evening were the Choir and Band, who finished with a rousing
performance of “School's Out for Summer”. We had wonderful selections from “Les
Miserables” from the Harmony Choir and some impressive Steel Pans from the Year 7
Beginners' Group, who played “Land of the Silver Birch”. They were followed by Year 8,
whose experience came through in “Skaters' Waltz” and “Jamaica Farewell”.
As usual there was lots of outstanding singing, but with over 100 pupils participating,
there are sadly too many to mention by name. This truly was a spectacular event and a
great success. We all had a fantastic evening. Well done everyone!
The programme, officially launched by the
new Children's Laureate on 11 June this
year, aims to encourage and support the
enjoyment of reading in the Year 7 age
group.
The Bookworms!
West Leeds
at the Carnegie
Celebration Event
On the morning of June 20th, Miss
Owen and her band of 10 KS3
“bookworms” were invited to
Leeds Town Hall to be present at
the judging of the Carnegie Book
Awards, 2007.
Earlier in the spring term, Miss
Owen took the pupils: Rachel
Robertson, Rebekah Deery, Sarah
Panther, Danielle Legg, Shauna
Rogers, Laura Naylor, Lynda
Inkpin, Charlotte Jenner, Laura
Carter and Liam Kaye to Armley
Library to hear one of the novelists
discussing her work and this
resulted in the group being invited
on to the student reading panel for
the Awards.
For six weeks, they read and
discussed the novels before going
to the ceremony in a Victorian
courtroom at the Town Hall, where
they took part in the voting. Laura
Naylor told us, “the theme of the
event was a day in court and each
book was closely “examined”. The
winner was My Sword Hand is
Singing and the runner up was The
Road of the Dead. I enjoyed both
books.”
Rachel Robertson voiced the
verdict of the group when she told
us “I think it was a brilliant day!”
Rats and Slavery on the Humanities Corridor!
FMS Annual Conference: May 2007
“Making Every Child's Music Matter”
West Leeds High School
“The Tempest” at the
West Yorkshire Playhouse
“Magical and Amazing”
In our last edition, we described the
hard work put in by staff and
students to prepare for our entry for
the National Shakespeare Schools'
Festival to be held at the West
Yorkshire Playhouse in February.
Many of us were lucky enough to see
the dress rehearsal in the Drama
Studio at school, but following this,
the cast spent a day at the theatre
working with professionals in
readiness for the performance in the
Quarry Theatre in front of a large
audience. This included the National
Director of the SSF who had travelled
from London to see it. In his public
appraisal of the performance, he
used words such as “magical”,
”colourful”, “amazing” and
“innovative” and also singled out
Sam Hall as Prospero for having a
“commanding presence on the
stage”.
It was a memorable experience for
all who took part. Well done to all our
stars!
The Full Cast
Zinzile Gama, Carl Johnson and Sam Hall
Danielle Illingworth, Chelsea Barraclough and Kieran Bancroft
There were two days of slavery on the Humanities' corridor in July, when an event was
organised to commemorate the ending of the Slave Trade in 1807. The corridor was
transformed on July 5th, so that Year 6 visiting for their Taster Day came face to face
with the hold of a slave ship, complete with cargo, rats and, of course, slaves (captured
from Year 7 and chained up!).
Staff and pupils worked hard to decorate the areas, which were very effective- slaves
and slave masters especially! Both our Year 6 visitors and our own KS3 pupils enjoyed
it: “I felt awful because we had to beg for food and everyone kept making fun of us. It
was horrible getting chained to the wall and rats crawling over us,” Danielle said.
Armley Community Project
For the last four weeks of the summer term, ten students from years 7, 8 and 9 worked
very hard to produce life- sized paintings of famous people from the western side of
Leeds and Armley, in a project funded by Leeds Youth Service.
Ryan Bailey, (Leeds Rhinos and Great Britain), who studied at West Leeds and Scary
Spice, were two of the famous names who were chosen as subjects. Mr Kelly would like
to congratulate all those who attended the Art Club sessions and did so well completing
the paintings, which were later displayed around Armley Town Street.
A great Science Trip!
By Chloe Headlong (now Year 8)
In June, Mr Wraith took us in the minibus
to Baildon Moor on a Science trip.
When we got there we climbed up a giant
hill until we got to a muddy, wet patch of
grass where there used to be a fossil bed.
There were bits of slate which were
layered and we had to remove each layer
carefully until we found a fossil. After we
had found some, we went back to the
minibus and Mr Wraith drove us to
Tropical World where we had our lunch.
We saw lots of wonderful creatures inside
like ring-tailed lemurs and meercats
which looked as if they were dead but
really were just sleeping. In the dark
room, we saw bush babies and then
reptiles like snakes and lizards. Before we
left, we went into the tropical room filled
with exotic, colourful plants and birds
such as the scarlet macaws and some
white headed ducks with long beaks.
It was a great trip. Thank you!
“It's so beautiful, it's awesome”
In the summer term, the Year 8 students
visited St. Bartholomew's church in
Armley to look at the architecture and
features of a traditional parish church. All
were given time for a period of reflection
whilst in St. Bart's and many students
took the opportunity to light a candle in
memory of their loved ones. Looking at
the comments written in the visitors'
book, one of which is in the title, this was a
very valuable visit both spiritually and
educationally for our students.
Mrs Doherty
As a result of our ongoing Music Project, with their music making.
pupils from WLHS and St. Bart's Primary Congratulations are due to all who took
were invited to participate in the part, especially Paul Bone and Andrew
their leadership and conducting skills. It
Since Christmas, some Year 10 GCSE was a fantastic day and a great
West Leeds Joins the Army!
On Tuesday, 19th June, Year 9 and 10
students from WLHS attended the Army
Exhibition Day at Catterick Camp in
North Yorkshire.
The event was open to schools from all
over the north- east of England and is held
every year: this is the third year that we
have been invited to participate.
The day included a mixture of static and
live displays, but the main one featured
the motor cycle display team of the Royal
Corps of Signals, which was breathtaking
and very dangerous. Everyone enjoyed it!
Tanks, high-tech communication
equipment, and a variety of weapons were
available for a hands-on experience for
the students.
The army really excelled in making this a
memorable day for both students and
staff.
Art and Artists: KS4
Positive about the BTEC!
An innovation in the Art
Department this year is the BTEC
First Certificate, which has been
introduced into Year 10 and
received a very positive comment
from the Moderator who visited in
July.
As a part of the Course, the artist,
Leo, worked with our BTEC Art and
Design group for the “Situation
Leeds Contemporary Arts Festival”
in May to create a temporary public
sculpture for the school. This most
successful day finished by
photographs being taken of the
sculptures placed in different sites
around the school.
Workshop with Heidi Shavier
In another workshop, students
from Year 10 Art were treated to a
session with artist Heidi Shavier
from Leeds Art Gallery, who led
them in creating abstract
sculptures from a variety of media.
The aim was to be able to symbolise
emotion and students made fabric
hearts to express love or twisted
sculptures to signify anger or
confusion. “They were really
creative: I enjoyed working with
them,” was the artist's comment as
she left us.
Year 11 Art Exhibition
On June 8th this year, the Year 11
GCSE work went on display for its
final exhibition. The private viewing
was attended by students, their
families and members of staff and
there were enthusiastic comments
on all sides.
Next year we are planning to have it
running for a week so that everyone
has an opportunity to view the art
work.
James gives Oxford a Try!
Early in July, James Adams in Year 12 was
invited to spend a week at Keble College,
Oxford at the prestigious Sutton Trust
Summer School.
The School was set up by John Stein, the
professor most concerned with medical
admissions at Magdalen College, who has
worked hard for 20 years to widen access
to Oxford University. As part of the
scheme, able students are invited to go to
Oxford for a week and see what it is like.
“I stayed there from Sunday to Friday,”
James told Points West.“My tutorials were
to give me a “Taster” of what it would be
like to study physics at Oxford. Our
student mentors were first year
undergraduates and very helpful. It was a
really good experience because besides
the tutorials, we got to take part in various
activities such as fencing, volleyball and a
trip to the open air theatre to watch
“Hamlet”. He added that he had also had
a chance to visit Christ's College where
Harry Potter was filmed and that on the
final night there had been a formal dinner
followed by a disco.
“I really enjoyed the week,” he said. “It
showed me what I could do and how much
variety you can have in your life as a
student. It really made me think about my
future!”
recognise the thinking skills people need
to motivate themselves and take control
Healthy Eating with Greenhill
Primary School
On Monday, 18th June, Mrs Parkin visited
Greenhill Primary School to issue a
challenge to their Year 6 pupils: they were
to work in small groups to research
products to help them design and make a
new, healthy salad.
They all visited Leeds Market to purchase
their fresh ingredients, and on 21st June,
the staff and pupils walked over to West
Leeds with their shopping. The
enthusiasm for getting “stuck in” was
overwhelming (see photos).
Pupils produced a wide range of exciting
and tantalising dishes including stuffed
peppers, vegetable and lemon couscous,
rice salads, fruit pasta salads, fajitas and
vegetable quiche. Everyone enjoyed
creating the salads, but tasting them was
even more popular! Well done, Year 6!
Year 6 enjoying preparing for West Leeds!
Year 6 Taster Day in Food Technology
“What a hectic but enjoyable day!” Mrs Parkin told us. “Our visiting Year 6 pupils had the
job of making and decorating a batch of biscuits within 40 minutes!”
She added her thanks to “my wonderful Year 10 students” (Jatinder Bahra, Charlotte
Reynolds, Ella Palmer, Sarah Inkpin, Stacey Malone and Gemma Taylor) who, she said,
It was agreed that Councillors would
remain in office for their school life
to ensure continuity, unless they
wished to stand down or were
removed.
The Council has been responsible
for the increased number of litter
bins around school and has also
placed suggestion boxes around the
buildings so that staff and students
can raise issues they would like
aired.
Our members sit on the School
Governing Body Welfare and
Curriculum sub- Committee and will
also be responsible for being part of
the interview process for the
Principal of the new school.
As a member of the “Schools'
Councils UK”, we attend local and
regional events and work with
students from other schools. We are
already working more closely with
Wortley Student Council and this will
continue as the new school
becomes more of a reality.
The important thing to remember is
that the Council is the voice of the
students and is a way that we can
make a difference to the place in
which we work - so if you have a
concern, let us know.
