Ladislaus J. Bolchazy, PhD, our beloved Lou, departed this life in the
early hours of July 28, 2012. We, his colleagues at Bolchazy-Carducci
Publishers, mourn the loss not only of our founder and president, of
our boss but also of our friend, mentor, colleague, and teacher.
While Lou was a strong presence at a myriad of committee meetings
held in our library/conference room, remembrances of Lou
presiding over a celebratory luncheon or an employee birthday fest
in that same room remind us that he was much more than our boss.
And, of course, for Allan and Marie, he was father and husband, as
well as colleague.
The Bolchazy family and the Bolchazy-Carducci Publishers family
have been touched by the many emails, cards, and notes that
have paid tribute to our cherished Lou Bolchazy. We have included
some tributes throughout the pages of this catalog. More can be
read though the link on our home page, www.BOLCHAZY.com.
Please be assured that we are all committed to Lou’s vision and
zeal for B-C, its books, and its mission to serve the classics community.
In so doing, we build upon Lou’s legacy. Requiescat in pace.
Eulogy
Early last Saturday morning, there was a discernible “tremor in the Force” when Lou
Bolchazy passed away. Lou himself would be scratching his head at this reference to the
Star Wars movies, because popular culture was never his strong suit. But a “tremor in the
Force” is to me the best description of the sense that in Lou’s passing, something titanic
slipped off into grace.
As Bob Meagher, one of Lou’s authors, lovingly described him when I wrote to tell
Bob the sad news, “Lou was such a large presence, a force of nature, as difficult not to
notice as the weather.”
Lou loved to engage, interact, question assumptions, play the devil’s advocate. And
meanwhile, there’s a fresh pot of coffee on. Sit down. Let’s talk. It’s no coincidence that
Lou’s PhD dissertation was on hospitality in antiquity. Lou was irrepressibly social. He
nearly always wanted to talk, and he would talk with anyone about anything, though
he had his favorite topics that we all knew SO very well. He was a fierce defender of the
liberal arts. Cicero’s Archias the poet had nothing on Lou Bolchazy. And though he created
an amazingly successful publishing company out of whole cloth, at heart Lou was
an idealist. When in acquisitions meetings we’d try to confront him with financial realities
like marketability, saying that no one would buy the book he was championing, he
would insist that people “should” want to buy such a book, that “the world needs this.”
Lou was curious about so many things, always asking questions. It was like having
around a toddler with a really high IQ. He had his nose into everything, fingers on all the
buttons. His was a restless energy. He liked to rummage through every pile to find the
hidden gems, and was a visionary with a strong streak of sentimentality; he could never
quite let go of anything. He was able to see the real value in every idea, every rejected
2 • Bolchazy-Carducci Publishers, Inc.
project. He wanted it ALL. He never gave up on anything, or
on anybody, for that matter. And we all were beneficiaries of
that magnanimity.
Lou was an eccentric’s eccentric, and he gathered eccentrics
around him. He found the diamond in everybody’s rough, and
he put up with a lot of rough; in fact he seemed to find rough
edges endearing. My Scottie Emma used to come to the office
with me from time to time, and although she was a surly, exacting
little dog, she wasn’t above begging staff members for the
treats I kept on the file cabinet that marked the border of where
I’d gated her in with me. Lou loved to give her cookies, and he
accepted her growling as part of her innate charm. “I think she
might bite me,” he’d muse; to which I’d reply, not even looking
up from my computer screen, “I think you’re right: I’d stay back
if I were you.” Never daunted—by either Emma’s or my own
lack of receptivity, Lou wrote me a lovely note of condolence
upon Emma’s passing, which I have kept to this day, in which
he called Emma “our beloved mendicant” and “our dear little
Cerberus.”
Over the years, I came to expect and accept some of Lou’s
most confounding traits. And I can’t say that he didn’t give me
fair warning. Above all, he was the master of switching horses
in midstream. Most of us at B-C liked the predictable comfort
of marching a straight line to a set deadline, but Lou loved to
saunter in at midpoint—or more often, tantalizingly just before
press time—and upset the apple cart (to mix in another metaphor),
just so he could engage us in picking up the apples one
by one and considering each of them in turn. He was like one of
those trickster gods of the myth he loved so much, who had an
outfit of two different colors, split vertically down the midline,
who would walk in one direction, displaying one color outfit to
half of the village, and soon after, walk back in the other direction,
displaying the other color to the other half of the village,
and leave them to bicker out what they had seen. He loved to
kid and tease. He’d deliver a joke deadpan, and wait to see if
you “got” it. But he was so good at it that he eventually learned
to signal with an obvious eye twinkle that he wasn’t serious,
like Mozart taking advice from Salieri that he needed to end
pieces with an obvious “bang” so dullards would know when
to applaud. I think now, in retrospect, that Lou was always,
like Sterne’s Tristram Shandy, defying the inexorable march of
time. When I first came to work for him, he warned, “If you are
fond of closure, this is not the place for you.”
And although this may make you think we never accomplished
anything at Bolchazy-Carducci, we were on the contrary
highly productive, and became the go-to publisher for
high school and college classics teachers across the country.
Some of this was due to Lou’s persistence. For someone who
had a mind-boggling range of interests, he could also be frighteningly
single-minded. One of the things that Lou and I had in
common was a love of the first-century BCE Epicurean poet
and philosopher, Lucretius. There’s a phrase from Lucretius
that fits Lou well: stilicidi casus lapidem cavat: “the fall of dripping
water hollows out stone” (De rerum natura 1.313). If Lou
believed in something, he found a way to get it done. Be first to
do it. Do it best. These were things he made us strive for, without
ever really saying those words out loud. And as a result, Lou
was not one for false modesty: What he loved, he wanted everyone
to appreciate and love. He had pride in his company, in Marie
and Allan and his whole family, and in his native Slovakia,
the heart of Europe.
And so it was a shock to us all when Lou left us so swiftly, and
we were not only stricken by the loss, but struck by the courage
and grace and calm he showed in his leaving. As I was thinking
about what to say here today, I paged through the Lucretius
both Lou and I loved. I know you will recognize Lou here in
these lines.
Quo magis in dubiis hominem spectare periclis
convenit adversisque in rebus noscere qui sit.
nam verae voces tum demum pectore ab imo
eliciuntur et eripitur persona: manet res.
– Lucretius De rerum natura 3.55–58
The image of Lou that will endure for me is one of passionate
engagement with life. In many ways, Lou reminded me of the
fi ft h-century bce philosopher Socrates, who hung around the
Athenian marketplace, chatting with anyone who happened by.
Socrates mentioned in his final defense speech, after he learned
he was condemned to die, his thoughts about what lay ahead for
him in the afterlife: that this would give him the chance at last
to talk face-to-face with and question all those wise men who
had passed before him, like the poets Homer and Hesiod.
And that’s where I imagine Lou is now: sitting in the affable
company of his beloved ancient authors, in spirited conversation,
signaling for his colleagues not to interrupt their discussion
as he rises to put on a fresh pot of coffee.
From the cruel mockery of the Festival of Laughter to the sweet tale
of Cupid and Psyche, from adventures that question human-animal
boundaries to the profoundly spiritual conclusion, Apuleius constantly
mingles the serious and comic, the bizarre and surreal with
the quotidian details of ancient life. The selections in this Reader are
designed both to represent the variety characteristic of the Metamorphoses
and to create a coherent narrative of the life and trials of Lucius
(and Psyche). Attention is also given to the cultural milieu of its author
(second century ce Roman North Africa).
Features • Introduction to Apuleius’ life and works, and to the Metamorphoses’
A mature but accessible Latin, a narrative brimming with historical
significance and fascination: these were once touted as obvious advantages
of reading Caesar’s Bellum Gallicum. A change in sensibilities,
however, read Rome’s brutal invasion and conquest of northern Europe
as problematic, if not disturbing. But questions about the validity
of Rome’s actions—and of Caesar’s, especially in his later Bellum Civile—are
precisely what make these commentaries compelling to read
and to discuss. Additional selections from Caesar’s letters, speeches,
and poetry offer fresh perspectives on his stylistic versatility.
Features • Introduction to Caesar’s life, times, works, and style • 588
lines of unadapted Latin text selected from Caesar’s two historical
commentaries as well as from his extant correspondence, oratory, and
poetry: Bellum Gallicum Book 1: 1.1–1.4, 2.1–3.1, 7, 11–12, 34–36;
Book 2: 19.6–22.2; Book 5: 27; Book 6: 3–14, 6, 21, 24 • Bellum Civile
Selections from Five Essays and Four
Speeches, with Five Letters
James M. May
xxxviii + 136 pp., 1 illustration & 2 maps (2012) 5” x 7¾” Paperback
ISBN 978-0-86516-713-1
• $19.00 • £12.00 • €15.00
This selection offers a sample from Cicero’s oratorical, rhetorical, and
philosophical works as well as from his letters. It ranges from the preface
of his first published work, which expounds on the orator’s need
for both sapientia and eloquentia, to the defense of a client against a
murder charge, to philosophical musings on the nature of true friendship
that speak to us through time, to a curt and cool letter to his wife
Terentia, whom he was soon to divorce. Cicero’s prolific output offers
a rare luxury in ancient studies: the public persona is laid out beside
the private man, the politically expedient resounds against philosophical
ideals.
Features • Introduction to Cicero’s life, works, and times • 605 lines
of unadapted Latin text selected from eleven of Cicero’s orations, rhetorical
and philosophical writings, and letters: De inventione 1.1; In
Catilinam 2.22–25; Pro Archia poeta 12–16; Ad familiares 14.1, 14.18,
14.20, and 16.4; Pro P. Sestio 45–46; Ad Quintum fratrem 2.4; De oratore
1.16–20; Pro T. Annio Milone 24–29; Brutus 1–9; De amicitia
19–23; De officiis 1.134–137 • Notes at the back and complete vocabulary
• Suggested readings and chronological appendix • Two maps
Epic crowned the classical hierarchy of genres, in large part because of
the prestige of its subject matter—the establishment and maintenance
of divine and human order. In ancient Rome, epic’s significance begins
with Ennius, who adapted Greek dactylic hexameter into Latin, securing
the genre’s primacy as a narrative vehicle for celebrating Roman
achievements. From these beginnings Latin hexameter was refined in
the poetry of Lucretius and Catullus; the form flourished in the hands
of Vergil and his successors.
This edition offers twenty-seven selections from a rich corpus of
ten Latin epic poets. Though the focus is on republican and Augustan
epic, a sample of later imperial epic allows exploration of the full
expanse of Rome’s responses to her own history and political culture,
and to the art, history, and literature of ancient Greece.
Features • Introduction to the Latin epic genre and its authors, Latin
style, and meter • 624 lines of unadapted Latin text selected from ten
epics: Ennius, Annales 34–50, 72–91, 175–79; Lucretius, De rerum
natura 1.1–43, 1.936–50; Catullus, carmen 64.50–93; Vergil, Aeneid
1.1–11, 1.148–56, 1.338–68, 4.1–30, 4.160–72, 6.14–31, 6.179–82,
6.456–66, 8.625–34, 12.697–724; Ovid, Metamorphoses 1.1–20,
1.89–112, 4.706–39, 8.155–82, 8.741–76; Manilius, Astronomica
A Tibullus Reader
Seven Selected Elegies
Paul Allen Miller
ISBN 978-0-86516-724-7
Albius Tibullus, considered along with Ovid and Propertius one of the
canonical elegists of the Augustan period, was in antiquity deemed
the most accomplished of the three. Quintilian sums it up nicely:
“In my opinion Tibullus is a very elegant and concise author. There
are those who prefer Propertius.” Modern critics, however, have not
always been as favorable. The dreamlike quality of Tibullus’s text is
sometimes cited as evidence that his poems are smooth or soft, and
lacking formal integrity. Paul Allen Miller argues instead for seeing
them as a complex tissue of related, interwoven, and sometimes contradictory
themes. Miller’s commentary, informed by modern scholarship,
accepts the challenge of elucidating the often complex logic of
the selected poems.
This edition offers seven complete Tibullan elegies, selected from
across the poet’s range of topics: poems on rural life, on Delia, and
on homoerotic themes. The commentary provides grammatical and
historical information along with detailed explanations to aid in understanding
and better appreciating the poet’s unique style.
Features • Introduction to Tibullus’ poetry and the selected elegies,
the poet’s life, and the elegiac meter • 596 lines of unadapted Latin
text of seven complete Tibullus poems: 1.1, 1.2, 1.4, 1.5, 1.9, 2.1, 2.3
• Notes at the back, complete vocabulary, and suggested readings •
Glossary and index of technical terms, two illustrations
Paul Allen Miller is Carolina Distinguished Professor of Classics and
Comparative Literatures at the University of South Carolina.
Instructors interested in teaching a one or two semester course surveying Latin literature will be pleased to find
that the current and projected list of authors covers fairly well many of the authors for such a course: mid-Republic:
Plautus, Terence, Lucilius (Roman Verse Satire); late Republic: Sallust, Cicero, Caesar; Augustan: Horace (Roman
Verse Satire), Livy, Ovid, Tibullus, Propertius; Julio-Claudian: Lucan, Persius (Roman Verse Satire); late
first/early second century: Tacitus, Suetonius, Martial, Juvenal (Roman Verse Satire), Apuleius. (The volume with
selections from Latin epic will fill out this list a little more, as it includes selections from Statius, Silius Italicus,
Lucretius, and Vergil.)
The Stark, Dark Horror of Civil War
620 lines of unadapted Latin text from Lucan’s epic, Civil War.
Based on the length of the passages and grammatical detail in the
commentary, I feel this book is ideal for intermediate students,
although more advanced students will also find it valuable. The
notes are admirably thorough in information grammatical, historical,
and cultural. I particularly appreciate B.’s tendency in difficult
passages to offer in the notes a reordering of the Latin rather
than a translation for the student. This is a wonderful solution to
Lucan’s particular difficulties.
Biography That’s Enjoyable to Teach and to Read
527 lines of unadapted Latin text selections from each of the Lives of
the Caesars and the entire Life of Horace.
The best feature of this reader is the selection of the passages for
inclusion. At least one selection is included from each of the twelve
Lives of the Caesars (to which is added the Life of Horace as a nod
to Suetonius’ literary biography). As Osgood discusses in his introduction
(pp. xxii–xxv), Suetonius’ thematic arrangement and
serial composition invite comparison between subjects, for he
regularly treats a certain set of topics. But rather than trace one
topic throughout different Lives, Osgood has chosen selections
that represent the kind of topics that particularly interested Suetonius.
The opening selection describing the assassination of Julius
Caesar, for example, includes a long section on religious portents.
Dear Marie,
You and Lou became such valued fixtures in the lives of so many people in the classical profession over the past thirty-five years
that it is impossible to conceive of a world without Lou. I sincerely hope and expect that you will have the courage to continue
the impressive and indispensable work that the two of you carried on all these years. Lou will remain in my thoughts for the
rest of my life as a friend and supporter. Well do I remember Lou’s willingness to publish some of my early work at a time when
both he and I were embarking on our careers. During my years developing the Master of Arts in Teaching Latin and Classical
Humanities program at UMass, I constantly urged our students to expand the breadth of Latin authors that they could teach in
their Latin classrooms, and it would not have been possible for them to do this without the steady stream of textbooks coming
from Bolchazy-Carducci Publishers. The two of you did as much as anyone to arrest the catastrophic decline of Latin enrollments
that took place in the 1960’s and to promote the resurgence of Latin in the 70’s and beyond. Without the two of you, the
profession would not be where it is today. It was always such a pleasure to see both of you at professional meetings. All who attend
such meetings will be saddened not to see Lou, but they will be heartened if they see his and your great work continuing.
The Epic of Gilgamesh in English and Hebrew,
this book has its provenance in Zeev Raban’s
fourteen remarkable gouache illustrations of
The Epic of Gilgamesh. The artist’s family provided
us with these previously unpublished
and never-before printed works of art. Raban
(1890–1970), well-known for his work
on Biblical themes, especially the Song of
Songs, only once embarked upon a project
not derived directly from Jewish sources. His
Gilgamesh represents an attempt to appropriate
this ancient myth into nascent modern
Hebrew culture and its emerging reservoir of
visual imagery.
needing much background knowledge.
Longus’s Greek is straightforward and provides
opportunity for a thorough review of
Attic Greek. The running glossary and explanations
of the grammar and syntax serve to
move the reading along, allowing the instructor
to decide when review is necessary.
Palaephatus, a contemporary of Aristotle,
sought to reinforce belief in the historicity
of ancient heroes by tracing the evolution of
“actual” events into marvelously embellished
myths. On Unbelievable Tales is an early effort
to rationalize oft-told tales of the heroes and
monstrous creatures of Greek mythology. It
Lou’s contribution to the field of Classics was unique and profound—the very
existence of Bolchazy-Carducci and the wide-ranging materials in its catalogue
will be one monument to his life and achievements. But I’ll miss the equally wideranging
conversations we had over the years at conventions; it’s not that easy to
find people of kindred spirit, and Lou was one of those I most looked forward to
seeing at CAMWS and APA gatherings.
I hope that the company and the staff will be able to continue his work. No one
but Lou could have imagined and created Bolchazy-Carducci, and now we can
hardly imagine the world of Classics without it.
