2-SCHOLARSHIPS, AWARDS,<br />

BURSARIES AND PRIZES<br />

A. ENTRANCE OR ADMISSION SCHOLARSHIPS,<br />

AWARDS, AND BURSARIES<br />

Admission scholarships are awarded primarily on the basis of<br />

academic performance. Please note that applications are required<br />

for specific categories of entrance scholarships. See “General<br />

Awards Regulations” below for more details.<br />

Algoma U Awards of Excellence<br />

Algoma U Awards of Excellence are available to all Canadian citizen<br />

secondary-school graduates who have completed all their qualifying<br />

requirements in the academic year prior to commencing university<br />

studies at Algoma University. Canadian citizen International<br />

Baccalaureate (IB) Program Diploma recipients are equally<br />

considered for Awards of Excellence. To qualify, candidates must<br />

be entering into their first undergraduate program and enrol in and<br />

maintain 30 credits over 2 consecutive terms (fall/winter) of study.<br />

Awards are based on the average of the 6 best, U or M final grades<br />

presented for admission. Algoma U Awards of Excellence are<br />

renewable if candidates maintain an average of 80% each academic<br />

year on 30 credits taken in two consecutive terms (fall/winter).<br />

Candidates must be enrolled in 30 credits over two consecutive<br />

terms (fall/winter) of study in the current year they are receiving<br />

the award. Four such award levels are as follows:<br />

• Algoma U Award of Excellence – Platinum<br />

An entrance award of $3,000, renewable for up to three additional<br />

years, to all candidates presenting an entrance average 90% or<br />

better.<br />

Maximum value: $12,000.<br />

• Algoma U Award of Excellence – Gold<br />

An entrance award of $2,500, renewable for up to three additional<br />

years, to all candidates presenting an entrance average of 85 –<br />

89.9%.<br />

Maximum value: $10,000<br />

• Algoma U Award of Excellence – Silver<br />

An entrance award of $1,500, renewable for up to three additional<br />

years, to all candidates presenting an entrance average of 80 –<br />

84.9%.<br />

Maximum value: $6,000<br />

The Algoma U Awards of Excellence are non-cumulative with the<br />

Edward and Frank McGrath Award of Excellence, the Carl J. Sanders<br />

Scholarship, Peggy & Willmont MacDonnell Scholarship, the City<br />

of Sault Ste. Marie Admission Scholarship I & II, the Algoma U<br />

Achievement Scholarship and John R. Rhodes Scholarship.<br />

IB Diploma: Awards of Excellence Guideline<br />

IB diploma points Award of Excellence Amount<br />

40 - 45 Platinum $3000.00<br />

35 - 39 Gold $2500.00<br />

30 - 34 Silver $1500.00<br />

Edward and Frank McGrath Award of Excellence<br />

Through a generous contribution from brothers, the late Frank and<br />

Edward McGrath, a $3,750 scholarship, renewable for up to three<br />

additional years, is available to the secondary school graduate who<br />

has completed all his or her qualifying requirements in the academic<br />

year prior to commencing university studies at Algoma U and who<br />

presents the highest average over 90% on the 6 best, U or M courses<br />

presented for admission. The candidate must enrol in and maintain 30<br />

credits over 2 consecutive terms of study (fall/winter). For renewal,<br />

candidates must maintain an average of 80% each academic year<br />

on 30 credits taken in two consecutive terms (fall/winter) of study.<br />

Candidates must be enrolled in and maintain 30 credits over two<br />

consecutive terms (fall/winter) of study in the current year they are<br />

receiving the award. Maximum value: $15,000. This scholarship is<br />

non-cumulative with the Algoma U Awards of Excellence, the Carl<br />

J. Sanders Scholarship, Peggy & Willmont MacDonnell Scholarship,<br />

the City of Sault Ste. Marie Admission Scholarship I & II, the Algoma<br />

U Achievement Scholarship and John R. Rhodes Scholarship.<br />

Carl J. Sanders Scholarship<br />

In recognition of the generosity of the Sanders family, a $3,500<br />

scholarship, renewable for up to three additional years, is available<br />

to the secondary school graduate who has completed all his or her<br />

qualifying requirements in the academic year prior to commencing<br />

university studies at Algoma U and who presents the second-highest<br />

average over 90% on the 6 best, U or M courses presented for<br />

admission. The candidate must enrol in and maintain 30 credits over<br />

2 consecutive terms of study (fall/winter). For renewal, candidates<br />

must maintain an average of 80% each academic year on 30 credits<br />

taken in two consecutive terms (fall/winter) of study. Candidates<br />

must be enrolled in and maintain 30 credits over two consecutive<br />

terms (fall/winter) of study in the current year they are receiving the<br />

award. Maximum value: $14,000. This scholarship is non-cumulative<br />

with the Algoma U Awards of Excellence, Edward & Frank McGrath<br />

Award of Excellence, Peggy & Willmont MacDonnell scholarship, the<br />

City of Sault Ste. Marie Admission Scholarship I & II, the Algoma U<br />

Achievement Scholarship and John R. Rhodes Scholarship.<br />

Peggy and Willmont MacDonnell Scholarship<br />

In honour of Peggy and Willmont MacDonnell, benefactors to Algoma<br />

U, this $3,000 scholarship, renewable for up to three additional years,<br />

is available to the secondary school graduate who has completed<br />

all his or her qualifying requirements in the academic year prior<br />

to commencing university studies at Algoma U and who presents<br />

the third-highest average over 90% on the 6 best, U or M courses<br />

presented for admission. The candidate must enrol in 30 credits over<br />

2 consecutive terms of study (fall/winter). For renewal candidates<br />

must maintain an average of 80% each academic year on 30 credits<br />

taken in two consecutive terms (fall/winter) of study. Candidates<br />

must be enrolled in and maintain 30 credits over two consecutive<br />

terms (fall/winter) of study in the current year they are receiving the<br />

award. Maximum value: $12,000. This scholarship is non-cumulative<br />

with the Algoma U Awards of Excellence, the Carl J. Sanders, Edward<br />

& Frank McGrath Award of Excellence, the City of Sault Ste. Marie<br />

Admission Scholarship I & II, the Algoma U Achievement Scholarship<br />
