IC-102 SEMI-PARAMETRIC LEARNING FOR CLASSIFICATION OF PITTING CORROSION DETECTED BY ACOUSTIC EMISSION Asa Prateepasen, Pakorn Kaewtrakulpong, Chalermkiat Jirarungsatean The 1 st International Conference on Advanced Nondestructive Evaluation (ANDE 2005), November 7-9, 2005, ICC, Jeju, Korea This paper presents a Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) technique, Acoustic Emission (AE) to classify pitting corrosion severity in austenitic stainless steel 304 (SS304). The corrosion severity is graded roughly into five levels based on the depth of corrosion. A number of time-domain AE parameters were extracted and used as features in our classification methods. In this work, we present practical classification techniques based on Bayesian Statistical Decision Theory, namely Maximum A Posteriori (MAP) and Maximum Likelihood (ML) classifiers. The MAP classifier gives an optimal rate of classification errors where there is no difference in the cost of misclassification while the ML is optimal when the costs and a priori probabilities are unknown. Mixture of Gaussian distributions is used as the classconditional probability density function for the classifiers. The mixture model has several appealing attributes such as the ability to model any probability density function (pdf) with any precision (compared to other parametric pdf’s) and the efficiency of parameter-estimation algorithm (compared to non-parametric pdf’s). However, the model still suffers from modelorder-selection and initialization problems which greatly limit its applications. In this work, we introduced a semi-parametric scheme for learning the mixture model which can solve the mentioned difficulties. The method was compared with conventional Feed-Forward Neural Network and Probabilistic Neural Network to determine its performance. We found that our proposed methods gave much lower classification-error rate and also far smaller variance of the classifiers. IC-103 INTEGRATION OF AE FEATURES USING BELIEF NETWORK FOR CLASSIFYING NDT DATA Nawil Tha-ue, Asa Prateepasen International Conference on Simulation and Modeling 2005 (SIMMOD 2005), January 17- 19, 2005, The Rose Garden Aprime Resort, Nakorn Pathom, Thailand, pp. 213-219 111 This paper proposes an implementation of Belief Network based on Bayes' rule to classify Nondestructive Testing (NDT) data. Two NDT application works which are micro spot welding and corrosion monitoring were chosen to exhibit the performance of the Belief Network. Acoustic emission (AE), a premature NDT method, was used to capture transient elastic waves generated by the rapid release of energy from the sources of the two applications. In micro spot welding, AE parameters correlated with the stage of nugget deformation were investigated and extracted to divide quality of the nugget into three levels according to strength and size of the nugget. In corrosion monitoring, AE parameters related to the severity of the pitting corrosion were used to grade corrosion severity into five levels depended on the pitting depth. Experimental works were set up and data were cautiously recorded. Consequence the Belief Network, named Netica operated on the principle of “Bayes rule” was utilized. The set of feature vectors of the correlated data from the two applications were divided into two sets one to train the network and the other to test it. The outcomes of prediction showed that the overall success rate of the network in detecting perfection of the nugget in micro spot welding and in monitoring of corrosion severity were high with low error rate. IC-104 MEASUREMENT OF VALVE LEAKAGE RATE USING ACOUSTIC EMISSION Watit Kaewwaewnoi, Asa Prateepasen, Pakorn Kaewtrakulpong The 2005 Electrical Engineering/Electronics, Computer, Telecommunications, and Information Technology International Conference (ECTI-CON 2005), May 12-13, 2005, Asia Pattaya Beach Hotel, Pattaya, Cholburi, Thailand, pp. 597-600 This paper presents a novel method to measure leakage rate of gas through valve using Acoustic Emission (AE) technique. A set of various sizes of ball valve, varied from one to three inches, was tested with a range of valve- International Conference

112 inlet pressure. Leakage rate through valve was carried out by calculating the pressure difference in a chamber. An AE sensor was mounted on the case of the valve to capture the AE signal. The AE signal was then amplified and filtered and fed into a Vector Signal Analyzer, model IIP 89410A. The sampling rate of the analyzer was set at 10 MHz. AE parameters which correlated with leakage rate were identified. AE average signal level (ASL) and AE root mean square (AErms) exhibited high correlation with the leakage rate. Finally an equation to relate the detected AE signal to the leakage rate at different valve-inlet pressures and valve sizes was established. IC-105 TIME-BASED MANUFACTURING IN WOOD FURNITURE PRODUCTION Tuanjai Somboonwiwat, Phanitan Teerasakwitchaya The 2005 Electrical Engineering/Electronics, Computer, Telecommunications, and Information Technology International Conference (ECTI-CON 2005), May 12-13, 2005, Asia Pattaya Beach Hotel, Pattaya, Cholburi, Thailand, pp. 88-94 This paper presents the time-based manufacturing method that gives improved response capability in producing mixed wood furniture products. Production of the mixed products in the wood furniture industry can be detailed and complicated. The products include small lots of various models and designs including tables and chairs. In addition, the make-to-order strategy for supplying customer demand can present problems, leading to excessive production time and generate nonvalue added waste. Cellular Manufacturing System (CMS) is applied to the Furniture manufacturing shop floor to yield quick responses to manufacturing changes and to reduce lead time. Bond Energy Algorithm (BEA) and Complete Linkage Clustering (CLC) are used to form groups of parts and machines, and inter-and-intra-group movement is measured for the BEA or CLC selection. Consequently, the simulation models of the existing system and cellular manufacturing system are built. Faculty of Science IC-106 EFFECT OF ACID DOPANTS ON FORMATION RATE AND MORPHOLOGY OF KMUTT Annual Research Abstracts 2005 POLYANILINE NANOFIBERS PREPARED BY INTERFACIAL POLYMERIZATION Suppalak Angkaew, Rawin Teopipithaporn, Sakarin Nakin, Mayuree Kittidechachan The 11 th Asian Chemical Congress (11th ACC), August 24-26, 2005, Korea University, Seoul, Korea Polyaniline (PANi) nanofibers can be readily synthesized by the interfacial polymerization. This work studies how the type and concentration of acid dopants affect the resulting morphology and formation rate of PANi nanofibers. The interfacial reaction was performed in an aqueous/chloroform system with ammonium peroxydisulfate (APS) as an oxidant. Four types of acid dopants (HC1, H 2 SO 4 , HNO 3 , and HCIO 4 ) were studied, each of which had concentration varied from 1 to 5 M. The results showed that types of acid dopants affect the size of nanofibers. The size of nanofibers obtained from different acid dopants varies as HC1 < HNO 3 ~ H 2 SO 4 < HCIO 4 . These results are similar to those found in the previous report. We also found that the rate of nanofiber formation is not affected by the type of acid used but by the concentration of the acid dopant, particularly when the concentration is higher than 2 M. The slower formation rate was found at the higher acid concentration. It is suggested that the slower rate at higher acid concentration may involve the suppression of the deprotonation process during the propagation step of polyaniline polymerization. High acid concentration provides high concentration of H+ ion in the solution mixture and, thus, thermodynamically opposes the deprotonation equilibrium. IC-107 UV POLYMERIZATION AND CHROMIC PROPERTIES OF DIACETYLENE CONTAINING POLYMER Thunyarat Kaewpetch, Tanida Saripun, Suppalak Angkaew The 11 th Asian Chemical Congress (11th ACC), August 24-26, 2005, Korea University, Seoul, Korea Oxidative coupling reaction of a bisacetylenic ester, 8ABP yielded the diacetyelene containing polymer (the macromonomer), P(8ABP) as shown in the synthesis scheme below. This macromonomer is a polymerric International Conference
