KMUTT Annual Research Abstracts 2005 optimality and computation speed. IJ-006 A STOCHASTIC KNOWLEDGE-BASED THAI TEXT-TO-SPEECH SYSTEM Lalita Narupiyakul, Apinya Khumya, Booncharoen Sirinaovakul, Nick Cercone Mathematical and Computer Modelling, Vol. 42, No. 1-2, July 2005, pp. 1-16 We describe the development of our Thai text-to-speech (TTS) system. Thai TTS system transforms Thai texts to the sequence of appropriate sounds for Thai speech. Thai complexity requires approximately four hundred rules including main and specific rules to derive most pronunciations for our rule-based approach grounded on Thai syllable structure analysis. An exception dictionary that covers anomalous pronunciations and a rule inference engine that determines sentence structures are included to improve the quality of Thai TTS. Speech generation by concatenative synthesis is a sequential step that transforms sound symbols to synthetic speech. We have tested our system with magazine and internet articles, together with articles from the experiments of other researchers and we report the results of this informal evaluation. Most syllables from Thai written strings can be converted to phonetic symbols. With a compact Thai unit inventory, the concatenative synthesis system can synthesize synthetic speech covering many Thai syllables. IJ-007 WALKING PEDESTRIAN TRACKING AMONG SEVERAL PEDESTRIANS BY DYNAMIC CAMERA Kosin Chamnongthai, Surachate Boonrat International Journal of Uncertainty, Fuzziness and Knowledge-Based Systems, Vol. 13, No. 2, 2005, pp. 205-223 In tracking a walking pedestrian among multiple walking pedestrians by movable camera, the pedestrian-target determination is sometimes mistaken, and it needs real-time image processing. This paper proposes an approach for tracking a walking pedestrian among multiple walking pedestrians with dynamic camera mounted on a pan platform. The objective of this approach is to correctly select the target, and maintain target within field of view. The approach has three processes, consisting of motion extraction, target prediction and camera movement respectively. The motion extraction with background compensation is performed to determine the groups of moving edges. In the target prediction, target position is predicted by using appropriate size window to identify target among several target candidates and to increase the accuracy. The final calculated distance, and direction against target and error are cooperated to determine the predicted target position. At the final process, the camera is moved in order to locate the center of the view at the target center. The experiments were demonstrated by tracking a walking pedestrians at 1 m/s speed and five meters distance from camera. Each experiment roughly consumed 480 ms/frame processing time at 8.5 rev./s motor speed. The results showed that the system error was 5-8% for five walking patterns of a walking pedestrian situation. In the situation of multiple walking pedestrians, the demonstration were performed by tracking a pedestrian among two and three pedestrians, the results revealed that the system succeeded in maintaining the target within the field of view excepting the cases that the movement was suddenly changed in term of direction and speed. IJ-008 FINAL CONSONANT SEGMENTATION FOR THAI SYLLABLE BY USING VOWEL CHARACTERISTICS AND WAVELET PACKET TRANSFORM Kosin Chamnongthai, Wudthipong Pichitwong, Piyasawat Navaratana Na Ayudhya ECTI-CIT Transactions on Computer and Information Theory, Vol. 1, No. 1, May 2005, pp. 50-62 Since Thai final consonant is unique comparing with other languages and plays key role in recognizing the Thai syllables, segmentation of the final consonant phoneme from the vowel is needed and capable of decreasing the amount of recognition patterns and also improving the recognition accuracy. This paper presents a technique to separate the final consonant phoneme from Thai syllable by exploiting the vowel characteristics and Wavelet packet transform. In this method, ending of the vowel phoneme (starting of the final consonant) is considered by vowel characteristic, which has the highest energy in the syllable. The frequency range having this qualification is selected as 5 International Journal

6 vowels. It is then employed to determine the filter for vowel signal. The Wavelet packet transform that is appropriate for discriminating vowel (high frequency and long period) from final consonant phoneme (low frequency and short period) is used as the filter. And the ending of vowels frequency signal component is considered to be the segmentation point of the final consonant. The experiments have been performed by 4,350 samples of syllable recorded from 15 males and 15 females. The experimental results gained the 92.89 % accuracy. IJ-009 ONE-CYCLE CONTROL AND RANDOM HYSTERESIS IN ASYNCHRONOUS SIGMA- DELTA MODULATION Apinan Aurasopon, Pinit Kumhom, Kosin Chamnongthai IEICE Transactions on Fundamentals of Electronics, Communications and Computer Sciences, Vol. E88-A, No. 2, February 2005, pp. 469-475 This paper proposes a new controlling technique of asynchronous sigma delta modulation with characteristic of one-cycle response. This technique can reject power source perturbations in one cycle period and reduce the peaks of harmonic with one side random hysteresis technique. The proposed method was analyzed, designed, and experimented in a full bridge inverter. The distortion of output voltage and the harmonic peaks were used to measure the performance of the proposed technique. The experimental results show that the proposed technique can reduce the peak of harmonic up to 0.42 p.u and the harmonic distortion 5.9% at the ripple of 20% of power source when comparing with convention asynchronous sigma delta modulation. IJ-010 NEURAL NETWORK HANDOFF ALGORITHM IN A JOINT TERRESTRIAL- HAPS CELLULAR SYSTEM Raungrong Suleesathira, Sunisa Kunarak ECTI Transactions on Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communications, Vol. 3, No. 2, August 2005, pp. 164-174 Handoff algorithm is used in wireless cellular systems to decide when and to which base station (BS) to handoff in order that the services can be continued uninterrupted. In this KMUTT Annual Research Abstracts 2005 paper, we propose a handoff algorithm based on the neural network in a joint system of terrestrial and high altitude platform station (HAPS) cellular systems. As a revolutionary wireless system, HAPS can supply services for uncovered area improving total capacity of service-limited area by a terrestrial BS. Radial- Basis function (RBF) network is used for making a handoff decision to the chosen neighbor BS. The neural inputs consist of the averaged signal strength received from the serving and nearby BSs, user directions estimated by the MUSIC algorithm on an antenna array, and traffic intensities. Positioning a mobile station (MS) is obtained by apply the timing advance (TA) concept. Performance comparisons among the presented method and using the backpropagation (BP) neural network and the conventional Hysteresis method are given in forms of (1) handoff rate, blocking rate, dropping rate at the acceptable grade of service and (2) the difference between the signal power radiated by the serving BS and the minimum required received signal power before call dropping for both Hata model and Rayleigh fading. IJ-011 PREPARATION OF ACTIVATED CARBONS FROM COFFEE RESIDUE FOR THE ADSORPTION OF FORMALDEHYDE Virote Boonamnuayvitaya, Srisuda Sae-ung, Wiwut Tanthapanichakoon Separation and Purification Technology, Vol. 42, No. 2, 2005, pp. 159-168 Six types of activated carbons were prepared from coffee residues by varying activating agents of zinc chloride, nitrogen, carbon dioxide and steam. Characterization of these samples was performed by using nitrogen adsorption isotherms, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) in order to understand the coffee residue activated carbon and its adsorptive capacity. All of activated carbons and one commercial activated carbon (CH-I1000) were subjected to the adsorption of formaldehyde vapor. The coffee activated carbon prepared with ZnCl 2 impregnation and nitrogen activation (CZn-N 2 ) demonstrates its highest capacity of formaldehyde adsorption owing to the hydrophilic functional groups of O-H, C=O, C-O on the surface.
