KMUTT Annual Research

KMUTT Annual Research Abstracts 2005 The 15 th International Photovoltaic Science & Engineering Conference (PVSEC-15), October 10-15, 2005, Shanghai, China, pp. 716-717 This paper presents the design and development of an online outdoor standard testing for photovoltaic module via internet with Australian Standard AS 2915-1987. This system is based on high-performance 8-bit Rabbit 2000 microprocessor from Rabbit Semiconductor Inc. The rabbit microprocessor will test PV module, analyze all data and send the data from PV module to user for control, display and record data in digital form. The interface program of this system designs on personal computer. The system circuit box is connected PV module to personal computer via local area networks or the internet network. This system program is graphic user interface that can change the parameters for outdoor standard testing. Test results show that the proposed system can effectively realize the real time monitoring and testing. IC-159 TEACHING OF A LARGE CLASSROOM USING TEAM AND INDIVIDUAL LEARNING : A CASE STUDY FOR ELECTRONIC STUDENTS IN ELECTRICAL TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION AT KMUTT IN THAILAND Surachai Suksakulchai The 19 th International Conference, “Learning Organization in a Learning World” (ICLORD 2005), April 18-22, 2005, King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi, Bangkok, Thailand, pp. 869-872 When teaching to a large class, 45 to 100 students, it is very difficult to make the whole students to pass the course with satisfactory results. In this research, team learning (groups of three) and individual learning are used to help each other understanding and participating in and after the class. The group member will be changed after the first examination. The new groups are rearranged based on their test scores and their color zones. The color zones (green, yellow, pink and red zones) are used as an indicator to students in order to draw students' attention to their learning status. Students in the same color zones are arranged as the same group (of three). Students in the green zone are the top rank and students in the red zone are the lowest rank. 129 Each color zone is given with different levels of works. The green zone students are given with more difficult works in order to enhance their knowledge. On the other hand, students in the red zone are taken care individually by the teacher and there volunteer buddies from the top rank. This activity is called "Friend assists Friend Project". A volunteer from green zone students will assist a small number of students from the red zone to do their homework including tutorials. The same strategy is applied to the yellow and pink zone students but different levels of works. After the second examination, students in red zone reduced from 12.50% to 1.04%, students in pink zone reduced from 29.17% to 9.38%, students in yellow zone increased from 31.25% to 38.54%, and students in green zone increased from 27.08% to 51.04%, when compared with the first test. The result showed that this technique can greatly improve the student outcomes for a large classroom and the class was full of activities that would encourage students to study with fun and active. IC-160 RESONANT BALLAST FOR PHOTOVOLTAIC POWERED STREET LIGHTING SYSTEM IN REMOTE RURAL AREA Tanes Tanitteerapan, Suriyan Pan-A The 15 th International Photovoltaic Science & Engineering Conference (PVSEC-15), October 10-15, 2005, Shanghai, China, pp. 1013-1014 This paper, electronic resonant ballast for a small photovoltaic powered street lighting system in remote rural area was proposed. The street lighting system was designed for rural area where the electrical transmission line cannot be commonly serviced and it is the cascade systems of the solar arrays, switching battery charger, and electronics ballast with small fluorescent lamp. The ballast is a simple single switch inverter having low harmonic sinusoidal output voltage waveform. E class inverter operation was selected to perform the ballast due to it has benefits of high efficiency and low harmonic distortion at output voltage waveform that is be better than the general square waveform electronics ballast, which has high harmonics voltage distortion. Circuit implementation of the ballast consists of an input inductor, an active switch device, and a series L-C resonant circuit. The ballast output voltage was oscillated as high frequency sinusoidal voltage waveform due to International Conference

130 operation of the L-C resonant circuit that connected to fluorescent lamp. The active switch device was controlled by fixed duty ratio and switching frequency PWM controller. The control circuit was done by using a simple wellknown PWM controller IC number SG3524. To verify the resonant ballast design, the circuit experimentation of 10Watts of electronic resonant ballast was applied. From the result, the 12 VDC from battery was generated to be 165 VAC of high frequency sinusoidal voltage waveform, low harmonic voltage, at 50 kHz for 10 Watts fluorescent lamp ignition. IC-161 LOW HARMONIC CURRENTS PRE- REGULATOR BASED ON DC-DC BOOST CONVERTERS FOR SWITCHING POWER SUPPLY IN INSTRUMENTATION SYSTEM Tanes Tanitteerapan, Ekachai Thanpoo International Conference on Instrumentation, Control and Information Technology (SICE 2005), August 8-10, 2005, Okayama University, Okayama, Japan This paper, a low harmonic currents preregulator based on DC-DC boost converters for switching power supply in instrumentation system controlling by a new simple PWM controller was proposed. The pre-regulator is a system adding between the AC-DC bridge rectifier and DC-DC converter in the power supply unit for reducing the input current waveform distortion. The DC-DC boost converter was designed to operate as the preregulator in continuous conduction mode (CCM). To control an active switch of the preregulator for achieving low harmonic current distortion (THD) in the input current waveform, the switch duty ratios were determined by comparing an integral signal derived from the sensed switch current with the generated negative slope ramp carrier waveform in each one switching period. The negative slope ramp carrier waveform is the imitation of the input current waveform behavior in each one switching period, which was determined from the DC conversion ratio of boost converter in unity power factor condition occurred (voltage and current waveforms in-phase condition). The negative slope ramp carrier waveform generator was made from the simple circuit implementations, which consisted of one inverting integrator amplifier with reset clock, one inverting amplifier, and one differential KMUTT Annual Research Abstracts 2005 amplifier. Because the analog multiplier, current control loop, rectified input voltage sensing were not required in the controller, the control circuit implementation is very simple. To verify the proposed pre-regulator, the circuit experimentation of 350W boost converter with the averaging switch current controller was applied. In the experimentation, the variation of load was done from 10% to full-load conditions. From the result, the input current waveform was shaped to be closely sinusoidal, implying low harmonic current (about 5% at full-load and not higher 15% in light load condition). IC-162 HEAT TRANSFER ENHANCEMENT OF REFRIGERATION SYSTEM UNDER ELECTRIC FIELD Taveewat Suparos ASME Summer Heat Transfer Conference (HT2005), July 17-22, 2005, Westin St. Francis Hotel, San Francisco, California, USA., p. 47 The results of an experimental study of electrohydrodynamic (EHD) enhancement of a refrigeration system are presented in this paper. A high intensity electric field was applied to the bank of tubes of condenser and evaporator. The electrode system carrying the high voltage comprised fourty-five copper rods placed in between and around the tube of condenser and evaporator. Experiments were performed at cooling load values of 0.5, 0.75 and 1.0 ton of refrigeration (TR) and applied voltages of 0-25 KV. The calculated results of heat transfer coefficient for air and refrigerant agree well with experimental data, it is found that the performance improvement increases with the ratio of air flow rate when electrohydrodynamic is applied. IC-163 PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS OF CPC SOLAR COLLECTOR WITH AUTOMATIC SUN TRACKING Taveewat Suparos ASME Summer Heat Transfer Conference (HT2005), July 17-22, 2005, Westin St. Francis Hotel, San Francisco, California, USA., p. 24 This paper presents an analysis was made on the thermal performance of the CPC solar collector with automatic suns tracking in which the water flows in the copper tube. The results were compared with experimental results. International Conference
