KMUTT Annual Research Abstracts 2005 linearity arising from axial force. The non-linear eigenvalue problem is solved by the direct iteration method to obtain the beam’s non-linear frequencies and corresponding mode shapes for specified vibration amplitudes. We also present changes in the frequency of vibration as a function of amplitude, demonstrating the beam non-linearity. A more accurate solution analyzed in the frequency domain of the direct numerical integration method is adopted as an alternative solution. Large amplitude vibration experimental modal analysis was also conducted to complement the analytical results. The measured results were found to be in good agreement with those obtained from two analytical solutions. IJ-024 LARGE DEFLECTIONS OF VARIABLE- ARC-LENGTH BEAMS UNDER UNIFORM SELF WEIGHT: ANALYTICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL Tawich Pulngern, Marvin W. Halling, Somchai Chucheepsakul Structural Engineering and Mechanics, Vol. 19, No. 4, 2005, pp. 413-423 This paper presents the solution of large static deflection due to uniformly distributed self weight and the critical or maximum applied uniform loading that a simply supported beam with variable-arc-length can resist. Two analytical approaches are presented and validated experimentally. The first approach is a finite-element discretization of the span length based on the variational formulation, which gives the solution of large static sag deflections for the stable equilibrium case. The second approach is the shooting method based on an elastica theory formulation. This method gives the results of the stable and unstable equilibrium configurations, and the critical uniform loading. Experimental studies were conducted to complement the analytical results for the stable equilibrium case. The measured large static configurations are found to be in good agreement with the two analytical approaches, and the critical uniform self weight obtained experimentally also shows good correlation with the shooting method. IJ-025 NONLINEAR FREE VIBRATIONS OF MARINE RISERS/PIPES TRANSPORTING FLUID Sakdirat Kaewunruen, Julapot Chiravatchradej, Somchai Chucheepsakul Ocean Engineering, Vol. 32, No. 3-4, 2005, pp. 417-440 An investigation emphasizing on nonlinear free vibrations of marine risers/pipes to determine the nonlinear natural frequencies and their corresponding mode shapes is presented in this paper. Based on the virtual work-energy functional of marine risers/pipes, the structural model developed consists of the strain energy due to axial deformation, strain energy due to bending, virtual works due to effective tension and external forces, and also the kinetic energy due to both the riser and the internal fluid motions. Nonlinear equations of motion coupled in axial and transverse displacements are derived through the Hamilton's principle. To analyze the nonlinear free vibrational behaviors, the system formulation has been reformed to the eigenvalue problem. The nonlinear fundamental frequencies and the corresponding numerically exact mode shapes are determined by the modified direct iteration technique incorporating with the inverse iteration. The significant influences of the marine riser's parameters studied on its nonlinear phenomena are then illustrated here first. Those parameters demonstrate the nonlinear effects due to the flexural rigidity, top tensions, internal flow velocities, and static offsets. 11 IJ-026 VEHICULAR BASIC NOISE MODEL WITH 20 SECONDS OF EQUIVALENT SOUND LEVEL Pichai Pamanikabud, Marupong Tansatcha IASME Transactions, Vol. 2, No. 5, July 2005, pp. 769-773 Basic noise model of vehicle is the primary parameter in the analysis and modeling of the main highway noise forecasting model. The model represents noise level with respect to its speed that created by each type of vehicle as the traffic noise source running on the highway section. The objective of this study is to analyzed and develop the basic noise model that can be effectively used for each vehicle type in Thailand. The novel technique of equivalent sound level measurement in the time period of 20 second-L eq (20s) is employed in this study. Nine vehicle types on highways in Thailand are under the investigation. The L eq (20s) can cover the range of noise levels of all vehicle types International Journal

12 better than the previous models, which are in form of L max and L eq (10s). The vehicular basic noise model from this new analytical technique, therefore, can provide the more efficiency prediction of vehicle noise in the real running condition on highway. IJ-027 MOTORWAY NOISE MODELLING BASED ON PERPENDICULAR PROPAGATION ANALYSIS OF TRAFFIC NOISE Marupong Tansatcha, Pichai Pamanikabud, Alan Lex Brown, Joseph Kwame Affum Applied Acoustics, Vol. 66, No. 10, October 2005, pp. 1135-1150 A model for motorway traffic noise has been obtained from measurements along the Bangkok–Chonburi motorway. The model’s parameters include traffic volume and combination, the average spot speed of each type of vehicle and the physical conditions of the motorway in terms of right-of-way width, number of lanes, lane width, shoulder width, and median width for both of the main carriageways and frontage roads. The noise level that is generated by each type of vehicle has been analyzed according to the propagation in the direction perpendicular to the center line of motorway’s carriageway. The total traffic noise is then analyzed from traffic volume of all vehicle types on both sides of carriageways and frontage roads. The basic noise levels used in the motorway traffic noise model are modified according to the effective ground effect along the propagation path. The final result of this study is that a motorway traffic noise model based on the perpendicular propagation analysis technique performs well in a statistical goodness-of-fit test against the field data, and therefore, can be used effectively in traffic noise prediction for related or similar motorway projects. IJ-028 STRENGTH AND DEFORMATION CHARACTERISTICS OF FLAT AND CUBICAL RUBBER TYRE CHIP-SAND MIXTURES Dennes Taganajan Bergado, Sompote Youwai, Amnart Rittirong Geotechnique, Vol. 55, No. 8, 2005, pp. 603-606 The strength and deformation characteristics of flat rubber tyre chips with and KMUTT Annual Research Abstracts 2005 without sand mixture at different mixing ratios were investigated. Large-scale drained triaxial tests were conducted with a specimen size of 300 mm diameter and 600 mm height. Two factors were found to significantly affect their strength and deformation characteristics: the sand content, and the shape of tyre chips. Flat rubber tyre chips have nearly linear stress-strain and volume change-strain relationships and are very compressible, relative to sand. The triaxial test results for cubical tyre chips, obtained from the previous study conducted on small triaxial tests, were compared with those for flat tyre chips. Flat tyre chips yielded more compressibility than cubical chips. Adding flat tyre chips tends to transform the mixed material to be ductile. With higher sand content, the flat tyre chips act as reinforcement and increase the shear strength of tyre chip-sand mixtures. According to the results of large triaxial tests, the compressibility is significantly and proportionally reduced as sand is added up to 50% by volume, beyond which the reduction of compressibility is insignificant. The rubber-tosand ratio of 30:70 by weight or 50:50 by volume marks the onset of sand-dominated strength and deformation characteristics. IJ-029 PREDICTION OF EVAPORATION OF DEFROSTED WATER IN REFRIGERATOR WATER TRAYS Somchai Wongwises, Boonanan Anansauwapak International Communications in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol. 32, No. 3-4, February 2005, pp. 403-415 The main concern of the present paper is to simulate the evaporation of defrosted water in domestic refrigerator water trays. The tray is assumed to be located above in vicinity to the compressor head, and part of the heat used to evaporate the water is heat from the compressor. The mathematical model is based on that of Bansal and Xie. In modeling, the basic physical equations are conservations of mass and energy. The model includes the various relevant parameters, e.g., the ambient air temperature, relative humidity of ambient air, initial temperature of defrosted water, area of water tray, initial mass of water in the tray, and characteristic length and area of the compressor shell. The experiments are done in two steps: finding of the correlations between the temperature of the compressor shell and the International Journal
