KMUTT Annual Research Abstracts 2005 of calcite are reported. It is surprising to find that the ratio of Mn 2+ concentration present in FFS to those in PCL shells evaluated from ESR spectra is as much as 10:1. IJ-063 EFFECTS OF HEAT TREATMENT ON NANOCRYSTALLINE FORMATIONS IN FE 40 NI 40 (SI + B) 19 MO 1-2 AMORPHOUS RIBBON Somjet Saiseng, Pongtip Winotai, Pichet Limsuwan Physica Status Solidi (a), Vol. 202, No. 1, 2005, pp. 46-54 Effects of heat treatment on Fe 40 Ni 40 (Si+ B) 19 Mo 1-2 were monitored by Mössbauer spectroscopy (MR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Mössbauer spectra were fitted by using the PC- MOS II program to obtain such parameters as hyperfine field, isomer shift and quadrupole splitting of samples annealed for two hours in argon at different temperatures. The change in direction of local magnetization and the transformation of amorphous to crystalline phase were observed. Heat treatments near the crystallization temperature between 450-500 o C resulted in nanograins of α-Fe, α-Fe(Si) and t- Fe 2 B embedded in the remaining uncrystallized amorphous matrix. DSC data showed that the ribbon exhibited two-step crystallizations at 454 o C and 525 o C, respectively. The first crystallization corresponded mainly to soft ferromagnetic α-Fe, α-Fe(Si) and some minor t-Fe 2 B phase formations, while the second, corresponded to t- Fe 3 B phase. Further heat treatment at 600 o C led to complete crystallizations at which the ferromagnetic phases α-Fe and α-Fe(Si) transformed to a paramagnetic phase fcc-FeNi, and ferromagnetic phases of c-FeNi 3 , t-Fe 2 B, t- Fe 3 B, and Ni 2 Si, respectively. Due to the high magnetic anisotropy of t-Fe 2 B and other phases as well as to keep the crystallites in the nano region, the Fe 40 Ni 40 (Si-B) 19 Mo 1-2 ribbon should not be heated above 500 o C for the superior magnetic properties. IJ-064 PURIFICATION AND CHARACTERISATION OF KERATINASE FROM A THERMOTOLERANT FEATHER- DEGRADING BACTERIUM Worapot Suntornsuk, Junthip Tongjun, Poranee Onnim, Hiroshi Oyama, Kanok Ratanakanokchai, Thanit Kusamran, Kohei Oda World Journal of Microbiology and Biotechnology, Vol. 21, No. 6-7, October 2005, pp. 1111-1117 23 Isolation and identification of a thermotolerant feather-degrading bacterial strain from Thai soil as well as purification and properties of its keratinase were investigated. The thermotolerant bacterium was identified as Bacillus licheniformis. The keratinase was purified to homogeneity by three-step chromatography. The purified enzyme exhibited a high specific activity (218 U mg -1 ) with 86- fold purification and 25% yield. The enzyme was monomeric and had a molecular mass of 35 kDa. The optimum pH and temperature for the enzyme were 8.5 and 60 °C, respectively. The enzyme activity was significantly inhibited by PMSF and partly inhibited by EDTA and iodoacetamide, but was stimulated by metal ions. It hydrolysed soluble proteins with a relative activity of 4-100% and insoluble proteins, including keratins, with a relative activity of 3-35%. Therefore, the enzyme could improve the nutritional value of meat- and poultry-processing wastes containing keratins, collagen and gelatin. IJ-065 MOLECULAR PROPERTIES OF MEMBRANE-BOUND FAD-CONTAINING D- SORBITOL DEHYDROGENASE FROM THERMOTOLERANT GLUCONOBACTER FRATEURII ISOLATED FROM THAILAND Hirohide Toyama, Wichai Soemphol, Duangtip Moonmangmee, Osao Adachi, Kazunobu Matsushita Bioscience, Biotechnology and Biochemistry, Vol. 69, No. 6, 2005, pp. 1120-1129 There are two types of membrane-bound D-sorbitol dehydrogenase (SLDH) reported: PQQ-SLDH, having pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ), and FAD-SLDH, containing FAD and heme c as the prosthetic groups. FAD-SLDH was purified and characterized from the PQQ- SLDH mutant strain of a thermotolerant Gluconobacter frateurii, having molecular mass of 61.5 kDa, 52 kDa, and 22 kDa. The enzyme properties were quite similar to those of the enzyme from mesophilic G. oxydans IFO 3254. This enzyme was shown to be inducible by D- sorbitol, but not PQQ-SLDH. The oxidation product of FAD-SLDH from D-sorbitol was identified as L-sorbose. The cloned gene of International Journal

24 FAD-SLDH had three open reading frames (sldSLC) corresponding to the small, the large, and cytochrome c subunits of FAD-SLDH respectively. The deduced amino acid sequences showed high identity to those from G. oxydans IFO 3254: SldL showed to other FAD-enzymes, and SldC having three heme c binding motives to cytochrome c subunits of other membranebound dehydrogenases. Faculty of Industrial Education and Technology IJ-066 A STUDY OF A MODEL OF A TRAINING PROGRAMME FOR CLASSROOM RESEARCH IN VOCATIONAL EDUCATION Sumalee Chanchalor, Komson Jirapattarasilp, Mongkol Chaisri World Transactions on Engineering and Technology Education, Vol. 4, No. 2, 2005, pp. 253-256 In this research, the authors sought to determine a model for a training programme for classroom research (CR). This was carried out by a survey, as well as practice. Finally, a training programme of classroom research was developed and implemented. The study by a survey has found that trainees’ attitude was the most important variable in predicting confidence to complete classroom research, then academic atmosphere, researchers’ abilities and outside support. A suitable model of a training programme for CR of personnel then developed in a step-by-step manner with advisors. This began with a workshop on the content, CR planning, experience in undertaking their own CR, and the presentation of their work, respectively. The model of the workshop was to provide information, facilitate group work and utilise presentations, as well as enhance refection skills. The follow up and time management were other important techniques of this model. IJ-067 A STUDY OF THE PRESENT STATUS, MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS AND EXPECTATION CONDITIONS THAT AFFECT THE PEAK DEMAND OF ELECTRICAL ENERGY AT THAI VOCATIONAL EDUCATION INSTITUTES AFFILIATED TO THE OFFICE OF TECHNOLOGY AND VOCATIONAL EDUCATION COMMISSION KMUTT Annual Research Abstracts 2005 Kalayanee Jitgarun, Apichit Therdyothin, Anuvat Tongsakul World Transactions on Engineering and Technology Education, Vol. 4, No. 1, 2005, pp. 125-128 The purposes of this research were to analyse and describe the major factors that affected peak demand electrical energy at vocational education institutes affiliated to the Office of Technology and Vocational Education Commission. The sample chosen for this study were 511 electrical power instructors engaged at vocational education institutes. The instrument used for data collection was a seven-rating scale. The reliability of the instrument calculated by the Cronbach Alpha coefficient was 0.9859. The data was analysed by utilising means (X), Standard Deviation (SD), an analysis of factors by Principal Component Analysis technique (PCA), orthogonal rotation axis using the Varimax method, and the Zone of Tolerance. The results of the study showed that there were five major factors that affected the peak demand of electrical energy as follows: the motor system, the lighting system, the electrical appliance system, the air-conditioning system, and other systems. When the present status, minimum requirements and expectation conditions were compared, it was found that the use of low quality ballasts, such as magnetic ballasts, or general lamp selection, such as nonreflective lamps, and irons left unplugged after use would generate peak demands for electrical energy.
