KMUTT Annual Research Abstracts 2005 Udomsit Sukakanya, Kriengkrai Porkaew International Journal of the Computer, the Internet and Management (IJCIM), Vol. 13, No. SP3, November 2005, pp.13.1-13.8 Classifying the specific e-Business Web content in search results is presently done manually by human who visit a website and then define under which topic headings the web page or site belongs. This is a tedious and expensive process done by many portal websites. Unfortunately, it has become almost impossible for a casual user to look for specific e-Business information without getting lost among huge amounts of mixed data. In particular, retrieval failures arise because of the ambiguity of natural language. Queries are at best imperfect representations of the user's information needs and words chosen by the author are imperfect representations of the information contained in the document. It should come as no surprise that matching query words to document words, which is the heart of any information retrieval system, yields a very imperfect result. Moreover, the distributed nature of the WWW adds new problems to old: documents may be duplicated many times at many different sites; Web pages are added at alarming rates, creating an extremely dynamic information environment; the quality of information contained in Web pages varies greatly; Web pages are deleted or moved frequently, leaving behind dangling references. This paper proposes a framework and a system implementation for automatic e-Business Web content classification in search results, which tries to fill the gaps mentioned above by using present research techniques include study of human retrieval behavior and other information placed inside the html code itself. In order to evaluate the system, two test sets (offline and online) were taken under consideration. For offline testing, we used 7 e- Business Web collection groups from CMU World Wide Knowledge Base, 1250 Web pages for training and 2000 Web pages for testing. For online testing, we used Web collection from the results in search engine for testing. Both of the results show that the average system performance is about 85 %. IJ-122 A GENETIC ALGORITHM FOR THE MULTI-CLASS CONTINGENT BIDDING MODEL Bunthit Watanapa, Anulark Techanitisawad OR Spectrum, Vol. 27, No. 4, August 2005, pp. 525-549 45 This paper proposes a Genetic Algorithm (GA) in searching for a near-optimal sequence of jobs in a make-to-order (MTO) production system in order to maximize the average marginal revenue earned per bid in the bidding model that allows contingent orders. Even though the complexity of the sequencing problem is NP-hard by nature, it is found to be a key determinant in improving the capacity allocation and the expected tardiness cost for an arriving order. The model incorporates operational constraints and marketing policies to effectively reflect the interests of customers. A simulation study was conducted to analyze the relative performance of the proposed system in a finite horizon. The results show the significant impact of the ordering sequence on the average marginal revenue and that the GA is an effective and efficient method to search for a good sequence and can improve the profit margin of the MTO firm and satisfaction of its customers. School of Liberal Arts IJ-123 A FUZZY APPROACH TO DISCOURSE TOPICS Richard Watson Todd Semiotica, Vol. 155, No. 1-4, 2005, pp. 93-123 Discourse-level topics are one of the most elusive and intractable notions in semantics, because they are inherently subjective and because more than one topic may be identifiable for a given stretch of discourse. Despite these characteristics of topics, much previous research into topics has attempted to identify a single topic for a stretch of discourse. In the present study, however, based on fuzzy logic, multiple topics are identified. Using data from an English language classroom at a Thai university, the identification of multiple topics involves, first, using six different approaches to analyse the data: theme-rheme progression, given-new progression, the speech act analysis of Sinclair and Coulthard (1975), Hoey's (1991) lexical analysis, association-based networks of concepts, and topic-based analysis. These methods were then validated through comparison with a control method of analysis, International Journal

46 allowing weightings of importance to be assigned to each of the six approaches. The various topics identified by each approach, taking the weighting of the approach into account, were combined to identify a range of topics with values indicating prominence for each point in the discourse. The extent to which a given point in the discourse is centred on a potential topic was calculated using the concept of fuzzy entropy. Although complex, it is argued that this fuzzy approach to discourse topics provides greater precision in describing and identifying topics. IJ-124 IN AN AEROPLANE, YES, IN AN AEROPLANE : WITHIN-UNIT REPETITIONS IN CLASSROOM DISCOURSE Richard Watson Todd RELC Journal, Vol. 36, No. 2, 2005, pp. 189- 209 This paper looks at the functions of repetition of lexical items which fall within a single T-unit. Examining data from a foundation English course at a Thai university, transcripts of eliciting transactions from 12 lessons were divided into T-units. Within-unit repetitions were identified and categorized. Categories of repetition found, in order of frequency, were emphasis, clarification, affirmation, leftfronting, choral units, re-initiation, and pedagogic reformulation. These functions were found to be related to the discourse move the repetition occurs in and to the type of repetition, but were not related to individual teachers. The findings suggest that within-unit repetition is primarily used to aid students’ comprehension of teacher talk. Pilot Plant Development and Training Institute IJ-125 PV MODULE DYNAMIC IMPEDANCE AND ITS VOLTAGE AND FREQUENCY DEPENDENCIES Dhirayut Chenvidhya, Krissanapong Kirtikara, Chai Jivacate Solar Energy Materials and Solar Cells, Vol. 86, No. 2, 2005, pp. 243-251 The paper presents a derivation of the dynamic impedance of a PV module. At each KMUTT Annual Research Abstracts 2005 bias voltage, the general form of the impedance describes a semicircular locus in the complex impedance plane. Intercepts of each impedance locus yield series, shunt and dynamic resistance of a module. Determinations of the dynamic impedance of a x-Si PV module in the dark with five reverse bias voltages and over a frequency range of 1 Hz to 60 kHz are made. The experimental results validate the derived general form of dynamic impedance. IJ-126 FUNCTIONAL EXPRESSION OF Spirulina-∆ 6 DESATURAGE GENE IN YEAST, Saccharomyces cerevisiae Pavinee Kurdrid, Sanjukta Subudhi, Apiradee Hongsthong, Marasri Ruengjitchatchawalya, Morakot Tanticharoen Molecular Biology Reports, Vol. 32, No. 4, December 2005, pp. 215-226 Spirulina-acyl-lipid desaturases are membrane-bound enzymes found in thylakoid and plasma membranes. These enzymes carry out the fatty acid desaturation process of Spirulina to yield γ-linolenic acid (GLA) as the final desaturation product. In this study, Spirulina-∆ 6 desaturase encoded by the desD gene was heterologously expressed and characterized in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. We then conducted site-directed mutagenesis of the histidine residues in the three histidine boxes to determine the role of these amino acid residues in the enzyme function. Our results showed that while four mutants showed complete loss of ∆ 6 - desaturase activity and two mutants showed only trace of the activity, the enzyme activity could be partially restored by chemical rescue using exogenously provided imidazole. This study reveals that the histidine residues (which have imidazole as their functional group) in the conserved clusters play a critical role in ∆ 6 -- desaturase activity, possibly by providing a diiron catalytic center. In our previous study, this enzyme was expressed in Escherichia coli. The results reveal that the enzyme can function only in the presence of an exogenous cofactor, ferredoxin, provided in vitro. This evidence suggests that baker’s yeast has a cofactor that can complement ferredoxin, thought to act as an electron donor for the ∆ 6 desaturation in cyanobacteria, including Spirulina. The electron donor of the Spirulina-∆ 6 desaturation in yeast is more likely to be cytochrome b 5 , which is absent International Journal
