DUTCH SCHOOLS ON THE MOVE Back ground — What makes the Dutch Education system different? Dutch schools are given a high level of autonomy. There is no prescriptive National Curriculum. School leaders are recognised for their professional expertise and are trusted to customise student experiences to meet their individual needs. Schools however are challenged to meet rigorous national standards identifi ed by the government and monitored by a National Inspectorate. The Dutch constitution also provides for groups or consortia to set up and start their own schools. The Dutch Education system is made up of a range of institutions using a wide variety of pedagogical approaches from traditional models of learning to highly individualised curricula requiring autonomous, independent learning. All schools are challenged to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed by young people in the 21stcentury. ■ More information For more information about the study visit, the program the venue and the cost please visit www.dutchschools onthemove.nl ESHA MAGAZINE APRIL 2012 33
