Since 1993, Judge Humrickhouse has been certifi ed as a Business Bankruptcy Specialist by the ABC. Challenges are nothing new to Stephani Humrickhouse, North Carolina’s recently appointed bankruptcy judge. Born in Monticello, N.Y., she was the first in her immediate family to finish college. At times taking more than 20 hours a semester, she graduated from Cornell University in three years — to save money. She came to the University of North Carolina School of Law, sight unseen, on the recommendation of a counselor at Cornell who considered it one of the best legal educations in the country for the money. She met friends in Chapel Hill, secured a job with a local firm, which merged into the much larger and better paying Hunton & Williams, and ended up in Raleigh. Most of her 29 years as a lawyer were spent with Nicholls & Crampton, PA, a small boutique business bankruptcy firm. Among her partners for more than six years was Elizabeth Anania Edwards, whom Humrickhouse describes as “brilliant and a very capable lawyer.” The two have another thing in common – they are breast cancer survivors. Humrickhouse’s cancer was discovered in 2002, and she practiced law throughout her cancer treatment. “Working helped me focus on something other than my health,” she says. But, what are her challenges now? Filling the shoes of long tenured Bankruptcy Judge A. Thomas Small and presiding over consumer cases are no easy tasks. A past-lecturer at Commercial Law League conferences, the 2005 recipient of the CLLA’s Lawrence P. King Award for Excellence in the Field of Bankruptcy and a former president of the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges, Small held court for 27 years. “While I may do some things differently than Judge Small, it would be impossible to not feel his influence in this courthouse,” Humrickhouse says. “I’d like to think that I am a good listener and that I take time to explain tough legal results, just as he did.” Her immediate caseload poses another challenge. Comfortable with complex Chapter 11s, Humrickhouse’s initial assignments have her learning the finer points of consumer cases. And she has enjoyed every minute. What does she like the most about being a judge? Not billing her time! And with law clerks and courthouse personnel assisting her preparation for court, she feels a marked reduction from the stress of private practice. Humrickhouse lives in Raleigh with Scott, her husband of 27 years. Their son, John, is a recent graduate of UNC and is currently seeking admission to medical school. By Bettie Kelley Sousa, president elect of the ABC and a Raleigh lawyer who has known Judge Humrickhouse since 1981. Debt 3 March/April 2010 21
