50 Years of the Nuclear Power Industry in Focus Studsvik’s Mission Studsvik is a high-tech company, focusing on the nuclear power industry and nuclear medicine. Business is conducted through four Strategic Business Units (SBUs): Nuclear Technology, Waste & Decommissioning, Industrial Services and Nuclear Medicine as well as through the unit, Other Business. By marketing products and services with a high technical content, Studsvik’s aim is to contribute to the efficient operation and enhanced safety of customers’ nuclear facilities as well as to provide safe and cost-effective waste management. Studsvik sees nuclear medicine as providing significant opportunities for further application of its state-of-the-art nuclear expertise. Studsvik’s experience and know-how from the nuclear sector will also be applied to the marketing of products and services for non-nuclear customers with high safety and environmental demands. Studsvik AB has its roots in the company, AB Atomenergi, which was formed in 1947 to develop, design, construct and operate nuclear facilities in Sweden. 1950’s Operations were established at Studsvik, situated outside Nyköping, where a number of laboratories and different types of experimental reactors were constructed. 1960’s Studsvik’s R2 and R2-0 reactors were taken into operation in 1960. In 1969, ASEA-Atom – which was jointly owned by the Swedish state and ASEA – took over AB Atomenergi’s resources for fuel fabrication and nuclear reactor design. 1970’s During the 1970’s the Swedish state gradually reduced its grants to AB Atomenergi, with the aim of letting the industry assume a part of the funding of operations. In view of this, AB Atomenergi decided to commercialize its activities. Operations also expanded to international markets. AB Atomenergi changed its name to Studsvik Energiteknik AB. 1980’s During the early 1980’s, the commercialization of operations continued and the company was re-organized into a nuclear and non-nuclear energy division. Sales companies were established in the USA and Japan. However, the non-nuclear energy division showed a low level of profitability. In order to strengthen Studsvik’s profitability, a comprehensive restructuring program was launched in the late 1980’s and the state transferred its shares in Studsvik to Vattenfall. Underperforming operations which were not nuclear-related were either sold or closed down. 1990’s Studsvik is situated outside Nyköping, about 100 km south of Stockholm. Apart from Studsvik AB and subsidiaries, Vattenfall Fastigheter AB, TPS Termiska Processer AB, AB SVAFO and KSU Kärnkraftsäkerhet och Utbildning AB are also located at the Studsvik site. During the 1990’s, Studsvik AB has focused on nuclear and nuclear-related services. Up to December 1997, Vattenfall gradually disposed of its shareholding in Studsvik AB. At year-end 1998, 63.3 per cent of the company was owned by Atle and 36.7 per cent was owned by Euroventures. 3
