Environmental Report 1998

Environmental Policy and Environmental Organization Studsvik AB’s Environmental Policy • We shall use the best available technique which is economically justifiable to minimize the environmental impact of our activities. • We shall, in our management systems for quality, occupational safety and health and environment, systematically use objectives and plans of action to guide and develop work. • We shall set a good example within the environmental area. • Openness and good communication with the local community, regulatory and supervisory authorities, customers, the mass media, employees and other stakeholders is one of the cornerstones of our environmental work. • Our belief is that it always pays to invest in the environment. Environmental Work Integrated with Business Operations Studsvik AB’s environmental policy has been established by the Chief Executive Officer of the Studsvik Group. Individual subsidiaries have also formulated company-specific environmental policies when this has been considered necessary. The parent company’s environmental policy, together with the subsidiaries’ policies, are the guiding light of Studsvik’s environmental work. Studsvik’s operational organization is the same as Studsvik’s environmental organization since the environmental work is integrated into business operations. The environmental work is a natural part of day-to-day work and the operational managers are also responsible for environmental work. Key Individuals – Environment The Chief Executive Officer and the presidents of the Studsvik subsidiaries have appointed environmental co-ordinators and environmental managers who manage environmental work at different levels within the organization. These key individuals have developed a system of co-operation between the Studsvik companies. Environmental Management Based on ISO 14001 The Swedish nuclear power companies made environmental demands on their suppliers at an early stage. This is a major contributing factor to the establishment of environmental management systems within those activities in Sweden that are conducted by the Studsvik Group. The environmental management systems have been adapted to the requirements of the ISO 14001 international standard. This standard was primarily selected since it can be used to advantage with the ISO 9001 quality assurance standard, which is already in place in the Studsvik Group. Certification No later than by the year 2000, all of the companies shall have certified environmental management systems. Supplier Requirements In the same way that the Swedish nuclear power plants make environmental demands on the Studsvik companies as suppliers, the Studsvik companies make environmental demands on their suppliers and on the products of their suppliers. For example, when new facilities are constructed, heat recovery requirements must be met. Procurement at Studsvik is co-ordinated by a purchaser who is trained to conduct environmental audits at suppliers. Internal Environmental Audits Within the Studsvik Group, internal audits are regularly conducted. The audits are one example of the control work carried out by the Group. Other forms of control include follow-up audits by the Integria certification company, customer audits, regulatory inspections and safety committee assessments. Environmental Objectives Environmental objectives are formulated by the companies within the Group in the aim of reducing environmental impact. Examples of completed, ongoing and planned work to reduce the environmental impact of the activities conducted at Studsvik are provided on the next page. 9
