JULY

JULY 2008 Aidan O’Brien’s remarkable run of form in Group 1 races continued when he sent out Mount Nelson to prevail narrowly in the Coral Eclipse Stakes at Sandown under Johnny Murtagh, giving O’Brien his 12th win at the highest level of the season. The following week, Moonstone completed a 1-2 for the yard in the Darley Irish Oaks, with just a short-head separating Johnny Murtagh’s mount and the unfancied Ice Queen. On that same card, David Wachman and Wayne Lordan were in double form, teaming up with Bushranger to win in the Dubai Duty Free Anglesey Stakes (Group 3) impressively and Navajo Moon to launch the Kilboy Estate Stakes (listed). Not for the first time, Dermot Weld and Pat Smullen were the men in form at Leopardstown in mid-July, completing a treble which included the two big races on the card. The Silver Flash Stakes (Group 3) saw a promising winning performance from Luminous Eyes and the Challenge AS IF O’BRIEN HAD NOT ALREADY DONE ENOUGH IN THE MONTH OF JULY, HE CLOSED OUT THE MONTH WITH A FLURRY OF GROUP 1 WINS Stakes (listed) was turned into a procession by Profound Beauty. Tipperary stages some of the best mixed cards of the season and their mid-July meeting was an example of such a meeting, with the featured Kevin McManus Bookmaker Grimes Hurdle (Grade 3) being won by the Eric McNamara-trained Larkwing under Barry Geraghty. Away from the big race, Johnny Murtagh was without doubt the star performer, riding a treble which included two wins for Aidan O’Brien. The Galway Festival is well established as the first major meeting of the National Hunt season and 2008 was no different. In common with the Punchestown Festival, Paul Nicholls managed to steal one of the feature events of the meeting away to Britain, sending out Oslot to win the William Hill Galway Plate under Ruby Walsh. The following day, the Guinness Galway Hurdle was won by the John Kiely-trained Indian Pace under the promising Paul Townend. As always, Dermot Weld was a dominant force at the meeting, claiming a total of 10 wins between both codes with the highlight coming when saddling Majestic Concorde to win the GPT Galway Handicap on the opening day of the meeting. As if O’Brien had not already done enough in the month of July, he closed out the month with a fl urry of Group 1 wins. The first of the wins came when he saddled the admirably tough Duke Of Marmalade to win the King George VI Stakes at Ascot, getting the better of a titanic duel with Papal Bull. He then sent out Mastercraftsman to win the Independent Waterford Wedgewood Phoenix Stakes back at the Curragh and while the Galway Festival was in full flow, Henrythenavigator gained yet another win at the highest level when prevailing in the BGC Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood. 16 FACTBOOK 2008
