GEN-SETS Gen-sets

GEN-SETS Gen-sets fuelled by biogas - more popular than ever Originally developed by Finning in association with Caterpillar the Cat G3520C Biogas Engine is now a widely-used, iconic gen-set which is popular in the power generation sector. WIP has the story on the engine which can run on on landfill gas, digester gas and even coal mine methane. Following its sustained success in the biogas market with the Caterpillar G3516 generator set, Finning recognised a growing trend for larger equipment. Market research showed that a single machine which could generate in the order of 2000 kW of electricity would be welcomed by users, says the company. At the time, the existing 16-cylinder machine had grown in output over the years from around 700kWe to1150kWe in its most recent form, but it was realised that a further increase to 2000kWe would not be possible. At the time Caterpillar had recently launched the G3520 natural gas product, but there were no short term plans to offer this in a biogas configuration. Thanks to Finning the first prototype engines were initiated in 2003 and still run to this day, having each completed over 45,000 hours, reports the company. The engine has been very popular with customers showing substantial efficiency savings over its predecessor and has been proved on landfill gas, digester gas and coal mine methane. The gen-set includes The G3520C fuelled by landfill gas. equipment which optimises the performance of engines in parallel-togrid, continuous-operation applications that use corrosive, low-energy gases. The G3520C 50 Hz Low Energy Fuel Package Generator Set offers several design features to extend engine life while maximising performance, including stainless-steel, corrosion-resistant aftercooler cores, 110° C jacket water outlet temperature and crankcase air cleaners. An optional positive-crankcase ventilation system is also available with this package. Equipped with a Gas Engine Control Module, using ADEMTM III electronic controls, the G3520C 50 Hz Low Energy Fuel Package Generator Set allows for full engine control from a single source. The advanced Air/Fuel Ratio Control is designed for use without an oxygen sensor, allowing as high as a 19.2 bar BMEP rating that supplies high power density while meeting NOx emission levels of 500 mg/NM3. An optional level of 250 mg/NM3 is also available through a 54°C separate circuit aftercooler (SCAC) system that can be used with a conventional cooling system arrangement in almost all geographic locations. The Cat® G3520C 50 Hz Low Energy Fuel Package Generator Set operates at 1500 rpm with a continuous rating of 1966 ekW, reports Finning.
