CONTROLS Controls for

CONTROLS Controls for China’s latest power transmission systems A US$120m deal in China means that control systems and power transmission equipment will be designed in close co-operation with SGCC and local partners. ABB is supplying key components for converter stations, including converter valves and control & protection systems. ABB has also been selected to supply the 800 kilovolt (kV) UHVDC transformers for both converter stations. The 2,090 km power link will transport clean hydropower from Sichuan province in central-western China to the highly industrialized coastal area in the eastern province of Jiangsu. The UHVDC link will have a rated capacity of 7,200 megawatts and is expected to be energised in 2013. “The Jinping-Sunan project reflects the continued confidence of SGCC in ABB’s technologies and globally proven domain expertise in HVDC,” Peter Leupp, head of ABB’s Power Systems division, tells WIP. “We have a long track record in China and are pleased to continue supporting the country in its efforts to strengthen the national power infrastructure and minimize environmental impact.” UHVDC is a technological development of HVDC, pioneered by ABB more than 50 years ago, and is the biggest leap in transmission capacity and efficiency in more than 20 years. Power transmission at ultrahigh voltage levels has considerable advantages for the environment as it enables more efficient use of renewable energy sources and ABB HVDC) cable. reduces dependency on fossil fuels. It also minimizes power losses and requires a smaller transmission corridor than conventional technologies. It is particularly suitable for large countries like China and India, where centers of high power consumption are often located far from the energy sources. SGCC is the country’s leading power utility responsible for the construction and operation of a vast power network that covers 26 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities across a service area that represents 88% of the country. In April 2011 ABB also won an order worth about US$165 million from State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) to supply 800 kilovolt UHVDC (ultrahigh voltage direct current) transformers for both converter stations of the new Jinping-Sunan ultrahigh-voltage transmission system. The converter transformers will facilitate the efficient and reliable flow of power across a new UHVDC link that will transmit hydropower from Yalong river in Sichuan province to the highly populated Jiangsu province located on the east coast of China. By using the highest available direct current voltage levels, it will be possible to transmit 7,200 megawatts of electricity across more than 2,000 km. The transmission link is scheduled to be fully operational by in 2013, says SGCC. “The 800 kV UHVDC transformers are key components of ultrahigh-voltage power links that deliver large amounts of electricity over very long distances and help integrate environmentally friendly renewable energies. “There are many challenges involved in building them, for example, increasing the technical specifications of the insulation and redesigning critical components like bushings,” concludes Bernhard Jucker, head of ABB’s Power Products division, in an interview with WIP. “The ongoing cooperation between ABB and SGCC has played a key role in this success.” WIP Internet link www.abb.com ABB has won an order worth US$165 million from State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) to supply 800 kilovolt UHVDC (ultrahigh voltage direct current) transformers. 30 A UGUST 2011 • WORLDWIDE I NDEPENDENT P OWER
