GENERATORS Llowlab stage

GENERATORS Llowlab stage runs on new clean energy from Clear Concept Llowlab, the floating stage of the 2011 Lowlands Festival, held on August 19th-21st, used Clear Concept, a Bredenoord generator, to provide its energy supplies. This generator runs on cleaner synthetic diesel and has a soot filter which eliminates 99.9% of emissions. This year the Lowlands Festival - one of the biggest and most popular music festivals in the Netherlands, with about 55,000 visitors and over 200 acts - featured an innovative generator powering its floating Llowlab stage. A new concept from Bredenoord, based in Apeldoorn, The Netherlands, the generator is designed to run on cleaner synthetic diesel and has a soot filter which eliminates 99.9% of soot emissions. As part of the ‘Fit for the future’ programme the Lowlands visitors had the opportunity to test themselves on their level of readiness for a sustainable future. Amongst others, foods of the future, construction techniques of the future and low-energy solutions could be seen and tried-out. Some clever technical inventions still require years of finetuning, however others are surprisingly tangible or even already fully deployable. The Bredenoord Clear Concept is one of these inventions. Because of the combination of Gas-To- Liquid (GTL) diesel and a patented soot filter on the existing generators, this approach to energy provision can already be deployed on a large scale, for example at events. The Lowlands visitors were surprised to find out that this solution was already in use and provided all the sustainable energy for Llowlab. One comment was: “I never knew that The Clear Concept generator from Bredenoord. Visitors to Llowlab at the Lowlands Festival. The stage [pic: below right] was powered by the Bredenoord Clear Air generator running on GTL diesel. diesel did not have to be fossil. Really amazing that this is possible!” No wonder that the Clear Concept has a flying start: in addition to Lowlands it was deployed at the Parade in Rotterdam and at Oerol earlier this year. The synthetic GTL-diesel in the Clear Concept has its origins in the flare gas from the petrochemical industry. The GTL-diesel is biologically-degradable and does not contain aromatics and any sulphur-linked compounds, which means there are fewer harmful emissions. In the future, instead of gas from biomass or other waste being destined to be burned off as flare gas, it can be used as a basis for synthetic diesel. This ‘green’ reuse of materials means even less of a negative impact on the environment. The Marketing Manager for Bredenoord, Margien Storm van Leeuwen, comments: “Bredenoord is the first rental company to offer gensets running on GTL diesel on a large scale. In combination with our unique Clear Air soot filter we offer a cleaner generator which is deployable at every level. In this way we provide our customers with the choice: from advanced techniques such as biogas fuel cells, hybrid systems, to this type of practical solution for existing generators.” Bredenoord is a market leader in providing energy in permanent, temporary or mobile formats. Today, the company continues to develop and build its own generators and works continuously to improve its products and solutions, always with an open eye for sociallyresponsible entrepreneurship. CONTRACTS & APPLICATIONS AICUP contract until 2018 Constellation Energy, a US-bvased supplier of power, natural gas and energy products and services, has announced that the US Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, or AICUP, has extended its current contract with Constellation through December 31, 2018. The agreement represents a five-year extension of Constellation's existing contracts to serve as an electricity supplier to the approximately 87 US educational institutions, says the company. US$133.9m for Abengoa Abengoa Bioenergy, a unit of Abengoa, received a US$133.9m loan guarantee from the U.S. Department of Energy to support construction of a commercial scale biorefinery in Kansas, USA, to produce renewable fuel from plant fibre or cellulosic biomass. The DOE supported construction of the pilot plant in Nebraska with a US$34 million cost matching award, then signed a co-operative agreement in 2007 to provide up to $100m. Contract fulfilled Both offshore substations have been successfully installed at the 630MW first phase of the London Array, according to the developers behind what will become the world’s largest offshore wind farm next year. The substations, which were built on 3 levels and weight more than 1,260 tonnes apiece, were designed, made and installed by Future Energy. Active Power wins US$2m Texas-based contract for 2 PowerHouse units for HP Active Power, a leading manufacturer of continuous power and infrastructure solutions, has received an order from HP for two containerised continuous power systems which will be deployed to support the HP POD 240a at a datacentre facility in Texas, USA. The two PowerHouseTM systems are part of a complete modular datacenter and infrastructure deployment and one of the most innovative and efficient IT solution packages available on the market today. By the end of 2011 both systems will be shipped. The two PowerHouse systems, valued at nearly US$2m are each rated at 960 kW and will contain Active Power’s high efficiency flywheel based CleanSource® UPS system; switchgear; and monitoring and controls software. These systems will provide power conditioning and protection to the HP POD 240a, said by the company to be the world’s most energy efficient modular datacenter, housing servers, storage, networking equipment, and other resources. “The PowerHouse solution enables datacenter customers to support IT capacity at very high efficiencies which result in significant energy savings,” Martin Olsen, vice president and general manager at Active Power, tells WIP. “We’re also able to deploy critical power infrastructure onsite in a matter of months compared to a conventional build which could take up to a year or more. This is due to the fact PowerHouse is factory built and tested prior to deployment to the site similar to the HP POD 240a.” Founded in 1992, Active Power designs and manufactures continuous power solutions and critical backup power systems which enable datacentres and other mission critical operations to remain ‘on’ 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week. Active Power solutions are intelligently efficient, inherently reliable and economically green, providing environmental benefits and energy and space efficiencies to customers’ financial benefit. The company’s products and solutions are built in Austin, Texas, at a state-of-the-art, ISO 9001:2008 registered manufacturing and test facility.
