NEWS In brief... Tenesol

NEWS In brief... Tenesol gets MCS approval Tenesol has received Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) approval. The company’s advanced PV modules, which are manufactured in Europe, and installation services exceeded the required quality standards and can now be used in the UK market. Quality is a major focus for Tenesol. The company’s advanced production facility boasts some industry-leading capabilities including the only Electroluminescence machine in France and Tenesol’s unique 52 stage panel checking process (considerably more than the standard 10 stage check). Tenesol established a UK subsidiary at the start of 2011. Sheringham Shoal produces power The first turbine has been successfully installed and commissioned at the Sheringham Shoal Offshore Wind Farm. On August 2nd Sheringham started producing electricity for the UK grid. “This heralds the start of operations and is an important milestone for Scira Offshore Energy, the owner and operator of the wind farm currently being constructed off the North Norfolk coast,” said Einar Strømsvåg, General Manager for Scira. Speedy in £3.6m deal with SDMO Energy Speedy - the UK’s leading provider of equipment rental and support services – has invested £3.6 million in a fleet of new generators from SDMO Energy. More than 200 power generation products have been purchased and will be distributed across Speedy’s depot network. The investment gives Speedy the largest fleet of generators that comply with EU stage 3A omissions in the UK. Speedy’s power generation experts visited the SDMO manufacturing factory and worked closely with the production team to ensure the equipment met customer requirements. The new generators – which range in size from 80-500kVA – are more fuel efficient and cost effective for users and each features an external control panel to improve safety and accuracy. The fuel tanks are fully bunded with leakage detection and all sizes are easy to manoeuvre as they have been fitted with fork lift pockets and crane lifting pegs. Andy Connor, supply chain director at Speedy, told WIP: “Generators are essential in construction projects but with rising fuel costs and increasing environmental concerns they can be expensive to operate. “Our customers need more fuel efficient units so we teamed up with SDMO to develop these state-of-the-art generators which are compliant with our sustainability strategy, One Plan. “Through this action plan we are helping contractors reduce carbon emissions, increase efficiency and improve health safety by supplying them with new products, fuel management and sustainability consultancy.” Founded in 1977, Speedy is a leading UK provider of equipment rental and support services to a wide range of clients across the construction, infrastructure, industrial, manufacturing and facilities management sectors - as well as to local industry. Power from whisky waste drives LEAF Nissan’s 100% electric LEAF has provided the crucial last element in an innovative business owner’s attempts to become entirely self-sufficient on the remote Hebridean island of Islay. The award-winning 130-year old Bruichladdich whisky distillery has established a pioneering Biowayste system allowing it to generate its own electricity by using the waste products from the distilling process. Business owner, Mark Reynier, started using the system, in which electricity is generated by biogas formed by a process called anaerobic digestion, earlier this year. Now he has also taken delivery of a Nissan LEAF, the reigning European and World Car of the Year, meaning that he can also drive completely carbon-free, charging his car using the electricity produced by the distillery. To celebrate the role played by the LEAF, Nissan and Bruichladdich have produced a limited run of bespoke, LEAF-labelled organic whisky. The Bruichladdich whisky distillery has long been a source of innovation. Built in 1881 by three pioneering brothers, its arrival first brought electricity to the 230 squaremile island. Its ingenious Victorian design means that the same machinery is still used to this day to make whisky. Today, the distillery’s waste streams are all ploughed back into powering and producing for the business. Mark Reynier tells WIP: “With the addition of the LEAF, we’re happy in the knowledge that we’re doing everything we can to be environmentally sympathetic.” 8 A UGUST 2011 • WORLDWIDE I NDEPENDENT P OWER
