Kaley Bass Makes A

Kaley Bass Makes A Strong NFR Push on the Prairie By Tanya Randall Davenport, Florida, barrel racer Kaley Bass put herself in prime contention for her first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo berth with an exceptional weekend on the prairie, winning the Dodge City Roundup, Wild Bill Hickok Rodeo in Abilene, and Iowa’s Championship Rodeo in Sidney. Bass also placed fourth at the Jayhawker Roundup Rodeo in Hill City, Kansas, and third at Kansas’ Biggest Rodeo in Phillipsburg. All totaled Bass pocketed $12,883. “I cannot complain,” said Bass, who is sponsored by Se’Belle Dymmek’s S-Belle Brand, Justin Boots and Triple Crown Feeds. “I was really happy with the way that he worked with it being as hot as it has been down here. We’ve been in the northern area where isn’t so hot. He’s been handling it very good and he’s in tip-top shape right now.” Bass started her week in Hill City and Abilene before making her first two runs in Dodge City. She headed to Phillipsburg and then Sidney, where she gave Wonders Cowboy Dan a break by climbing on his younger full-sister Girl Pal Wonder. Afterward it was back to Dodge City for the short go. At Dodge City, Bass and Dan, a 12-year-old gray gelding by Wonders Pal out of Jackies Cowgirl Bar, by Cowboy Dans Bar, won the first go and earned the right to compete in that’s night performance. She left the rodeo knowing she would back on Sunday. “My first run I made was just good and consistent,” she said. “I knew it was safe and would make it back. My horse gets faster with every run so I knew he was just going to get faster and faster. With all the other rodeos I went to this week, I knew he was going to come back strong for the short go.” Hayden Segelke had the average lead going into the short, so Bass knew she couldn’t let up. “I knew I needed to be fast again,” she said, “and I was confident because I knew he gets faster. I had no worries going into the short go. I was pretty excited because my week wasn’t over yet.” Wonder Otoe Wonders Pal Ole Blondy Belle Wonders Cowboy Dan 2000 Gray Gelding Otoe si 95 Marrs Bar Cowboy Dans Bar Aggiette Jackies Cowgirl Bar Millionaire tb Jackie Million tb Angry Jackie Bass and Dan turned in the fastest time of the rodeo, a 16.87, en route to the championship for their biggest paycheck of the week, $7,355 at the $15,193-added rodeo. Incidentally, Bass and “Girl” turned in the fastest time of last year’s rodeo in the second round. Both horses were working tough, but Dan was doing his best to scare Bass with his paint-peeling turns. She thought she was going to knock at Abilene, Phillipsburg and Dodge City. “At Abilene, I thought I hit the second barrel,” said Bass. “I did everything that I could to get around that barrel. I had a couple of runs like that this week. I had a run at Phillipsburg like that too.” Bass said Dan wasn’t hitting the barrels, but was brushing them enough to scare her. “He’s the most honest horse I could possibly get on,” she said.. He doesn’t want to hit a barrel. That’s how he is. He knows.” She credits Dymmek with providing her with the horses that have given the opportunity to rodeo for the WNFR. “She’s a big help,” said Bass. “These horses came from her. To be able to come out to these rodeos with two horses like that. . . . Not just one is good, they both are.” Bass will head to Sikeston, Mo., on Tuesday before heading to Lawton, Okla., and Lovington, N.M. After melting on the Kansas prairie, Bass is looking forward to the next leg of her WNFR journey, “We go back to the Northwest from there, back to the cooler weather!” Dodge City Round-Up Aug 1-5, 2012, Dodge City, KS Average on three: 1 Wonders Cowboy Dan, Kaley Bass, 51.03, $2,894 00 gr. g.
