The problem • Severe malaria is a medical emergency. • It causes an estimated 596,000 child deaths in Africa causing challenge in achievement of MDGs 4 and 6. • Quinine which has been the standard treatment has recently been replaced by Artesunate. • We present a summary of evidence supporting the policy change.
