Provide an example of something similar from your own life. When you begin to write your response, be sure to include the book’s title and the author’s name. 2. ENTERING 7TH GRADERS Realistic Fiction Hoot – Carl Hiaasen NEWBERY MEDAL WINNER Unfortunately, Roy's first acquaintance in Florida is Dana Matherson, a well-known bully. Then again, if Dana hadn't been sinking his thumbs into Roy's temples and mashing his face against the school-bus window, Roy might never have spotted the running boy. And the running boy is intriguing: he was running away from the school bus, carried no books, and -- here's the odd part -- wore no shoes. Sensing a mystery, Roy sets himself on the boy's trail. The chase introduces him to potty-trained alligators, a fake-fart champion, some burrowing owls, a renegade ecoavenger, and several extremely poisonous snakes with unnaturally sparkling tails. Voice on the Radio – Caroline B. Cooney Janie is a high-school junior and in love with Reeve. She finally feels that her life is somewhat normal and begins to reconcile with her biological family, but the voice on the radio destroys her trust. Cooney plots an engaging and realistic picture of betrayal, commitment, unconditional love, and forgiveness. Readers will not put the book down until they have seen how Janie comes to terms with those she has hurt, and with those who have hurt her. A Corner of the Universe by Ann M. Martin Watching home movies, Hattie looks back over the summer of 1960 and the events that changed her perception of life. The 12-year-old has difficulty making friends her own age, but enjoys the company of an elderly boarder, the friendly cook, and her artist father. Suddenly, an uncle whom Hattie has never heard of comes to live with her grandparents Hattie comes to appreciate his affection for her, his exuberance for life, and his courage in facing society's rejection. Martin delivers wonderfully real characters and an engrossing plot through the viewpoint of a girl who tries so earnestly to connect with those around her. Surviving the Applewhites by Stephanie Tolan In this laugh-out-loud novel, a young teen on the fast track to the juvenile detention center suddenly finds himself living in rural North Carolina with the outrageously eccentric Applewhite clan. Jake Semple, 13, has been expelled from a long line of schools before coming to the Applewhites to be homeschooled. Running beneath the narrative that gently pokes fun at everything from sculpture to TV documentaries, though, is also the story of a boy allowing himself to belong and begin to discover his own potential. Ender’s Game – Orson Scott Card Sci-Fi/Fantasy HUGO AWARD WINNER, NEBULAR AWARD WINNER Once again, the Earth is under attack. Alien "buggers" are poised for a final assault. The survival of the human species depends on a military genius who can defeat the buggers. But who? Ender 4
