She enjoys visiting The Gardens with her son when they are in Birmingham to see family or shop. Amy first started bringing her son to The Gardens to allow him to release some of his energy after the hour drive into Birmingham. Amy and her son both love walking through The Gardens, each with camera in hand, to photograph the ever changing beauty. Since beginning their visits to The Gardens her son has become such a lover of flowers and plants. Amy captured her son jumping over a rock in the Japanese Gardens on a beautiful Spring day in early April. This photo is one of her favorites from her visits to The Gardens because it captures her son’s energetic personality. It isn’t too late to submit your own photograph to be considered for an upcoming issue. Dear Friends: Our mission of educating people about plants, gardens and the environment lies at the core of the 2010 Master Plan for Birmingham Botanical Gardens, which was unveiled on 25 March, and can be viewed at www.bbgardens. org/masterplan. The plan is visitororiented, providing greater accessibility and increasing our capacity for events, activities and teaching. It solves stormwater problems with ecological restoration, making more places to conserve, display and teach about Alabama’s remarkable native plant diversity. It also emphasizes “the global garden” by adding an important chapter in garden design history and expanding food crop production. Finally, it points the way to greater sustainability as green technologies replace an aging and inefficient infrastructure. The plan’s completion signifies “the end of the beginning” of the process and will soon be followed by cost estimations and strategic planning to prioritize what elements of the plan will be tackled in what order and when. In a broad sense, The Gardens’ current form has taken nearly 50 years and three master plans to evolve. Just as trees take time to mature, the 2010 master plan—which builds on the past—will take some time to realize. We believe that this measured approach is to our benefit. I’ll close by thanking all of our generous volunteers, partnering organizations and skilled staff for their efforts in helping stage the Spencer Lecture, Spring Plant Sale and Earth Day at The Gardens. We owe our success to all of you, as well as the thousands of patrons, customers and visitors who partake of our numerous program offerings.
