I recently attended an AMPHS Conference with current Gateway participants, and the program is still producing top-notch students who will undoubtedly change this world for the better. Nicholas Calder Science Skills, Class of 2006 Cornell, Class of 2010 Gateway Student Presents at AMHPS In March, 2008, 20 students from eight Gateway programs and schools and three Gateway alumni headed to New Orleans to attend the 22nd Annual Symposium on Career Opportunities in Biomedical Sciences and Health Professions. Sponsored by the Association of Minority Health Professions Schools (AMHPS), the event was hosted by Xavier University of Louisiana. Brooklyn Tech junior Amika McBurnie was one of 24 high school students and 39 college students from a pool of approximately 200 submissions chosen to present at the conference. Her topic was “The Influence of Preventive Healthcare Visits and STD Transmission Among Young Amika McBurnie Brooklyn Tech, Class of 2009 Teenagers.” A Shippy Scholar, Amika will be taking part in the Brooklyn Summer H.E.A.T. (Help Employ Ambitious Teens), where she hopes to work in a medical setting. Amika was not the only Gateway student at Brooklyn Tech to go public. Senior Janelle Lambert was a contestant in the Jeopardy 2008 Teen Tournament, where she competed in the quarter finals. She will be attending Harvard University in the fall with the goal of becoming a radiologist. Can You Spell Success? Jamaica senior Delroy Waugh has a lot to celebrate this year. Not only did he earn a $20,000 scholarship from the Coca Cola Scholars Foundation to supplement the full scholarship he received to attend Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, but he was also in the top 98 out of 13,000 students who competed in the New York Citywide Vocabulary Championship—part of the National Vocabulary Championship. Congratulations also go to classmate Jermaine Wright who earned a prestigious New York Lottery Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarship to attend SUNY Albany. Continuing a long tradition of academic excellence, Gateway students achieved the top honors among Jamaica High School seniors, including Valedictorian Afnan Haq, who will attend New York Institute of Technology, Salutatorian Harmandeep Singh, who will attend Queens College, and Alex Dasrath, a LEDA Scholar, who will attend New York University. Lehman Keeps Pace This year, approximately 200 students in grades 9 - 11 comprised the Gateway program, whose first graduates will be the Class of 2009. While many students were busy with AP classes in calculus and English, Gateway junior Ariel Harris was selected to spend three weeks in Israel as part of a highly selective cultural exchange program sponsored by the high school. 8

The Gateway program encourages students to pursue their dreams by offering us internships, workshops and participation in numerous programs. Gateway was also instrumental in making me a Gates Millennium Scholar. Roslyn Joinvil Erasmus Hall, Class of 2006 Sophie Davis P.A. Program, Class of 2010 Posse at Port Richmond Senior Rebekah Lafontant has had a busy four years in the Gateway program at Port Richmond culminating in the award of a $100,000 Posse Foundation grant to attend Brandeis University in the fall. The Posse Foundation identifies, recruits, and trains youth leaders from urban public high schools and sends these groups as "Posses" to top colleges and Rebekah Lafontant Port Richmond, Class of 2008 universities. Last summer, she was chosen as a LEDA Scholar and has been an active member of the Gateway community. A profile she wrote about fellow Gateway classmate Maoly Gomez was published in the Staten Island Advance in May, 2008. Science Skills Star Senior and class valedictorian Tashzna Jones was the top ranking student when she entered the Gateway program at Science Skills Center in 2004, and graduates with a stellar GPA of 97. Tashzna received a scholarship to attend Dartmouth College this fall where she will major in Biology. She has won numerous awards such as the Principal’s Honor Roll, National Scholars Society and participated in many extracurricular activities such as pediatric volunteer at Bellevue Hopital and a senior judge at the Science Skills Center HS Science Fair. Teaming with Talent at BREC This year, Gateway students at Bayard Rustin Educational Complex demonstrated their academic leadership representing five out of the top 10 spots for graduating seniors including Salutatorian Eric Joseph, Jankiara Vargas, Marleny Cabral, Daniel Hernandez, Rukma Dhakal. Other academic highlights include: Freshman Maurice Dunn will be attending the first of three consecutive tuition-free summers at the highly-competitive MS 2 program at Phillips Academy in Andover, Mass. A math team consisting of three Gateway seniors--Shawn Maclorrian, Daniel Hernandez, and Rukma Dhakal—finished fifth in fall 2007 and fourth in spring 2008 in the Senior B division of the New York City Interscholastic Math competition. A team of four Gateway students—Miguel Munoz, Struilanny Paulino, Shenaid Alexis Charlie, and Tommy Zhou—finished in first place in the New York City Stock Market Game Program. Students Chris Vargas and John Kim were members of the team which garnered third place honors. 9
