September 2012 New Year

September 2012 New Year of Adult Formation Begins September 9! This spring, we asked for your input regarding Adult Formation, and a large number of you responded. Thanks so much to all of you who took the time to fill out the survey! Besides giving us a good idea of what kinds of topics interest you, the results made it clear that you would like to have more discussion and interaction, as well as hear more from more fellow parishioners. And that has driven our agenda for this fall. For instance, our first two sessions, September 9 and 16, will be discussions led by George Smith and Elizabeth Molitors on questions of sexuality. On September 23, Dianne Dinse and Bruce Clements will lead a discussion on grandparenting. We’ll close out the month by hearing about PADS from Brian Stepien on September 30. We look forward to seeing you at Adult Formation, which will meet at 9:15 this year! And we look forward to hearing your thoughts regarding the new schedule. September 2012 Congratulations to Sawyer Hill, who was elected to the (Episcopal) Happening National Committee at this summer's National Happening Leadership Conference that took place in Monteagle, TN at the end of July. Visit http://www.happeningnational.org/ index.html for more information on Happening. Continuing Education Opportunities: Praying Shapes Believing Lay people and clergy are invited to join Bishop Frank Griswold at Seabury to explore Anglican spirituality and the rhythm of our worship. Praying Shapes Believing will include reading and reflection with a community of students led by Bishop Griswold, former Bishop of Chicago and former Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, and the Rev. Dr. Donna Ialongo. The course draws on Griswold’s book, Praying Our Days, published in 2009 by Church Publishing. This course may be taken for academic credit, CEU’s or for enrichment. Course participation requires online work and three intensive weekend classes at Seabury. Weekend intensives: October 12-13, November 9-10, and December 7-8. Registration: Academic and CEU registration deadline is September 4. Enrichment participants may register by October 5. Visit seabury.edu/courses for more information or email peggy.pearson@seabury.edu. Tracking Down the Holy Ghost An evening with Bishop Frank Griswold. Flannery O’Connor described the task of a serious writer as “tracking down the Holy Ghost.” In the course of this evening, we will consider how it also describes the life of a serious seeker or person of faith. Together we will explore some of the classical ways and practices by which we can attune our hearts and minds to engage in this pursuit and draw on the wisdom and experience of some of the men and women who have gone ahead of us. Date: Friday, November 9 from 7 to 8:30 pm. There is no fee for this program; however, registration is required. Register online at seabury.edu/events Birth of an Empire: Entering the Lukan Advent and Christmas Lead by John Dally – writer, educator and priest - October 26 & 27 in Chicago. This experiential workshop for clergy, musicians and laity will introduce participants to Advent and Christmas in Lectionary Year C. What is constant, and what is particular to this year? How do the themes in Luke’s Gospel speak to our parishes, our local communities, our nation and the world? Participants will gain a deeper theological understanding of the shape of the Lukan Advent/Christmas season that will help inform choices for preaching, music, liturgy and adult education and enrich the entire parish’s celebration of the birth of the Christ. Location: Seabury Western Theological Seminary, 8765 W. Higgins Road, Chicago, Illinois. Friday, October 26: 6:30 to 8:30 pm and Saturday, October 27: 9:00 am to 2:30 pm. Please plan to participate on both days. Fee: $40 per person; lunch on Saturday is available for $10. Register online at seabury.edu/events or by contacting Susan Quigley at 773-380-6785.
