Worth the Drive: The Walldogs Witness an art initiative in the making this summer when the Walldog traveling muralists roll in to the city of Plymouth. These artists, commissioned by towns across the country to paint one-of-a-kind murals that reflect the unique history and culture of the area, will be “Rocking the Cheese Capital” for five days this summer. This event has been in the works for over a year and will bring “Walldog Groupies,” art enthusiasts and 160 painters to downtown Plymouth. The city is no stranger to the medium. Artist Debbie Carr painted the mural on the Plymouth Historical Museum and has served as the Walldog liasion for the city. Carr will be joining her fellow Walldogs as they beautify yet another city to promote tourism and awareness of what Plymouth has to offer. Aside from a Walldog liaison, communities that want to host the group must also agree to raise money to pay for managing the program, with costs including publicity, volunteer housing and meals and stipends for the artists. According to Lisa Hurley, the executive director at the Plymouth Chamber of Commerce, local businesses and organizations raised over $120,000 for the 10–15 historically-themed murals to be painted. Mural sponsorship cost $5,000 per group, and Bank First National contributed $25,000 towards the project. “It’s been huge in terms of support and enthusiasm,” Hurley says. “It’s a unique experience for the community because 3 | Lawrence University Commencement Concert Performances by music students from the 2011 graduating class. 8pm. Using overhead projectors donated by the Plymouth School District, the Walldogs will project the mural renderings onto the walls of the buildings to be painted. All the lights in the area will be turned off so that visitors can watch as they draw the outlines. To raise awareness for the event, Plymouth artists are painting rocking chairs to remind people that the Walldogs “rock” the cheese capital. These chairs, as well as the artists’ original renderings of the murals, will be auctioned off to raise money toward upkeep and maintenance so the murals will last for generations to come. “Once the mural is complete we’re hoping it makes Plymouth a mural destination and draws attention to attractions in downtown Plymouth like the historical society, the Art Center, the antique center as well as specialty shops and dining,” Hurley says. The Walldogs will be rocking their way through Plymouth from June 22–26. — By Karilyn Robinson 8 | Dine on Deck: ColdTrain Nicolet National Bank presents an afternoon of jazz. 11:30am–1:30pm.
