The Division of Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmacognosy is composed of faculty members
with diversified research interests representing synthetic organic,
natural products, and biological chemistry. Research in medicinal
chemistry emphasizes drug design and includes:
❖ the synthesis of organic medicinal products,
❖ elucidation of the biochemistry of medicinal agents,
❖ examination of the relationship of chemical structure to
biological activity, qualitative and quantitative analysis of
drugs and related products, application of computational
chemistry to drug design.
Research in pharmacognosy emphasizes drug discovery and
encompasses:
❖ the isolation and structure determination of
pharmacologically active natural products from plants and
microbes,
❖ studies on the structure and biochemistry of biological products,
❖ examination of the biosynthesis of natural products,
❖ evaluation of the biochemical effects of these active constituents.
Pui-Kai (Tom) Li
Chair
Werner Tjarks was born and
raised in Bremen Germany, a
northern seaport town. Werner’s
studies in chemistry, drug design
and environmental aspects in
Germany led him to the US in the
early nineties to work with
Dr. Albert Soloway in a postdoctoral
position. In 1997 he took
a position as a Research Scientist
and now as a faculty member,
focuses in the area of cancer
research, specifically nucleoside
chemistry. Wener is attempting to
apply this science to the
development of anti-cancer drugs.
His research team is using
neutron-capture therapy to treat
cancer. Werner recalls that Dr.
Soloway was never too busy to
talk with any of his colleagues.
His office door was always open
giving his research group the
accessibility to him so critical to
their success in the lab.
Werner finds the academic
climate at OSU conducive to
collaboration and has forged
important relationships with
colleagues from the College of
Medicine and the Veterinary
Biological Science Department.
This year, Dr. Tjarks was
promoted to Associate Professor
of Pharmacy.
Karl Werbovetz’s experience at the
Walter Reed Army Institute of
Research gave him the opportunity to
see drug development in action and
formed his ideas for current
programs and collaborations here at
OSU. His research now is in the area
of anti-parasitic drug discovery and
development. A major problem in
developing countries, lethal
parasites, carried by insects, are a
major cause of death. As there is no
financial incentive to develop drugs
in this area, Karl works with NIH,
WHO and the Bill and Melinda Gates
Foundation to fund his research.
Karl joined our College in 2000 and
found a new commitment to
infectious disease research here at
OSU. His collaborations with
colleagues across campus are
building a bridge between Pharmacy
and other health units to continue
this important work in the area of
infectious disease.
From a small town in upstate
New York (Holland Patent), Karl is
happy to have found a home at Ohio
State, both professionally and
personally. He and his wife, Julie,
are raising their family of 3 (Luke,
Ben and Graham) in Worthington.
This year, Dr. Werbovetz was
promoted to Associate Professor of
Pharmacy.
