We have lots of great news to pass on about your fine young maties here on the S.S. Louis Pizitz! First, a huge ARRRRGGGH! to both our boys eighth grade basketball team and our wrestling team for taking the Metro-South Championship in their respective tournaments! Our guys dug down deep and found not only great talent, but lots of Pirate class and character to bring home the Number One trophies. We are so proud of these athletes and their great coaches -- Coaches Wyman and Faber in basketball and Coaches Prewitt and Merrill in wrestling. And speaking of coaches, we just found out recently that another of our own, seventh grade football coach Steve Gaydosh, has been named the Metro-South Seventh Grade Football Coach of the Year! Steve's young charges finished the fall season undefeated, and we are thrilled that our fellow schools have taken notice of the fine job being done by our Pirate Professionals! When you are the Best, others just can't help but take notice! Another tremendous honor earned by our unmatched crew was bestowed on our Symphonic Band, under the direction of Kim Bain and Marc Sosnowchik. Our band was selected to be a clinic band at the recent state convention of the Alabama Music Educators Association -- this is a signal honor given out very sparingly to a select few musical organizations in Alabama. The band performed before a large crowd of tough-to-impress band and choral directors from around the state...and received a sustained standing ovation that just about made your ole Cap'n explode with pride! As we close, I want to tell all of you how grateful we are for the generous support of the PTO in helping us purchase a new portable iPad lab for our students to use for research purposes. Funds from the PTO were pooled with school monies and a grant from the Vestavia Hills City Schools Foundation to purchase 25 iPads. Our teachers are already signing up to check out the lab for their classes -- you ought to see the students' eyes light up when they see the lab roll into their classrooms! The name of the game is engagement and making learning irresistible -- and this new teaching tool is doing just that. We are so blessed to live in a community that supports its schools with its time, encouragement and money so liberally, so that we can continue to stay at the head of the fleet and lead the way in making learning relevant, challenging...and fun! Have a great spring -- see you at the end of the voyage! From the President’s Pen... Laure Christie, PTO President As I sit here writing this article for the spring issue of the Pipeline….it’s snowing outside my window! It certainly doesn’t feel much like spring today, but it’s coming soon. I hope everyone has enjoyed the “snow days” we’ve had lately…I am looking forward to warmer weather! Speaking of warmer weather….fall will be here before you know it and Registration coordinators Erin Burton, Melanie Smith, Deanna Robbins and Stacy Bryant have already been hard at work getting ready! Watch the school website for more information and dates for both online and on site registration. Thank you to: Catherine Hogewood for serving as the PTO liaison to the 1
