Asia
Remember that dream? The one
that began on a pearly white
beach fringed by waters of
sapphire blue. Where waves of
incense flooded tiny laneways,
and in a small village, a rooster
crowed until the rice fields were
bathed in warm sunlight. But this
is no dream. This is Asia - and it
will take your breath away.
Asia does a good market
3 days, Chiang Mai to Chiang Mai
Departs every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday
ITINERARY... Day 1 Chiang Mai/Doi Mae Salong Set off from Chiang Mai towards the infamous Golden
Triangle, stopping en route to watch majestic elephants being bathed by their mahouts at an elephant
camp in the midst of the thick jungle. Visit the renowned Chiang Dao, a set of five interconnected caves
that are thought to span more than 12 km into Doi Chiang Dao mountain, before ending the day in the
remote community of Doi Mae Salong. Perhaps spend the afternoon wandering the markets to unearth
treasures crafted by local hilltribes, or settle in at a traditional tea house to sip tea and absorb superb views
of the nearby mountains. Day 2 Golden Triangle Stop off at the border of Thailand and Burma and take
some time to explore the local markets at Mae Sai - the northernmost town in Thailand. Then, head to
the point where the borders of Laos, Thailand and Burma meet - famously known as the Golden Triangle.
Hear the stories behind a place that was once the opium-producing capital of the world and pay a visit to
the Opium Hall to learn about the complex history of this region. Finish the day with a boat ride down the
Khong River. Day 3 Chiang Mai Admire the stunning Wat Rong Kun (white temple) in Chiang Rai before
heading to the Mae Kachan hot springs. Soak tired muscles in the pools and perhaps munch on quail eggs
cooked in the warm waters. Head back into Chiang Mai for the end of this short, action-packed break.
A favourite among travellers due to its relaxed feel and cultural richness, Chiang Mai boasts dozens of spas
and yoga studios, plus a night bazaar packed with bargain buys. There's so much to see and experience
here, you can always arrive earlier to spend a few more days in this vibrant northern city. Day 2 Elephant
Nature Park Visit the Elephant Nature Park, located at the end of a scenic drive from Chiang Mai through
the Mae Taeng Valley. The nature park is a unique project providing sanctuary to rescued elephants and
provides travellers with the opportunity to spend a day with these magnificent creatures. Learn about
their lives and why it is so important to protect them, feed them lunch and join in with bath time – if you
don't mind getting wet of course! Otherwise, simply kick back and watch the elephants as they cool off
in the water. Return to Chiang Mai in the evening to hit the markets or explore the fascinating Old Town.
Day 3 Chiang Mai Take an early morning Songthaew ride to the Kad Ton Payom flea market where alms
can be bought to offer passing monks. Sate appetites with a breakfast of local specialities before heading
to peaceful Wat Umong to revel in the ambience and hear the abbot speak about Buddhism and Dharma.
