Mineralogical Investigations
Information from mineralogical
investigations can add value at every
stage of the life cycle of a mineral deposit
‐— from exploration to resource evaluation,
mine planning, plant design and operation,
product quality control, and through
closure and site rehabilitation.
Mineralogy for feasibility
studies includes
quantification of
significant minerals,
determination of
mineral compositions
and the description
and quantification
of factors such
as size, shape,
texture, associations
and liberation
characteristics of the
minerals in ore samples,
products and plant
streams.
The information assists in
selecting and optimising
the most effective
processing flowsheet.
Mintek’s Mineralogy Division
• Houses the largest independent
mineralogical laboratory in Africa
• Has the advantage of Mintek’s
international reputation with full
metallurgical support and mineral
processing knowledge and equipment
• Assesses your individual needs and
tailors a scope of work to suit the project
and those needs
• Houses a well equipped sample
preparation facility including cutting,
milling, screening, sub-sampling and
preparation of polished and thin
sections.
• Employs a dedicated team of
mineralogists with a wide and varied
range of experience in all commodities.
• Uses Automated Scanning Electron
Microscopes such as the QEMSCAN TM
and MLA systems, conventional
Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM),
electron microprobe with light element
detection capabilities, X-ray diffraction
(XRD), and optical microscopy.
• Assesses and interprets the
mineralogical findings presenting them
in professional report format.
• The Division runs a dedicated Diamond
Provenance Laboratory which is funded
by the South African Diamond and
Precious Metals Regulator (SADPMR).
