Business owners devastated following theft
A NORTHSIDE couple are picking up the pieces following
a disturbing attack on their business.
Suzanne Alcock Thompson
and her husband John were left
devastated when Asu, the
Swords-based business they
poured their hearts into, was
robbed of thousands of euro
worth of goods.
The couple, who pride
themselves on having successfully
started their business in a
recession, suffered a major setback
when their premises on
Feltrim Road was ransacked on
the night of Thursday, May 3.
The criminals went to extreme
lengths to gain access to
the building.
The business distributes exclusive
nail and beauty supplies
to hundreds of salons, spas,
beauty training colleges and students
throughout the country.
Devastated Suzanne described
how she and her husband
are still trying to come to
terms with the robbery.
“This has been a devastating
ordeal for us,” she told Northside
People.
“We were left with little or
no stock coming up to a bank

holiday so we spent the next
few days frantically working
with suppliers from 10 different
countries to replenish our stock
so that we would have something
for our clients when we
reopened on Tuesday.
“The day after the robbery
we basically spent just sitting
there taking it all in as we
waited for forensics to carry out
their examination of the scene.
“But then we tried to focus
on getting back up and running
rather than dwelling on what
had happened.
“Our suppliers were absolutely
fantastic and we
worked with them right through
the weekend to get shipments
of products.
“We have been overwhelmed
by the support and
well-wishes we’ve received from
our clients and suppliers.”
Suzanne said she still found
it hard to fathom how heartless
and ruthless the culprits were.

momentum
A NORTHSIDE teacher is
working with the father of
a girl who took her own
life due to bullying to introduce
a mandatory Safe
School programme to
tackle the issue.
Siobhan McVeigh, a
teacher at St David’s CBS in
Artane, is part of the National
Anti Bullying Coalition
(NABC) who will meet
with Minister for Education
Ruairi Quinn this Thursday,
May 17, to discuss the problem
of bullying and how it
can be addressed.
The NABC was set up in
March 2011 and is working
towards the implementation
of the programme, a move it
believes will result in a radical
reform of classroom
learning and an overall better
education experience for
both teachers and children.

gathers momentum

Bullying is changing with
the times and with technology
which now means that victims
have no let up, according to Ms
McVeigh.
“Decades ago you could get
away from school bullying
when you finished school each
day but nowadays there’s absolutely
no safe haven,” she
stated.
“Cyber bullying has taken
over so kids are getting it in

why there needs to be a mandatory

Monica Monahan, president
of the NABC, believes the
key to the Safe Schools programme
is a no-blame approach.
“Too often the situation between
schools and parents is
one of ‘them and us’,” she
stated.
“In our current system we
tend to wait for bullying to
occur before we try to deal with
it.
“Our programme aims to
strip back to educating children
from a very young age as to
what is appropriate behaviour
and, therefore, to change the
culture in schools so that bullying
behaviour is less likely to
occur.”
According to a recent Government
report, ‘Growing Up
In Ireland’, 40 per cent of nineyear-olds
have been bullied in
the past year.
Further to this, a UNICEF
Ireland study – ‘Changing The
Future: Experiencing Adolescence
In Ireland’ - found that a
shocking 55 per cent of
teenagers in Ireland experience
bullying.

Asu employs three office
staff and a team of educators
who run training classes.
Further adding to Suzanne’s
distress and loss was the theft of
her laptop, which contained
priceless pictures of her two
young sons from when they
were babies.
Suzanne is issuing an appeal
to all those who work or are involved
in the beauty industry to
be mindful of any of the products
stolen from Asu being sold.

Council not keen on
big screen proposal
THE chances of watching the Republic of Ireland’s
matches in the European Championships this summer
on a giant screen in the city centre have been dashed by
Dublin City Council.
Dublin North Central TD
Aodhán Ó Ríordáin (Lab)
wrote to Dublin City Manager
John Tierney asking him to
take the initiative on the big
screen project, which he has
been campaigning on for many
years.
However, the city council
has poured cold water on the
proposal.
Deputy Ó Ríordáin wants
large sporting events, such as
the European Championships
and the European Rugby Cup
Final involving Leinster, to be
screened in the heart of the city
for fans who could not attend
the events in person.

“It is the mark of a truly
modern European city that its
public realm is valued and that
occasions that can unite the city
are prioritised and celebrated,”
he told Northside People.
“Right across Europe, city
authorities have arranged for
major sporting events to be
screened in large public spaces
to foster a deepening sense of
local and national pride.
“Every time a major international
sporting event takes

cities such as London, Berlin
and Paris supporting their respective
teams at outdoor
screenings and I would love for
fans in Dublin to be able do the
same.
"We thankfully have many
big sporting occasions to look
forward to in the coming weeks

them as a city.”
Deputy Ó Ríordáin believes
that with a little vision, and
with co-operation from the private
sector, Dublin City centre
could host a series of familyfriendly
big screen events for
fans to cheer on their team.

also welcome the opportunity
to see more pedestrian traffic in
the city,” he stated.
"I look forward to working
on this issue with the council
over the coming weeks in order
to ensure that there is a facility
for people to take part in a civic
celebration of sporting achievement.
“This proposal makes economic
and civic sense and I
hope the city manager looks
positively on my proposal.”
A spokeswoman for Dublin
City Council said that on previous
occasions it has discussed
the possibility of public screenings
of big sporting events in
public areas in the city.
Analysis
“However, following analysis
it would seem that there is
little public demand for such
screenings unless all the ancillary
elements were provided –
bars, entertainment and family
friendly activities,” she told
Northside People.
“Also, public screenings of
major events would have to be
carried out in a safe, secure environment
and require major
event planning and Garda support.
“Therefore, those events
that are generally covered by
terrestrial TV for home viewing
and shown in bars may have
sufficient coverage without the
need to invest significant public
monies to stage centrally.”
The spokeswoman added:
“If any of the sporting codes
are interested in showing major
events to their fan base/public

happy to assist in promoting
these opportunities.”

THERE was disappointment on the
Northside last week when the Dublin
Airport Authority (DAA) announced that
it is seeking 150 voluntary redundancies.
The redundancies are being sought by
the DAA as part of a restructuring programme
aimed at reducing its cost base.
Initially, the redundancies will only
apply to areas being restructured, which include
Retail and Passenger Services at
Dublin Airport's Terminal One, and the
Asset Management and Development division.
However, applications from staff in
other areas may be considered if funds are
available. The closing date for applications
is June 22.
A spokeswoman for the DAA said attempts
to stabilise its financial position
have not been enough to get the company
back on a solid footing.
“Consumer sentiment remains weak in
Ireland and the UK, which is a key destination
for air travel to and from DAA airports,”
she stated.
“The 2010 Cost Recovery Programme
helped stabilise the DAA’s financial position,
but the external economic environment
has not improved and it is necessary
for the company to take further steps to
make its business even more efficient.
“A restructuring process is currently underway
in several specific business units
within the company and to facilitate this

process, a limited voluntary severance
scheme and voluntary early retirement
scheme has been introduced.
“The company has communicated with
staff representatives in relation to the restructuring
plans in recent days.”
Dublin North Senator Darragh
O’Brien (FF) said he was disappointed to
hear of the news.
“The fact that these redundancies are
initially being sought in the retail and passenger
services sectors reflects a downturn
in passenger numbers and passenger
spend,” he stated.
“This is why we need to refocus efforts
on attracting tourists and investment into
the country.”

Fifty jobs announced for Clonshaugh
THE Northside got a welcome boost last week following
the announcement that 50 new jobs are to be created
through an €11 million investment in a Clonshaugh
based business.

Mater development
to boost local economy
THE north inner city is expected to reap major economic
benefits from the new Mater Adult Hospital development,
the first phase of which opens this summer.
Local representatives have
welcomed the €284 million
project, describing it as a huge
contribution to urban renewal
and employment opportunities.
The first phase of the landmark
new facility announced
by Minister for Health James
Reilly, will be fully functional
by June of this year. Phase One
includes a new outpatients’ department
and catering and technical
services.
Phase Two of the project
will see the construction of a
new emergency department,
underground car park, 12 operating
theatres, ICU, radiology
and 120 one-bed ensuite rooms.
This will be rolled out between
July and December of

Dublin City Councillor Niall
Ring (Ind) welcomed this major
infrastructural project in his
constituency.
“The new Mater Campus
Hospital Development will not
only radically improve the quality
and service and care for patients,
but will also be of major
economic benefit to the north
inner city,” said Cllr Ring.
“I would hope that along
with the improved health facilities
there would also be job opportunities
within the new
campus for locals, in recognition
of their continued commitment,
support and backing for
the hospital over a long number
of years.”
Cllr Ring added that he will
be seeking a meeting with the
chief executive of the new
Mater Hospital, Brian Conlon,
to discuss how the facility will
promote urban renewal and impact
positively on the local
economy.

holding a kids’ charity
soccer tournament at
the end of the month in
aid of St Francis Hospice
Raheny.
Mark Byrne is manager
of the Under 15 schoolboy
team at St Paul’s Artane
Football Club.
The 5/7 aside tournament
will be held on the
club’s all-weather pitch on
Saturday, May 26, with all
the action starting at 10am.
Mark said: I’m running
this tournament on behalf
of my mother, Ann Byrne,
who died from cancer last
August. All the proceeds
will go to St Francis Hospice.
“My mother died very
peacefully thanks to the
Hospice staff. I want to give
something back to them for
everything they have done
for my mother and our family
and for all the families of
people who have died from
cancer.
“I have asked local businesses
to donate money and
have been selling raffle tickets.
I will also hold the raffle
after the tournament that
day.”
All of the teams taking
part are already in place for
the tournament and will
contest the Ann Byrne Memorial
Cup.

role in fighting the spread
of infection.
Currently the Mater hospital
admits approximately
16,500 patients each year. In addition,
it treats in the region of
40,000 day patients, 47,500
emergency department cases
and more than 220,000 outpatients
each year.
Clinical Director, Professor
Conor O’Keane, said the hospital
has “a tradition of excellence
in patient care for over
150 years”.
“This new facility will also
allow us to break free of the
shackles of limited space, as we
will now have appropriately
sized departments and waiting
areas,” he added.
“This landmark building
provides patients and staff with
an environment reflective of the
quality of care patients get at
the Mater into the 21st century
and beyond.”
The hospital will benefit
from the State’s Percent for Art
Scheme whereby one per cent
of the cost of any publicly
funded capital, infrastructural
and building development is
ring-fenced for the commissioning
of works of art.
Under the scheme two tapestries
by internationally
renowned Irish artist, Patrick
Scott, will be in the new outpatients’
department. Further artworks
are being commissioned
through the building.

Bridge club celebrates milestone
MALAHIDE Regional Bridge Club held its 25th annual Bridge Morning recently
to raise much-needed funds for St Francis Hospice.

Speaking at the lunch, Brendan
Gleeson congratulated the Bridge
Club members on their 25th anniversary.
“I am told that this is the longest
standing event in the history of St
Francis Hospice, an event, that while
born out of great personal loss, has
brought so much comfort, care and
support to patients and families of St
Francis Hospice over the years,” he
said.
Brendan told Patsy that she, along
with her family, friends and supporters
have made an enormous difference
in the lives of people within their
community and beyond.
The past 25 years have seen St
Francis Hospice grow from such
small beginnings - three small portacabins
based in the Capuchin Friary,
to a fully operational hospice in Raheny
and more recently the partial
opening of a second hospice in Blanchardstown.

Patsy, her family and members of
Malahide Bridge Club on their extraordinary
efforts over the past 25

Black market smokes still in demand
A NORTHSIDE shopkeeper
has said the recent
haul of cigarettes worth
€15 million at Dublin Port
shows that the market for
illegal tobacco is growing
rather than waning.

for criminals.
The seizure on April 13 was
the third largest in the history of
the State.
“It’s great that these cigarettes
are being seized before
they hit the streets but it does
show that there is still a market
for Irish and European criminals
to make money here, otherwise
they wouldn’t be
shipping such large amounts of
illegal cigarettes into the country,”
Mr Gilsenan stated.
“The market is obviously
extremely profitable and the
risk these criminals run if
they’re caught isn’t a deterrent.
“The penalties for being
caught are simply not strong
enough. The big-time criminals
are not going to get caught and
it’s the small-fries who are paying
the fines on their behalf,
which are peanuts in relative
terms when you think of how

much money is being earned
from the import and sale of illegal
cigarettes.”
While Mr Gilsenan welcomed
and praised the work of
customs and the gardai, he criticised
the Government and the
criminal justice system for
what he called a “soft touch
approach”.
“Customs and the gardai
have their hands tied because
the Government isn’t giving
them the manpower they need
to make a serious difference
and the justice system is such
that illegal smugglers are only
getting a slap on the wrist if or
when they come to court,” he
stated.
“We as shopkeepers find
that the gardai and customs act
quickly and take seriously any
tip offs we give them on the
street sale of cigarettes.
“Just recently I called the
gardai after I saw a guy selling
smokes on a street corner close
to my shop and they lifted him
within minutes.”
Dublin has the highest rate
of cigarette smuggling in the
country, according to figures recently
released by the Irish Tobacco
Manufacturers’ Advisory
Committee.
Last year the capital registered
50 convictions for illegal
tobacco activity, 32 for smuggling
cigarettes and 18 people
were convicted for selling illegal
cigarettes.
Only three counties - Sligo,
Kildare and Roscommon – didn’t
register any convictions
while Cork was second to
Dublin in the illegal cigarette
conviction stakes.
The average fine for selling
illegal cigarettes in 2011 was
€2,833, while the average fine
for smuggling tobacco was
€1,829. One smuggler from
Dublin was fined just €50 on
conviction.
A spokesperson for the Irish
Tobacco Manufacturers’ Advisory
Committee said the statistics
may be shocking to most
people.
“It’s not surprising to see a
30 per cent increase in activity
from 2010 to 2011,” the
spokesperson added.
“People need to understand
this is not just a person trying to
make a quick buck, this stems
from high level international
crime gangs involved in child
trafficking, prostitution and terrorism.”
New figures show
rise in burglaries
NEW Garda figures released to a local TD have shown a
rise in burglary and related offences in the Garda ‘R’ District
which comprises the Coolock, Malahide and Swords
Garda stations.
In the Dail recently, Dublin North East TD Tommy
Broughan (Lab) asked Justice Minister Alan Shatter to outline
what action he intends to take to tackle the rise in burglaries
given the eight per cent annual increase in burglaries
across the country recorded by the latest CSO figures.
The CSO has now released further figures to Deputy
Broughan in relation to the Garda ‘R’ district that have confirmed
this trend.
In total, burglary and related offences increased from 714
in 2010 to 770 in 2011.
This included a very significant rise from 256 to 327 in reported
incidents to Coolock Garda Station between 2010 and
2011; a very slight decrease from 269 to 267 of burglaries reported
to Swords Garda Station; and a slight decrease of incidents
reported to Malahide Station from 269 in 2010 to 267 in
2011.
“My colleague Deputy Michael Conaghan highlighted to
Dail Eireann that of 25,377 burglaries recorded in 2010 only
one in 12 (approximately 2,000) led to a conviction and that
more than 40 per cent of all burglaries occur in the Dublin
metropolitan area,” said Deputy Broughan.
“It is clear that greater action by the Justice Minister is
necessary to tackle this very pernicious criminality facing
householders.”
Deputy Broughan added that he intends to pursue the
matter with Minister Shatter.

Council vows to
tackle gum litter
FINGAL County Council has vowed to tackle the sticky issue of gum litter after launching its
2012 campaign last week.
It is being run by the Gum Litter Taskforce
(GLT) in association with local authorities throughout
Ireland. The National Gum Litter Awareness
campaign aims to reduce littered gum in the most
sustainable way: by changing irresponsible disposal
behaviour – the root cause of the issue – by encouraging
the public to dispose of their gum responsibly.
The GLT includes representatives of the chewing
gum industry, Department of the Environment,
Community and Local Government, Food and
Drink Industry Ireland, local authority representatives
and civic society.
Speaking at the launch, Edwina Dunford, Environmental
Education Officer, said the key to tackling
the gum litter and all forms of litter is education.
“This approach to education builds awareness
and influences behaviour in order to deal with the
problem at source and stop people from disposing
of gum irresponsibly,” stated Ms Dunford.
“The campaign has delivered very impressive results
in the past in terms of reductions in gum litter
levels and I hope to see similar success in our
town/county/city this year.”
The theme of the 2012 campaign is ‘Bin it your
way’ and it features a series of professionally choreographed
and highly innovative dance moves which
communicate the responsible disposal of litter in an
engaging way.
There is also a strong interactive element to the
campaign with members of the public being encouraged
to go online at Facebook.com and search
‘Bin it your way’, view the dance moves and record
and upload some of their own.
The campaign will also include:
● A schools education programme aimed at first
year secondary students called ‘Bin It!’ This includes
an actor-led workshop tour which will take place in
schools each autumn and tools and materials for
teachers to download and integrate into lesson plans.
A mass media advertising campaign (outdoor, print,
online and radio) which runs for approximately
three months.
● Distribution of point of sale materials to over
1,000 retailers around the country.
● Litter monitoring by local authorities to see how
much littered gum is reduced on the streets as a result
of the campaign.
● Sponsorship of five categories in the Tidy Towns
awards.

The campaign is focused on educating the
minority of consumers who dispose of their
used chewing gum irresponsibly, that used
chewing gum is classed as litter and irresponsible

Boost for swimmers at Fingal’s beaches
ALTHOUGH there’s a question mark
over whether we will get the opportunity
to use our local beaches during the
summer due to our often erratic
weather, at least sea swimmers can take
comfort in the fact that all of Fingal’s
beaches have met the EU standard for
water quality.
This is a marked improvement from
2009 when three of Fingal’s nine beaches
failed the minimum standard.

Top international award for Grangegorman plan
THE Grangegorman regeneration
project has scooped
its second major award of the
year, despite being postponed
by the Government last November.

The latest accolade is the
sixth international award for the
landmark project in Dublin’s
north inner city which has been
deferred under the Government’s
Infrastructure and Capital
Investment 2012-2016 plan.
However, the Grangegorman
Development Agency is still
hopeful the multi-million euro
project will go ahead and is examining
alternative funding and
construction arrangements that
could see the DIT campus open
to students from 2015.
Relocating
The proposed redevelopment
of the former St Brendan’s
Hospital grounds involves relocating
DIT, which is currently
based in 39 locations across the
city, to the new campus near
Constitution Hill and North Circular
Road.
The plan also involves the redevelopment
of HSE facilities
for the elderly, as well as a new
urban quarter.
The project received a welcome
boost last week when the
Society for College and University
Planning (SCUP), which is
the largest independent organisation
in the world focused on
campus planning and design,
announced the Grangegorman
Masterplan as the recipient of its
2012 Honour Award.
And later this month designers
of the Grangegorman plan
will be presented with the Honour
Award for Regional and
Urban Design by the American
Institute of Architects at a ceremony
in Washington.
Speaking from his home in
California, principal designer
James Mary O’Connor said he
hopes the two prestigious
awards will help publicise the
Grangegorman project.

The Dublin 7 native, who is
also a DIT graduate, said the
project needs all the “support
and momentum” it can get to
keep on track despite the deferral
of major infrastructural funding.
“Our goal for Grangegorman
is to create a place which
will enrich the city fabric, a place
full of vitality to serve the needs
not only of the immediate users
of the quarter but indeed the entire
community,” said Mr
O’Connor.
Postponed
Although Government funding
has been postponed, the
Grangegorman Development
Agency is doing all it can to
bring the site into use as soon as
possible, with the encouragement
of Minister for Education
Ruairi Quinn.

the agency was not faced
with an easy task, receiving
recognition such as the SCUP
and AIA awards served as a reminder
to all concerned that the
masterplan is a great project.

MEMBERS of the Artane Active Retirement Association were out
in force at the Active Retirement Ireland (ARI) Trade and Tourism
Show, which took place in Dublin recently.
Local representatives Christy and
Marie Smith, who are residents of
Artane and have been married for 47
years, were among those who enjoyed
the event.
It included a fashion show where
all the models were aged 55-plus, a
cookery demo by celebrity chef Kevin
Dundon and a health section providing
free checks, advice and talks.
More than 80 exhibitors were on
hand to highlight the best Ireland has
to offer to the actively retired hoping
to holiday at home this year.
Maureen Kavanagh, chief executive
of ARI, described the show as a
resounding success, and thanked all
those from across the country who attended.
Ms Kavanagh said the Trade and
Tourism Show not only turned out to
be a great day out, but also demonstrated
the value to the economy of
the ‘grey euro’.
“There are almost one million
people aged 55 plus in Ireland,”
stated Ms Kavanagh.
“That means over 20 per cent of
our population are either already retired
or facing into their retirement
years.
“Never before have we had such a
significant proportion of our population
in this age-bracket.
“And, thankfully – due to medical
advances, better education and
healthier lifestyles – older people are
now living longer and leading more
active lives.”
Ms Kavanagh added that while
many older people don’t have huge
disposable incomes, they are generally
shrewd and canny consumers,
who carefully weigh up the options
on offer and choose products and
services that deliver value for money.

TV PRESENTERS Anna Daly and Lisa Cannon helped launch one of Ireland’s
most fashion-forward fundraisers, Down Syndrome Centre’s Buy My Dress campaign,
supported by Kellogg’s Special K.
The Down Syndrome Centre hopes to raise
€120,000 this year through the fundraiser,
which will take place at various locations around
the country on Saturday, May 26.
The Dublin Buy My Dress sale will take
place at the Royal College of Physicians, Kildare
Street, on May 26 from 11am to 5pm.
Now in its fourth year, Buy My Dress invites
women of all ages, shapes and sizes to dig out a
lonely dress from their wardrobe that is in good
condition and donate to them to the one day,
pop-up sales taking place in Dublin, Cork, Galway,
Mayo, Waterford, Kilkenny and Wexford.
This year, along with continuing to fund an
existing Down Syndrome Liaison Nurse – who
provides invaluable advice, support and guidance
to parents whose newborn has just been diagnosed

and services necessary in the development
of children born with Down Syndrome.

is organised by the Sustainable
Energy Authority of Ireland
(SEAI) and supported by the
Better Energy programme and
the Department of the Environment.
Encouraging
The aim of the project is to
increase students’ understanding
of energy efficiency and
climate change by encouraging
them to take individual and
collective responsibility for
tackling these important issues.
It also aims to highlight how
one good idea can make a big
difference to our pockets, ourselves
and our planet.
The Chanel College students
– Ryan O’Keeffe, Adam
Doherty and Sean McGrath –
with the support of their
teacher Jackie Whelan, came
up with idea of having a solar
compact bin located near their
school in Coolock Village.

O’Toole (SF) supported the students
with their idea to have the
bin installed on a trial basis.
Cllr O’Toole commended
the students and Ms Whelan for
their project.

initiative,” said Cllr O’Toole.

the support of Jim Kelly and
Executive with SEAI, said they
had a tough job choosing the finalists
this year.
“The high standard of this
year’s entries far exceeded our
expectations and it has been
very encouraging to see the
time and effort the students put
in,” she stated.

New football song set for release
A NEW song has been written to celebrate the Irish soccer
team’s achievement in reaching the 2012 European
Championships in Poland and the Ukraine.
Mahony, a passionate
singer/songwriter from Dublin,
has recently returned from the
US, where he was touring with
his first album ‘Love Child’.
He co-wrote the song ‘We’re
On Our Way’ with Rob Malone.
Rob is David Gray’s bass
player and co-wrote and also
produced the single.
The uplifting lyrics and singa-long
chorus are set to rouse
the nation into cheering on the
boys in green.
All proceeds from the sale
of the single will go to the LauraLynn
Children’s Hospital in
Dublin.

Big crowds expected in Skerries for Rás finale

A NORTH county Dublin
town is preparing for its involvement
in the most
prestigious cycle race in
the Irish calendar.
On Sunday week, May 27,
after eight gruelling days of cycling,
riders in the 2012 An Post
Rás will cross the finish line in
Skerries in what is expected to
be an enthralling climax to the
60th edition of the famous race.

is hoping to see similar
crowds.
“There has always been a
superb crowd in Skerries on
each occasion the race has finished
there,” said Mr Dignam.
“The battle among the
teams to take that coveted Rás
jersey home always makes for
great viewing.”
The final stage sets off from
Cavan at 11am with the peloton
heading south in a 139 kilometre
run to the stage finish in the
seaside town and Mr Dignam is
predicting plenty of action
along the way.
“The final stage will be a
difficult one,” he stated.

final stage finish by hosting a
massive street party from
12.30pm on the Sunday with a
range of activities for all ages
including street games, funfair,
music and dance, face painting,
magic shows and farmers’ markets.
The eight-day international
cycling road race takes place
from May 20 to 27. As well as
the global feel to the event, the
emphasis will again be on national,
regional and top level
sponsored amateur cycling
teams.

A volunteer abroad
Ireland’s first annual National Volunteering Week takes place from
May 14-20. Helen O’Flinn from Drumcondra is a VSO
volunteer working in Kampala, Uganda. Here, she describes her
experiences so far and tells us a bit about her placement

THE roller-coaster ride in deciding whether to take up a
placement offer as a volunteer was one of the best decisions
I have made. Ending up in Uganda in the capital
city Kampala has been an amazing experience so far.
I had wanted to do development
work on a voluntary basis
from as far back as I can remember
and when I eventually
looked into it seriously I decided
that VSO fitted best with my
views towards development.
Sharing skills and working
in a sustainable way were the
main attractions for me and I
was delighted when I was successful
in the recruitment
process.
The reality of arriving incountry
and getting stuck in has
been amazing and challenging. I
was surprised that I had a good
bit of ‘culture shock’ in the first
few weeks having travelled to developing
countries previously.
Garda Stations Closures
The Government recently announced that a number of Garda Stations, across the country, have closed permanently
or have reduced opening hours for public service delivery.
Chief Superintendent Francis Clerkin wishes to inform persons residing or working in the Garda Dublin
Metropolitan Northern Division, (DMR North) how these changes have been implemented and how it affects
them.
Within the DMR Northern Division the following Garda Stations have closed permanently since the 29th
April 2012:
● Whitehall Garda Station
● Rush Garda Station
The telephone numbers for Whitehall and Rush Garda Stations have been discontinued, the following telephone
number should now be used.
Santry Garda Station (01) 6664000
Lusk Garda Station (01) 8437222
All Garda personnel attached to these stations have transfered to Santry and Lusk Garda Stations respectively.
However the same personnel continue to provide Community Policing Services, Foot patrols, Pedal Cycle Patrols
and Mobile Patrols in the areas affected by the closures.
Also within DMR Northern Division, the following stations have reduced opening hours since the 30th
April 2012, i.e. closed to the public from 9pm to 7am:
● SANTRY GARDA STATION
● MALAHIDE GARDA STATION
● HOWTH, GARDA STATION
The important message for the community is that these stations are not closed. Garda presence in the area
and their patrols remain unchanged. The current telephone number remains the same, however, during the
reduced hours they automatically divert to the District Headquarters at Ballymun, Coolock and Raheny respectively.
Gardai continue to work from effected stations, however the Public Counter Service is not available during
the reduced opening hours. The important difference is that the Gardai currently employed on desk duties in
the Public Office between 9pm and 7am have been redeployed to operational patrols in the community.
Chief Superintendent Clerkin has reiterated An Garda Síochána’s commitment to providing a professional
and effective policing service. An Garda Síochána’s commitment is to maintain operational effectiveness and
resilience.
He also emphasises the importance of partnership within the community in preventing and detecting
crime and maintaining a safe environment for everyone. He concluded, ‘Our pledge is to continue to invest
time and energy in those partnerships and relationships to the benefit of all’.

Learning about a new organisation
in a development context,
new ways of working,
adapting to a different pace - in
the sense that differing constraints
limit the speed to which
results can be achieved, meeting
so many great new people, getting
to know my way around a
new city, starting to build a new
life routine, learning about a new
culture and absorbing the huge
difficulties faced by people on a
daily basis in such a beautiful
country kept the mind ticking
over in the initial stages.
Adapting to all of this has
been a fantastic experience but
not without its ups and very
manageable downs.
Day-to-day life here seems so
normal now after nearly three
months. To be honest in Kampala
volunteers are spoiled for
choice in comparison to those
living outside the capital city.
However, the choice comes
at a price so access to variety is
not always possible as a volunteer.
Kampala is a tale of two
cities; modern commercialism
and wealth exist alongside slums
and extreme poverty.
Discussions regarding the
level of NGO input into Uganda
take place regularly (an NGO
exists on nearly every corner and
pocket of the country) and the
dependent behaviour that this
has helped to create among
some of the population is an at-
titude which Ugandans recognise
needs to shift to behaviour
that is empowered to develop
and succeed.
This view is reflective of the
empowering and sustainable
way in which VSO works with
partners.
Travel in Uganda is very accessible
and the tourism potential
here is vast with amazing
places and neighbouring countries
to visit. Ten Ugandan national
parks ensure that some
beautiful scenery and safaris can
be experienced.
Ugandan people are amazingly
friendly (and up for the
craic as much as the next Irish
person) and putting the effort in
to speaking some of the local
language goes a very long way.
Security is not a day to day issue,
although as in any large city in
the world common sense needs
to prevail.
My placement involves
working with a national Ugandan
network whose vision is to
build synergy for a HIV free
Uganda. Membership of the network
is open to local government
and civil society
organisations (CSO) working at
village, town, district and regional
levels with most at-risk
populations (MARPs).
Members come together in
their specific regions through a
technical working group forum
to work on common issues of
concern. The network also assesses
organisational capacity
needs of members and addresses
these with development initiatives.

Gymnasts beaming
after finals success
ARABIAN Gymnastics Club, based in Baldoyle, enjoyed
big success at the National Finals held in DCU
recently.
Twenty-five gymnasts from the club took part and did
themselves and the North Dublin Region proud. The club was
especially delighted for the under 11 girls who took home individual
titles.
Kellie Nangle came home as National Floor Champion
and despite an uncharacteristic fall on the beam also came
third in the beam competition. Jenny McGrane scored a
whopping 9.5 putting her in second place while the club also
took home numerous team medals.
Meanwhile, Arabian Gymnastics Club will be running
summer camps throughout July and August which are open
to complete beginners or advanced gymnasts aged three plus.

work is then enabled on

with all staff and board

which are run by the Network.

Local projects
planned for National
Biodiversity Week
FOREST Friends Ireland is involved in a number of local
projects as part of National Biodiversity Week, which takes
place from May 19-27.
The projects are:
● Tolka River Estuary Biodiversity project. This is study with
Forest Friends in partnership with Dublin City Council’s
Ballybough Community Youth and Sports Centre of the flora
and fauna of the Tolka river estuary. An exhibition of their
findings will take place in the Ballybough Community, Youth
and Sports Centre on Wednesday May 23.
● Save the Frogs Gardiner Street Primary School Biodiversity
Project. Forest Friends will demonstrate plans of how to build
a pond in a local school to promote amphibian conservation.
The school will hold an exhibition of the work of students
which will include posters and poems created by the students.
● North Dublin Rotary Club Howth Peninsula Biodiversity
project. There will be a presentation of the findings of the biodiversity
of the Howth peninsula based on fieldwork of local
students, which will take place on Tuesday, May 22. This will
be followed a week later by a talk by Donal Chambers, Environmental
Scientist, on the subject of biodiversity, Tuesday,
May 29. Both events will take place in the Marine Hotel Sutton.
● The Trees Where We Live - A biodiversity study of their
local trees by students of Bayside Senior School, Verbena Avenue,
Sutton. The project will involve creating awareness on
the part of the students of the importance of trees planted in
their estates in terms of biodiversity and their important functions.
It will also include the recording of tree biodiversity in the
areas where students of the school live and presenting the results
in a school exhibition. Students will be encouraged to design
tree posters take photos and write poems about trees for
the exhibition. They will be encouraged to write letters to Fingal
County council to promote the conservation of their trees.
The National Parks and Wildlife Service, part of the Department
of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government,
is promoting Biodiversity Week.

Peugeot Sport Unveils New 208
PEUGEOT Sport has revealed
the new 208 R2 in time
for the Tour de Corse, the
fourth round of the 2012 Intercontinental
Rallye Challenge.
Peugeot Sport driver

Benjamin Veillas drove the
hot hatch ahead of the field at
the event before staying on in
Corsica for a week of testing
after the rally.
To comply with regulations,
Peugeot Sport has fitted
a brand new 1.6 litre 185bhp
engine to the 208 R2. This new
engine is based on the 1.6 VTi
power unit that will be available
on some versions of the
new Peugeot 208, due for
launch in Ireland this summer
and will come with variable
valve timing (VVT) for the intake
and exhaust.

the weight of the body
shell to bring down the centre
of gravity, optimise where the
weight is located and reduce
the inertia of the car with short
overhangs. A long wheelbase

designed aerodynamics, low
bodyshell weight and new gearbox all
work together to result in significant fuel
consumption savings, to keep the costs of
competing to a minimum.

R2 will both be available in kit form or in
fully built form from November 2012

SEVERAL motor companies seem to like giving their
cars numbers as in the Audi A4, likewise Volvo with
their C30; Peugeot 208 and so on.
I find all the numbering a
bit confusing and prefer a
proper name for a car like a
Focus, Scenic or Civic. But
did you ever hear of the Mitsubishi
L200?
Well I drove the new version
of the L200 last week and
it was massive.
I don’t know what the
L200 stands for, but it sure
was a powerful 4x4.
In other countries Mitsubishi
has used names like:
Triton, Storm, Rodeo, Magnum
and Warrior for the
L200. Yeah, I like the last one,
I think Warrior sounds appropriate.
When picking up the L200
I asked Gavin Flood, Mitsubishi
Motors Marketing
Manager, what type of person
would buy one. He said that
the L200 has always had a
loyal and broad customer following
and is purchased by
people who need to reach difficult
locations. When you
need seating for five, carry a
lot of equipment and need to
get to your destination, no
matter what the ground conditions
are, then it looks like
the L200 is the vehicle for you.
The L200 is used by Irish
Coast Guard, Fire Services
and Mountain Rescue teams.
The big problem with driving
a pick up like the L200 in
Ireland is our unpredictable
weather. A pick up is fine in the
US or Australia where the
driver can call in to his or her
local store and place the purchased
goods in the open area
at the back. Imagine in Ireland
trying to bring home a bag of
cement in a pick up truck with
an open back. The cement
would be washed away by the
time you get home. Thankfully
the L200 I drove last week was
covered in and the cement
would have been dry, if I was
in the building game. The
● The L200 sure is a powerful 4x4.

in Ireland it’s necessary.
This is a powerful truck
with a 2.5 litre engine now
producing 178 brake horse
power. Most of my driving
was on city streets, but being a
farmer’s son I know the various

need to feed those sheep.
It’s was smooth enough on
the open road and I felt like
the King of the Road because
of the high driving position. In
the double-cab version I drove
there is room for five people. It
was wet last week and having
passengers in the back made it
very cosy. It’s a really long
motor and you need to be
careful when reversing as
there are no parking sensors.
And it’s extra long if you leave
down the door at the back
which can be very useful if
you are trying to lift something
heavy into the cargo
area.

outlets in the future when it comes to learning DIY skills
according to new research carried out by the AA’s new
Home Emergency Response service.
The AA, which has been exploring
attitudes towards DIY
among the ‘net generation’ as
part of its launch of AA Home
Emergency Response, reveals
that those in their twenties and
late teens are far more inclined
to turn to the internet for online
tutorials when they need to figure
out how to do a DIY job.
A total of 27 per cent of
those aged between 17 and 24
indicated that they’ve used the
internet and 16 per cent said
they’ve used YouTube specifically
to get step by step instructions
on how to do work
around the house.
Both these figures are 10
per cent higher than the overall
averages as calculated
across a sample of 11,000 people
of all ages, the AA reports.
Just one per cent of those over
the age of 65 said they had
used YouTube as a learning
tool to help with a DIY job.
While learning life skills
through digital media continues
to increase, the AA research
indicates that dads, for
the time being at least, are still
the number one port of call
when it comes to getting help
with home maintenance and
repairs.

learned some of their knowledge

A few easy steps to a statement staircase
Q: I recently decorated my hall and painted the walls a dark
duck egg blue. The trim is painted milky white and I have
cream carpet. The hall looks great now but I really feel like the
staircase needs some TLC.
The staircase is a dark solid oak and has shelving on one
side where we store our books. I would really like to paint the
entire staircase as I feel it is darkening the room somewhat.

you take a look at using a
product like Grip Extreme. This
product allows the top coat to
adhere and means you won’t
have to sand the staircase down
before painting.

and hallway upstairs for a completed

Remember, every part of
your home is just as important
