network into products which the market is
really requesting, said Maurizio Boiocchi, head
of R&D at Pirelli. He added that Pirelli has a
model of working with external agencies such
as universities and research centres to
leverage its own internal resources more
effectively.
Among projects currently active at Pirelli,
said Boiocchi, is an effort to improve the
robustness of the company’s truck tyre
casings, so as to make them more attractive
Pirelli to build JV plant for radial moto
in Indonesia
to retreaders and hence to
fleet operators.
By 2012, the company
expects to make the first
commercial generation of its
cybertyre technology available
to truck fleet managers. This
will allow the tyre to send data
about pressure, lifetime, history
and other operational
conditions to a central unit,
which can then monitor usage
and use the data to optimise
tyre purchase and maintenance
patterns.
A second generation will
come to market in 2015, and
Pirelli is currently working with
premium car makers such as
Maclaren, Volvo, Ferrari to fully
integrate the system with
vehicle electronics.
Boiocchi said that in the
LONDON – Pirelli intends to build a €66 million plant to make moto tyres in Indonesia.
Details are still being finalised, but Marco Tronchetti Provera, CEO said the company
intends to form a joint venture with a local partner called PT Astra Otoparts Tbk and
will select a site in the coming weeks.
The unit is expected to be on stream in 2013 and to be making 7 million
units/year in both radial and cross-ply constructions by 2016.
The venture will focus on radial segment for small motorcycles in the 50cc -
250cc engine range with some 500cc, with projected markets in Indonesia and the
rest of Asia as well as exports to the US and the EU. He said the radial market in
Indonesia is developing quickly, and the venture hopes to take advantage of the
move toward radialisation. Indonesia is one of the world’s largest markets for
motorcycles.
Francesco Gori said the tyres are relatively small compared with the supersport
products being made in Breuberg, and which will be made in the new China moto
plant.
industrial segment, Pirelli’s efforts
will focus on the real needs of
the customers: more mileage;
fuel efficiency and a 30 percent
improvement in retreadability.
Eventually, he said, Pirelli would
add winter fitments to its existing
range of truck tyres. These
would increase traction in snow
by over 20 percent.
The company also said it
has access to a new silane
which offers better stability and
processability in compounds
based on silica and Solution-
SBR.
Furthermore, the
company’s Brazilian plant is
using silica derived from rice
husks, and this is likely to meet
the needs of 30 percent of
Pirelli’s Latin American
production by 2015. ■
MILAN, ITALY – Pirelli has posted sales of €1265.8 million in the first nine months of 2011, up 17.9 percent year-onyear.
Earnings (EBIT) were €451.2 million, up 46.8 percent. Profitability rose to 10.6 percent from 8.5 percent, the
company said in an 8 Nov results report. Net profit was €251.3 million, up 56.8 percent.
In the tyre business, Pirelli reported sales of €4225.7 million, up 18.7 percent compared with the first nine months
of 2010. Earnings (EBIT) were €484.4 million, a 44.9 percent rise from 2010. Profitability in the sector was a “record”
11.5 percent, Pirelli said.
Pirelli revised its 2011 sales target down to “below” €5.8 billion from previous targets of “above” this figure. Pirelli
tyre revenue was revised to about €5.7 billion, down from “above €5.8 billion.” Pirelli attributed this revision to the
negative effect of exchange rates, volume reductions and reduction of sales of lower profit products, as well as the
slowdown in truck demand in the EMEA region.
