Reflecting on her
cancer journey
Two years after her breast cancer diagnosis, Kim Lund can
look back on those days with perspective and appreciation.
“I learned a lot about cancer,” she says, “but also about the
kindness you find in the people who are taking care of you.”
The worst kind of news
Kim, an elementary school secretary, was 48 when she
heard the unwelcome news: She had breast cancer. There was
a lot to think about in those first days. Kim was diagnosed
through her nurse practitioner in Olympia, but she
considered going to Tacoma or Seattle for treatment –
she wanted the best.
“I would have made that drive if I thought I’d get better
care,” Kim says. “But the more I learned, the more I realized
I didn’t need to go.” She talked to her doctors, and to a friend
who had recently gotten excellent cancer care at Providence
Regional Cancer System, and decided that staying close to
home was her best option.
Fighting cancer, close to home
“As soon as I started treatment, I knew I’d made the right
decision,” Kim says. “Everyone was extremely competent, and
so incredibly kind to me. Now, in hindsight, I cannot imaging
driving to Seattle three or four times a week for chemo,
injections and lab work, when I had access to excellent care
right here.”
Kim recalls certain aspects of her care that solidly confirmed
her decision: Cancer Center staff were continuously in contact
with her to make sure the next step in her treatment plan was
scheduled and organized. Appointments with her oncologist
Xingwei David Sui, MD, lasted an hour, until all of her
questions were answered. At Kim’s pre-chemo class, her nurse
studied her personalized regimen in advance and was prepared
to talk about specifics, side effects and expectations.
“I felt that the Cancer Center staff did a thorough
‘training’ of me to make sure I was prepared. There are a
lot of unknowns in cancer treatment, but they answered
as many of these in advance as they could. I didn’t have a lot
of surprises.”
Throughout her treatment Kim took advantage of many
Andrea
Potter, RN,
CBPN-IC
of Providence Regional Cancer System’s complementary
therapies, including acupuncture, massage and visits with
a naturopath to help keep her on track with her nutrition.
When her treatment was done, she participated in the
Cancer Transitions program, a six-week course that helps
cancer survivors transition into the “new normal” that is
life after cancer.
Today, Kim is happy to report that her cancer prognosis
is excellent. “It may sound odd, but when my treatment
ended, I almost felt sad. I would miss seeing the people
at the Cancer Center, who had taken such good care of
me for so long.”
Providence Regional Cancer System offers
a variety of resources for people with cancer,
including patient navigator services, complementary
therapies, free classes and support groups.
Family Medicine or other Providence
Providing hope and healing
Sexual abuse of children has been in the
national news in recent years, but it also
happens right here at home. In fact, one
in four girls and one in six boys will be
sexually abused before the age of 18. Abuse
leaves lasting emotional scars, but an early
response can improve coping and reduce
stress, helping children and their families
get started on their journey of healing.
In our local communities, there appear to
be increasing demands and fewer resources
available for child abuse intervention.
Providence St. Peter Hospital’s Sexual Assault
Clinic & Child Maltreatment Center
works to fill that void. The Sexual Assault
Clinic provides specialized medical care,
support and resources to meet the needs
of families in crisis.
Our physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners
and social workers are always here for
victims of sexual, physical or emotional
abuse. Serving residents of Thurston,
Lewis, Mason, Grays Harbor, Pacific and
Wahkiakum counties, our specialists are on
call 24 hours a day, seven days a week to
provide medical evaluations for children,
adolescents and adults.
Preeti Bhalla, DO
In 2011, the Sexual Assault Clinic
provided nearly $400,000 in subsidized
services for 349 people, many between
the ages of three and nine. This important
work needs ongoing support, which is why
this year’s Christmas Forest Fund-A-Need
contributions will provide hope and healing
for children victimized by abuse.
For 25 years, Christmas Forest has served
as Providence St. Peter Foundation’s largest
annual fundraising event, generating
much-needed funds for programs such as
the Sexual Assault Clinic that are a vital
resource for our community.
We invite you to join us at the
Forest Nov. 28-Dec. 2. Stroll through
the beautiful trees and participate in
special festivities, all of which support
the Providence mission to provide health
services to those in need. You can find
details about these events or donate
online at www.provforest.org.
Thank you for supporting health care
services in our community. May each of
you have a safe and memorable holiday
season with family and friends.
Get the facts about flu shots
Flu season is officially under
way, but there is still time to
protect yourself. Infections
start occurring as early as
October and generally peak
in January and February.
It can take up to two weeks for your
flu shot to start providing full protection,
so it is best to get a flu shot as soon as the
vaccine is available, even if you received a
flu shot last year.
The flu virus is constantly changing,
which means the vaccine is also changing.
Public health experts develop a new
vaccine every year to treat the three most
widespread flu strains for the current year.
And, despite what you may have heard,
getting your flu shot does not give you
the flu. “If you feel achy and feverish after
the shot, it’s your own immune system
working to protect you; it’s not the flu,”
says DelRene Davis, ARNP, Providence
Medical Group - West Olympia Family
Medicine.
The flu shot is made from dead flu
viruses (germs). “When you get the shot,
these dead germs ‘trick’ your body into
making antibodies ahead of time,” says
Davis. “Now you’re ready to defend
yourself in case the real flu catches
up with you.”
Immunization is especially
critical for:
• people with chronic medical conditions
such as asthma, diabetes, heart or lung
disease
• pregnant women
• seniors age 65 and over
• young children
Anyone who lives with or cares for
those at higher risk should also get a
flu shot.
You can receive your flu vaccine
two different ways:
1. The “flu shot”– made from a killed
virus that has been tested and approved
for use. The flu shot comes in three
different varieties:
• A regular dose for those six months
and older
• An intradermal shot (injected into
the skin instead of a muscle) for people
ages 18 to 64
• A high-dose shot for those 65 or older
2. The “flu mist” – made from a weakened
vaccine, given as a nasal spray. The
spray is approved for those 2 to 49 years
of age who are healthy and not pregnant.
You should not get a flu shot if you
have a severe allergy to chicken eggs, have
had a severe reaction to a previous shot,
have a fever at the time, or have a history
