Dear Members,

Messages

OCC celebrates its 20 th anniversary this year and it is a

great occasion to reflect on how far we have come. We had

produced a commemorative book which captures the spirit of

the pioneers in building up the Club from scratch and how we

have come this far to be one of the top golf clubs in Singapore.

Kudos to the far-sightedness of the planners and architects for

creating the foundations for a golf club that has been able to

grow from strength to strength.

Our members have done their part through active participation in

golf and many other recreational events to keep the OCC buzz alive,

many volunteering in various capacities to organise activities as well

as offering their time and expertise to assist the Management team

of the Club on many projects through the years.

There is another group of people that we should recognise, a

group that perhaps more often than not, we take for granted.

I am referring to our rank and file workers, some of whom we

meet quite often as they are frontline service staff. Behind

this group are teams that come to work before dawn breaks

each day to prepare the golf course, the kitchens and other

facilities so that when you arrive for your tee off, or a meal, or

a swim, everything is fine and dandy. Some of them are direct

employees of the Club, while some are from our outsourced

partners.

Each of them makes an important contribution, be it washing

the kitchen, mowing the greens or changing the flag position

before the first golfer steps onto the course. All these add up

to us being able to stand shoulder to shoulder with some of the

best country clubs in Singapore.

OCC is in the business of creating fun and recreation for its

members and patrons. However, the operation of this business

of fun is hard work. It requires people to work hardest during

those periods when others are looking to play, for example

after work, on weekends and public holidays. It is a sacrifice to

be in the fun and recreation business. Yet our staff take these

challenges in their stride. They have been loyal employees, and

take their work seriously.

Our service staff and the back of the house colleagues may

be doing seemingly simple jobs, but collectively, they are the

backbone of the Club, holding up high standards of service and

maintenance. Each of them deserves our respect. Let’s value

every one of the workers in OCC, whether he or she is our direct

employee or a staff of our partners. Be generous in showing

your appreciation of their work well done so that they will be

motivated and continue to give their best when serving all our

members and guests.

The

Dear Members,

4

As part of the Club’s 20 th anniversary celebrations, we embarked on the

production of a commemorative book to mark this milestone. The book will take you

through the Club’s beginnings and the people and events that have made it happen.

It will certainly give members an interesting insight on OCC’s history, especially for

those who are not familiar as to how the Club was started. For example, since the

Club’s inception, the unions have supported OCC by purchasing floating corporate

union memberships, with the aim of making country club facilities accessible to union

members. The book will be sent to members by early September, so do look out for it.

To show our appreciation to our members for your support throughout these years,

the Club is pleased to announce the launch of a one-time special membership

entrance fees for ex-junior members to join the Club as an ordinary member.

With effect from 1 October, individual principal members can opt to purchase a

membership of the same category for their child who is an ex-junior member above

21 years old at 50% off the average transacted price. More details are in the magazine

and we will also be sending you an invitation on this launch.

Speaking of offers, members can look forward to new promotions at the driving range

where you can get instant rewards for topping up your range card. These incentives

range from Himawari vouchers to complimentary green fee vouchers!

Also coming up in September is the next edition of Vanda Terrace’s Singapore Hawker

Fare Buffet. Aside from local favourites such as fried carrot cake and laksa, there will

also be a salad bar and fruit counter this time for a healthier, more well-balanced meal.

Another major highlight of our calendar is of course the Oktoberfest. This year, we are

outdoing ourselves by holding it over three days! Join the golf challenge and enjoy the

evening as we celebrate with the 14-piece Swiss Alpine Lions Band on 4 or 5 October,

or gather your friends to feast on Oktoberfest delights over all three days. Vouchers

are on sale now so do join us for great German beer and cuisine.

We have just finalised agreements to have more affiliate clubs. This time, members can

look forward to golf at Nirwana Bali Golf Club in Indonesia, Pacific Dunes Golf Club in

Australia and Tsai Hsing Elite Club in Taiwan.

On the social and recreation side, we have lined up a trip to the fun and exciting

Legoland so members can spend quality time with family and friends. Sports

enthusiasts can join our classes such as Wing Chun, Taekwondo or the next Super

Sprint series in October.

At OCC, we try our best to ensure our members’ varied interests and preferences

are met. And we certainly hope you will partake in all these activities and

promotions organised for you.

Thank you and see you soon at the Club!

Secretary-General’s Cup

The Secretary-General’s Cup

is organised annually to provide opportunity for

OCC members and our friends from the Labour

Movement Family to bond. It was certainly a

successful event this year that saw many positive

bonds forged, with the entire game completed in

41/2 hours on the well-manicured greens!

The event concluded on a superb note with a

sumptuous meal for all, with many lucky draw

prizes won. We like to congratulate NTUC, the

winning team once again for this year, and

also thank all generous sponsors as well as our

enthusiastic participants for making this event

possible!

Double Celebration:

Tripartite Golf Friendly and OCC Turns 20!

The mood on 28 July was almost

festive. It was the 20 th edition of the Tripartite

Golf Friendly, which drew about 200 golfers.

The event was made especially meaningful as

it coincided with the Club’s 20 th anniversary.

There was also a cake cutting ceremony to

commemorate the double celebration.

Many may not know that the idea for a Tripartite

Golf Friendly came from Emeritus Senior Minister

Goh Chok Tong back in 1993 when he was Prime

Minister. Subsequently, our Club Captain, Oscar

Oliveiro, who was then the NTUC President,

organised the first Tripartite Golf Friendly event in

OCC. Since then, it has become an annual fixture on

OCC’s annual calendar.

This year’s champion’s trophy went to the union

team. Well done to all winners and we look

forward to hosting the event again next year!

15 th OCC Ladies

Invitational 2013

14

About 140 lady golfers from

13 clubs participated in the 15 th Ladies

Invitational, held on 5 August at the

Dendro and Vanda courses. A heavy

downpour suspended play in the

morning, but that did not dampen our

fair golfers’ spirits. Thankfully, the skies

cleared in the afternoon for the ladies

to complete their game on time. Our

golfers were treated to complimentary

coffee sponsored by Nestle, as well as

bananas and cherries to boost their

energy during the game. The merriment

ensued during dinner, where members

and guests mingled, feasted and danced

the night away. The winner’s trophy

went to Ms Koh Sock Hwee of OCC, with

an even par score of 73.

Thank you ladies for making the

15 th OCC Ladies Invitational another

wonderful success. We would also like to

thank all our sponsors for their generous

contributions. We’ll see you next year!

Good golf course, good dinner and the food this year was nice with the

sit-down dinner. Prizes were good too!

Felicia Tan (Changi Golf Club)

I always enjoy playing on your open. I must really commend you and

your staff. Staff like Rani and Ibrahim who always put in a great deal of

effort and always serve with a smile.

great event. Well done.

Francesca Kirkham (Singapore Island Country Club)

My twin sister and I enjoyed very much on that day. Thanks for

organising such a great event every year.

Fan Suet Lay (Orchid Country Club)

Congrats for a successful event. Had a good time! The band was great!

Leow Nyek Koon (Keppel Club)

The 15th OCC Ladies Invitational was a very well organised event,

OCC Touring Pro Unho Park Wins

Laguna Masters Tournament

22

OCC Pro Unho Park clinched a win at the Laguna Masters

tournament held at Laguna National Golf & Country Club on

23 – 25 July, even as he was four strokes behind at the start of

round four. He beat favorites Scott Barr and Mardan Mamat with

a great round of seven-under 65, his tournament best on the

championship course. But Unho remained modest about his win,

saying that the pin placements on the last round made it easier on

him.

What were your thoughts going into the final round?

I thought I still had a slight chance of winning, but obviously I had

to play well. But with guys like Scott Barr and Mardan Mamat, it

wasn’t going to be easy.

The pin placements can make the course quite tricky and the

first two days, the course set-up was quite tough as you saw

my scores weren’t that good. On the last day, they made it a bit

easier. It was just a matter of being patient and holing in a lot of

putts.

Any tips to conquer the Masters course at Laguna?

You have to be able to hit the fairways at the Masters course (at

Laguna). You could probably say that for all courses, but here,

you have to shape the ball out of the tee, and you have to be

able to move the ball around. It’s not a long course, so you don’t

have to drive on every hole. There’s a lot of water, bunkers and

OBs, so it’s all about keeping the ball in play.

Are you superstitious on the golf course?

My wife has been saying for years that I have too much ‘water’

element. So during the tournaments, I try not to wear anything

blue. This is probably one of those things that affect the mind…

it’s mind over matter.

Nirwana Bali Golf Club is a visual

masterpiece of dramatic ocean views and lush Balinese

landscapes. Designed by Greg Norman, the golf course

offers a spectacular challenge and a unique world-class

experience for golfers of all skill levels. Nirwana Bali’s 18-

hole golf course is one of the most photographed and

challenging golf courses in the world. With three holes

running along the cliffs of the Indian Ocean and terraced

rice paddies providing unique hazards, the course will

test the accuracy and consistency of a PGA Professional

and still be enjoyable for the average golfer.

Tsai Hsing Elite Club,

Hsinchu County, Taiwan

Avid golfers will find Tsai Hsing Elite Club

to be one of Taiwan’s most challenging yet enjoyable

golf clubs. Gracefully landscaped to combine

spectacular terrain with the stunning panoramic view

of Taiwan Straits, Tsai Hsing Elite Club was designed

by Gordon Lewis, a well known Florida based

American golf course architect.

The most remarkable aspect of the golf club is its square

measures of the greens, considered among the best of

more than 60 golf courses in Taiwan. In 2001, Taiwan

PGA Tour Tsai Hsing Open was held, and then the

Taiwan Senior PGA Open in 2008 and 2009. The unique

attraction of Tsai Hsing Elite Club has made its course to

be one of the most popular golf courses in Taiwan.

Come

Experience

the Art of

Wing Chun with

Ken Lim

Wing Chun is a unique and most

effective martial art. It is the only martial art

which legend says was created and made

famous by a woman, Ng Mui, a Shaolin nun.

Ng Mui realised that most of the techniques in

Shaolin kungfu were ineffective when used by a

smaller person or a woman like herself, against

the physically larger, stronger man. She also

realised that a woman could not match a man’s

stamina in a long fight. With this in mind, she

developed a system of fighting - which she later

named Wing Chun, after her favourite student,

Yim Wing Chun.

Sifu Ken Lim is a third generation student and

direct descendent from Ip Man’s lineage, the

recognised Grand Master of Hong Kong Wing

Chun. He studied under Sifu Ng Chun Hong

(Hong Kong), who was a student of Master

Wong Shun Leung (Ken’s Sigung) who in turn

was one of Ip Man’s better known students.

Sign up now to experience the art of Wing Chun

every Tuesday evening.

I took up taekwondo at the age of 5 under the

tutelage of my chief instructor, Mr Richard Wong,

who is an excellent mentor.

Throughout the 11 years in taekwondo, I grew from a

skinny and timid boy into a person with confidence

in my skills. Besides learning how to defend myself

in different situations, the sport also disciplines me to

work hard even when faced with difficulty.

The grooming I received from my chief instructor

led me to participate in the Pesta Sukan

Taekwondo tournament in 2006, which is held

every year for all taekwondo clubs in Singapore.

Our club participated in the tournament to gain

experience and hone our skills.

When training in a club, you will bond with the

other members to form a second ‘family’. I have

experienced this, and my time spent in taekwondo

training will be well remembered.

Thank you to Stan’s B-Fit programme –

Mission: SlimPossible

This testimonial serves as a form of

appreciation and sincere gratitude towards S&R Facilitator and

Senior Personal Trainer Stan Cornelius and his gym team. His

guidance and coaching throughout my weight loss journey has

changed my life.

I’m 16 years old and had always struggled with my weight.

I could barely even fit size XXL. I felt as though I had just

completed a marathon just climbing my school stairs and was

always out of breath. I felt a sense of despair and depression.

I was 105.6kg. I realised that something had to be done and

started to hit the gym. I remembered clearly what Stan said

to me when I was on the treadmill, “If you are going to keep

walking, you can walk out the gym door.” Things then took a

turn for the better when I joined OCC Stan’s B-Fit programme,

Mission: SlimPossible.

His sincerity and humble character certainly defines who he is in

many ways. Given his desire and burning passion to impart the

knowledge, Stanley is definitely the guy to help you attain your

fitness goals. He has inspired me to be in the fitness industry –

helping a once severely obese individual like me, to be where I

am now. It definitely feels great to have friends, family members

and even my school teachers approaching me for fitness tips.

Hopefully with the discipline and the never-say-die attitude, I will

be able to attain Stan’s physique in two years time.

Cleaners’

Appreciation Day

Golf 101 Training

Through this Golf 101 Training, we provided

our staff with the opportunity to learn more about golf!

This year, we got a chance to know our

cleaners better through a Hi-Tea Buffet on 17 June

2013. Our General Manager, Mr Peter Goh and a

few of our HODs donned Chef’s hats and aprons

to serve food to our dedicated cleaners. The high

tea included a Karaoke session, lucky draw with

one lucky winner who walked away with a pair of

tickets to the S.E.A Aquarium! All 40 cleaners went

home with a goodie bag worth $30. It was also a No

Cleaners Day for all offices in the Club.

Race Against Cancer

In an effort to build a healthier workforce

at OCC, the Workplace Health Promotion (WHP)

committee regularly organises sports activities and

encourages staff to participate.

The most recent highlight was the Race Against Cancer

event, organised by Singtel and Singapore Cancer

Society (SCS), which saw the participation of the

following enthusiastic staff. They underwent months of

training preparation to give their best shot during the

event, in support of cancer patients and survivors!

Hi Peter,

I hope this email finds you well.

This email comes a little too late, but I would like to thank

Ronald and his team for making an extra effort to come

down and support us for this event. It was through one of

our meetings only few days before where we told Ronald

about the event. Without any question, Ronald agreed to

sponsor the candy floss and popcorn for the event. This last

minute addition has brought cheers and delight to the kids at

the event.

The team has even take time off to help us for the event, even

though they are in the midst of several events in the following

week. We are very grateful for their sponsorship of the treats,

their help and support. A big thank you once again.

Dear Mr Goh,

On behalf of my General Secretary, Brother Hock Soon and Chairman of our

recently-concluded Golf Event, Sister Helen, I would like to show my heartfelt

appreciation to all the OCC staff who had lent their support to this event. From the

golf team to the banquet team, this event would not have been a success without

them!

My special appreciation would have to go to July, our main liaison for the whole

event. She has done a marvelous job!

Knowing that this is a fund-raising event, she took the initiative to arrange a

sportswear vendor to contribute part of their sales proceeds to us. FDAWU is truly

grateful for that.

I also want to commend her on her pre-event service as her high job competency

gave us great confidence to let her handle the golf matters and allowed us fully

focus on fund-raising. She also gave sound advice to us when our event was hit by

heavy rain. She even stayed back to ensure that non-golfers like us announced the

results accurately.

We are indeed very happy to have the opportunity to work with July and hope for

more to come.

In addition, OCC has always been very generous and supportive for this event. We

also like to take this chance to say a big THANK YOU!

We look forward to work with OCC in the future.

Loh Yong Cheng

Industrial Relations Officer, FDAWU

Dear Mr Peter Goh

We would like to extend our commendation to your staff of Golfing

Department for the professional and courteous manner that have

accorded to our SSG members during the conduct of our Annual

Golf Tournament on Wednesday, 12 June 2013. We received a great

deal of positive feedbacks from those who participated in the

tournament and many have already expressed their interest to

return and play at your pristine course again.

The use of Orchid Country Club and its facilities was very much

appreciated.

Your generous contribution in offering us a great deal and other

necessary arrangement was instrumental in helping us to attain

our goals in furthering and promoting the game of golf. All of

these would not have been possible without your help.

We look forward to your continued support in our future events.

Once again, thank you very much.

Yours sincerely,

Raymond Tan

President, Society of Singapore Golfers

To the Management of Orchid Country Club,

I recently had the opportunity to participate in the SG Cup that was

organised in which I played under the Union umbrella. I would like to

take this opportunity to offer my most sincere congratulations to the

management team of Orchid Country Club for the immense success

of this event. Throughout the tournament, the game flow was very

smooth, due to the marshals' efficient control. In fact, despite a full

turnout, we completed the entire game in 4 1/2 hours, which is no small

feat! The playing conditions were ideal too, with well-manicured greens

and ample time between flights. On top of that, the post tournament

dinner was sumptuous, not to mention the many lucky draw prizes for

the participants! The live band performance truly ended the day with a

superb note.

All in all, I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say that I enjoyed myself

thoroughly. Congratulations once again. Kudos to Orchid Country Club,

and I am looking forward to the next event!

Regards,

Koh Chuan Oh
