LEVEL ONE:<br />

5 DAY NARRATIVE THERAPY INTENSIVE<br />

D<strong>at</strong>es: 8th-12th February <strong>2010</strong>,<br />

26th-30th April <strong>2010</strong> & 7th-11th June <strong>2010</strong><br />

These one week <strong>workshops</strong> have been specifically<br />

designed for those who are rel<strong>at</strong>ively new to narr<strong>at</strong>ive<br />

ways of work<strong>in</strong>g or those who have had some exposure<br />

to the ideas and would now like the opportunity to more<br />

rigorously engage with narr<strong>at</strong>ive practices. This course<br />

will fe<strong>at</strong>ure a review of key narr<strong>at</strong>ive ideas and practices,<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g recent developments, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g: externalis<strong>in</strong>g<br />

convers<strong>at</strong>ions: the person is not the problem, the problem<br />

is the problem; re-author<strong>in</strong>g convers<strong>at</strong>ions: tell<strong>in</strong>g our<br />

stories <strong>in</strong> ways th<strong>at</strong> make us stronger; outsider-witness<br />

practices: l<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g lives and the use of audiences; remember<strong>in</strong>g<br />

convers<strong>at</strong>ions: consider<strong>in</strong>g the memberships<br />

of our lives; listen<strong>in</strong>g for altern<strong>at</strong>ive storyl<strong>in</strong>es; and<br />

document<strong>in</strong>g change: the use of letters and certific<strong>at</strong>es.<br />

Stories of therapeutic convers<strong>at</strong>ions, videotapes,<br />

transcripts and therapeutic letters will be shared th<strong>at</strong><br />

rel<strong>at</strong>e to work with adults, children and families. Detailed<br />

descriptions and illustr<strong>at</strong>ions of maps for <strong>therapy</strong><br />

will be given. Wh<strong>at</strong> is more, dur<strong>in</strong>g the week, many<br />

opportunities will be provided for participants to develop<br />

their own skills <strong>in</strong> narr<strong>at</strong>ive question<strong>in</strong>g through tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

exercises. We have found this to be particularly helpful<br />

<strong>in</strong> order for participants to then be able to use narr<strong>at</strong>ive<br />

practices <strong>in</strong> their own work context. This <strong>in</strong>tensive<br />

workshop will be relevant to counsellors, therapists,<br />

psychologists, social workers, welfare workers… <strong>in</strong>deed<br />

anyone who is work<strong>in</strong>g with the stories of people’s lives.<br />

LEVEL TWO:<br />

5 DAY EXTENDING NARRATIVE<br />

THERAPY INTENSIVE<br />

D<strong>at</strong>es: 22nd-26th February <strong>2010</strong> &<br />

14th-18th June <strong>2010</strong><br />

This one week tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g program is designed for<br />

those practitioners who have already <strong>at</strong>tended a<br />

Level One <strong>in</strong>tensive or its equivalent and would<br />

like to extend their knowledge and skills of<br />

narr<strong>at</strong>ive <strong>therapy</strong>. With<strong>in</strong> this week, participants<br />

will have a chance to thoroughly explore ways of<br />

weav<strong>in</strong>g and mov<strong>in</strong>g between the different maps<br />

of narr<strong>at</strong>ive practice: externalis<strong>in</strong>g convers<strong>at</strong>ions,<br />

re-author<strong>in</strong>g convers<strong>at</strong>ions, the absent but<br />

implicit, re-member<strong>in</strong>g convers<strong>at</strong>ions, and so on.<br />

Opportunities to share cre<strong>at</strong>ive ways <strong>in</strong> which<br />

people can provide an audience to preferred<br />

stories will also be <strong>in</strong>cluded. A range of different<br />

teach<strong>in</strong>g approaches will be used throughout the<br />

week <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g: the shar<strong>in</strong>g of ideas and stories;<br />

demonstr<strong>at</strong>ions of practice via video-tapes,<br />

transcripts and digital stories; collabor<strong>at</strong>ive stopstart<br />

<strong>in</strong>terviews to illustr<strong>at</strong>e and extend practice<br />

skills; and specifically developed practice-based<br />

exercises. This week will be focused on skills<br />

development. Opportunities will also be provided<br />

for engag<strong>in</strong>g with the dilemmas and complexities<br />

of narr<strong>at</strong>ive therapeutic practice.
