Dear residents and visitors,
I am once again delighted to present
you with a most interesting and
varied events programme for 2007.
Be it the Guitar Days in February, the
annual Cultural Days, the Folk Festival,
the City Festival or the Christmas
Market in December, you will find the
cultural city of Aschaffenburg shows
its attractive side all year round. We
would particularly like to recommend
a visit to the outstanding exhibition
“Cranach in Exile”, which will be on
display from February to June 2007 in
the castle museum, the Jesuit Church
Art Gallery and the Convent Church
of St. Peter and Alexander. The focal
point of the 2007 Cultural Days will
be the 400-year anniversary of the
building of the Schloss Johannisburg
castle, the symbol of our town.
The Craft Market and Carillon Festival

original reconstruction of a Roman
galley, a research project by the University
of Regensburg, will sail along
the Main and stop in Aschaffenburg.

History of the city
With almost 70,000 inhabitants,
Aschaffenburg, an administrative
district in its own right, is the largest
town in the lower Main area of
Bavaria. Because of its mild climate
it is also known as the Bavarian Nice

The Arkadenhof, in the heart of
the old town, is the venue for the
Aschaffenburg Maulaffenfest, the
arts festival staged by the Hofgarten
Cabaret. The courtyard of the former
Jesuit monastery in Pfaffengasse
offers the perfect setting for
peaceful, relaxed open-air evenings.
Needless to say, rest assured that
your physical well being will also not
be neglected! If the weather doesn’t
play, the events will take place in the
Hofgarten. So look forward to an
atmospheric start to the revue season

Pompejanum
Inspired by the excavations at Pompeii,
King Ludwig I of Bavaria (1840-
1848) had the perfect reconstruction
of a Roman villa built by Friedrich
von Gärtner. It is a copy of a house
in Pompeii, the house of Castor and
Pollux, named after a wall drawing
located in the entrance area.
Wall paintings and mosaic floors in
the gloriously colourful rooms were
created from Roman examples. Today
they form an appropriate backdrop
to the exhibition of original art works
from the state antiquity collections.
Pompejanum is picturesquely situated
by a vineyard over the Main, in the
middle of a Mediterranean-style
garden with almond trees and figs.

Every year from the Thursday
before the 1st Sunday of Advent
the smell of mulled wine, roasted
almonds, potato waffles and grilled
bratwurst fills the market place in
front of the town hall and castle:
the picturesque surroundings
of the Aschaffenburg Christmas
Market again provide the perfect
setting for a pre-Christmas stroll. A
Christmas nativity scene in typical
Franconian style with life-size
wooden figures is at the heart of
the Christmas market and every
evening provide the backdrop for
a varied cultural programme.
Amongst the numerous stalls
visitors will find Christmas tree decorations
and figures for Christmas
crib scenes, candles and glasses,
crafted ceramic and metal sculptures,
plants and other gift items.

Schönbusch Park
Schönbusch Park is one of the oldest
and largest landscape gardens in Germany
laid out in the English style.
From 1775 the Archbishop of Mainz,
Friedrich Carl von Erthal, had his deer
park remodelled in the English style.
The landscape architect Friedrich
Ludwig von Sckell had completed the
park by 1790.
The scenic characteristics of the park
are spacious wooded areas alternating
with extensive meadows. Located
within charming landscapes with
artificial lakes and “mountains” are
follies such as the lookout tower and
Red Bridge, the Temple of Friendship
and Philosopher’s House, small
villages and shepherds’ huts.
The Schönbusch offers a stylish venue
for numerous events such as the
annual Schönbusch Serenades.

Convent Church of
St. Peter and Alexander
The Basilica of St. Peter and Alexander
is as much an emblem of the city
as the castle. Otto of Swabia founded
the church in the 10th century. The
central core was built as a Romanesque
basilica, with further building
carried out in the Early Gothic style
of architecture.
It is richly furnished with works of
art of outstanding historical importance.
Besides the convent treasure, a
collection of gold work and liturgical
objects unique in the Diocese of
Würzburg, the convent’s works of art
include the 10th century Ottonian
crucifix, Mathias Grünewald’s “The
Mourning of Christ” and the “Maria
Schnee altar”, as well as the unique
Romanesque cloister. To commemorate
the 1000th anniversary of the
town and Convent Church in 1957
Pope Pius XII raised the church to a
Minor Basilica.

Municipal Theatre
This is one of the most beautiful classical
theatres in southern Germany.
It was built in 1811 under Prince-Primate
Carl Theodor von Dalberg at the
time of the principality of Aschaffenburg.
In 1961 the building was
lavishly restored following extensive
damage from air raids and shelling
during World War Two. Further expansion
and improvements, including
the final façade design are planned
and some of this work is already
being carried out.
Over 200 performances are scheduled
for the new season: drama, music and
dance theatre, studio stage, “pure
theatre”, musicals, revue theatre, jazz
and symphony concerts (in the Town
Hall) promise a varied programme
for different ages and interests. The
programme is available from the
Kulturamt and other outlets.

The Stadthalle (Town Hall)
at the Castle
The Stadthalle at the Castle is the
perfect venue for all sorts of events.
Various mobile facilities from seating
to technical equipment more than
satisfy ordinary venue requirements.
All rooms are fully air-conditioned.
Separate entrances and foyers allow
individual areas to be separated off
as required. All rooms can be joined
together for large events, such as a
congress with 600 participants or the
“Party of the Year” with 1,300 guests.
Added to that is the attractive
situation in the heart of the town
close to the Schloss Johannisburg
and the Pompejanum, the symbol of
Aschaffenburg.

Since 1990 the Jesuit Church Art
Gallery has been an exhibition centre
focussing on Classic Modern art,
with the secularised sacred area of
the church with its lavish mouldings
forming an impressive backdrop to
exhibitions of 20th and 21st century
works.
In 1612, at the same time as the
building of the castle, the Elector of
Mainz, Johann Schweikard von Kronberg,
founded a Jesuit settlement in
Aschaffenburg. The church near the
castle, which was started in 1619 and
completed by 1621, served not just
as a place of worship for the Jesuits,
but shortly after its completion until
1944 was also used as a Studienkirche
– a “study church” for the
grammar school run by the order.

A cinema rich in tradition, the
Casino Filmtheater first opened in
1953 and was completely refurbished
in 2004. The impressive domed
ceiling was retained and the soft
light of the modern chandelier lends
it a new aura.
Since then, two auditoriums (186 and
63 seats) show exclusively non-mainstream
films. The Casino’s Small Auditorium
offers a studio atmosphere
and a large glass panel allows a clear
view into the projection room.
A particular feature of the cinema
is the induction loop in the Large
Auditiorium for the hard of hearing.
The entire Large Auditorium is also
furnished with paired seats.
The café on the ground floor offers
a convivial place to relax throughout
the day including pre- and post-film
film screenings.

There has been a cabaret in the
courtyard garden since 1998.
The building, an orangery dating
from the 18th century, which had
since been used as a cinema, was lavishly
renovated by cabaretist Urban
Priol and made into a perfect venue
for cabaret and revue. The excellent
acoustics, modern technical equipment
and flexible seating guarantee
entertainment in the Hofgarten with
great cabaret artists at close quarters.
Excellent cabaret and revue with big
names from the whole Germanspeaking
world really do lend an
added attraction to the Lower Main
region of Bavaria.
Visitors can enjoy all of this at a high
standard in the Hofgarten. Maybe
even from the master of the house,
Urban Priol himself…

The Colos-Saal: the cradle of Aschaffenburg
club culture. Completely
inconspicuous from outside, it is
situated in the heart of the Aschaffenburg
pedestrian area.
It is an icon of Aschaffenburg’s
gastronomic scene.
Opened in 1984 as a live club (at that
time still called “Klimperkasten”),
it rescued the town from musical
banality and came to the rescue of
all those who see “entertainment” as
being something other than going
for a pint, pure disco, operetta or
dance music on a Saturday night.
Concerts by international stars pull
in the crowds and even within artists’
circles the Colos-Saal enjoys a reputation
as the place to be seen.
