<str<strong>on</strong>g>Seminar</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> <strong>Media</strong> <strong>and</strong> C<strong>on</strong>flicts<br />
<strong>April</strong> <strong>19</strong>-<strong>21</strong>, 2001.<br />
Transnati<strong>on</strong>al Institute<br />
Paulus Potterstraat 20<br />
Amsterdam<br />
Organized by the Thematic Network <strong>on</strong> Humanitarian Development<br />
Studies (Humanitarian Net) <strong>and</strong> the Transnati<strong>on</strong>al Institute<br />
A seminar <strong>on</strong> the process of learning, the creati<strong>on</strong> of knowledge <strong>and</strong> the<br />
disseminati<strong>on</strong> of informati<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> analysis <strong>on</strong> modern armed c<strong>on</strong>flicts for<br />
journalists, academic <strong>and</strong> n<strong>on</strong> academic experts <strong>and</strong> NGOs' press<br />
officers of the European Uni<strong>on</strong>.<br />
Around of 30 armed c<strong>on</strong>flicts are currently <strong>on</strong> their way in the internati<strong>on</strong>al<br />
community . They have a destructive impact <strong>on</strong> the affected nati<strong>on</strong>al <strong>and</strong><br />
regi<strong>on</strong>al societies. Some of the global c<strong>on</strong>sequences are an increasing number<br />
of refugees <strong>and</strong> internal displaced people, a c<strong>on</strong>stant flow of emigrants, the<br />
increase of illegal transnati<strong>on</strong>al ec<strong>on</strong>omies (drugs, weap<strong>on</strong>s, minerals, people)<br />
<strong>and</strong> a competiti<strong>on</strong> am<strong>on</strong>g social groups for escarce natural resources.<br />
The media plays a crucial role providing informati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> these crisis both <strong>on</strong> the<br />
domestic <strong>and</strong> the internati<strong>on</strong>al level. Given the global ec<strong>on</strong>omic, political <strong>and</strong><br />
cultural reach Europe has achieved, the quality <strong>and</strong> fairness of the informati<strong>on</strong><br />
produced by the media <strong>on</strong> the roots <strong>and</strong> developments of these c<strong>on</strong>flicts are of<br />
great importance. But informati<strong>on</strong> it's not <strong>on</strong>ly produced by the media: the<br />
Academic world, the NGOs <strong>and</strong> the local actors are all producers of informati<strong>on</strong>.<br />
This <str<strong>on</strong>g>Seminar</str<strong>on</strong>g> will explore the relati<strong>on</strong>ship am<strong>on</strong>g three actors involved in<br />
modern armed c<strong>on</strong>flicts at different levels: journalists, scholars <strong>and</strong> n<strong>on</strong><br />
academic experts <strong>and</strong> NGOs. The aim of the seminar is to find better ways to<br />
interc<strong>on</strong>nect their work in the different fields in order to provide a better public<br />
<strong>and</strong> formal educati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> armed c<strong>on</strong>flicts, its roots <strong>and</strong> <strong>on</strong> the challenges for<br />
peaceful resoluti<strong>on</strong>.<br />
This will be the first seminar focused <strong>on</strong> the media, public <strong>and</strong> formal educati<strong>on</strong>,<br />
c<strong>on</strong>flicts <strong>and</strong> humanitarian resp<strong>on</strong>ses, in a series organised by Humanitarian<br />
Net.<br />
