This course emphasizes the skills of<br />

reading, writing, speaking and critical<br />

thinking. Reading selections include<br />

short-fiction, non-fiction, drama and<br />

novels. Writing activities include<br />

multi-paragraph composition and<br />

research skills. Students also work<br />

on vocabulary, spelling, grammar and<br />

thinking skills. Special attention will<br />

be given to preparation for the<br />

MCA Reading Test.<br />

Prerequisite: Recommendation<br />

of 9th grade language arts<br />

achievement and completion of<br />

summer reading component. A MAP<br />

score of 231 or above is recommended.<br />

Level: Advanced<br />

This is an interdisciplinary course<br />

designed to develop higher levels of<br />

thinking. Students will engage in<br />

an in-depth study of post-Civil War<br />

American History and Literature.<br />

Students will earn one credit in<br />

Language Arts 10 and one credit in<br />

American History by taking this twoperiod<br />

course. This course emphasizes<br />

critical thinking, writing, reading,<br />

dramatization, speaking, listening,<br />

research and linguistics. Students are<br />

expected to read and comprehend at/or<br />

above grade level and be able to write<br />

logical, cohesive compositions. Students<br />

must be responsible and possess the<br />

self-initiative and discipline to do<br />

extensive reading, long-range<br />

assignments and in-depth research.<br />

This course is also listed in the Social<br />

Studies section. Special attention<br />

will be given to preparation for the<br />

MCA Reading Test.<br />

This elective course focuses on the<br />

historical, social, performance and<br />

technical aspects of drama. The class<br />

will examine the historical elements of<br />

theater, artistic performances, and offer<br />

opportunities to practice dramatic skills.<br />

The class will promote the study and<br />

evaluation of classic film in regard to the<br />

areas of acting, direction, art direction<br />

and screenplay. Students will read plays,<br />

perform skits, write response papers,<br />

and engage in discussion. Successful<br />

completion of this course satisfies<br />

the state requirement for the Arts.<br />

INTRODUCTORY LEVEL<br />

Level: Introductory<br />

This course is a continuation in the<br />

Introductory Language Arts 9-12<br />

course sequence. It emphasizes the<br />

basic development of reading, writing<br />

and thinking skills. Special emphasis<br />

is placed on vocabulary development,<br />

comprehension, study skills, speaking,<br />

listening, and the appreciation and<br />

understanding of literature.<br />

Prerequisite: Language Arts 10<br />

Level: General<br />

This course will strengthen students’<br />

reading, writing, speaking and listening<br />

skills. Each unit will integrate these skills<br />

with a concentrated study of literature.<br />

The American literature selections will<br />

be a mix of traditional, historical, and<br />

multicultural pieces. Students will read<br />

some novels in common and will have<br />

novel choices for independent reading.<br />

Students will continue to refine their<br />

writing skills and will be required to<br />

complete a variety of writing assignments<br />

in order to successfully complete this<br />

course.<br />

HONORS LANGUAGE ARTS 11<br />

Full Year/1 credit Grade 11<br />

Prerequisite: Students will<br />

be recommended for this course<br />

by their 10th grade Language<br />

Arts teacher.<br />

Level: Advanced<br />

Through an intensive study of literature,<br />

with an emphasis on classic American<br />

texts, students in this course will refine<br />

their close reading skills. Students will<br />

improve their writing through a variety<br />

of assignments, focusing primarily on<br />

literary analysis. Through multiple<br />

writing and speaking assignments,<br />

students will learn to develop and<br />

support persuasive arguments.<br />

INTRODUCTORY LEVEL<br />

Prerequisite: Recommendation<br />

of 11th grade Language Arts teacher.<br />

Level: Introductory<br />

This course is the final step in the<br />

Introductory Language Arts 9-12 course<br />

sequence. It is designed to facilitate<br />

student progress toward graduation.<br />

It emphasizes the basic development<br />

of reading, writing and thinking skills.<br />

Special emphasis is placed on the<br />

appreciation and understanding of<br />

literature and applying academic skills<br />

toward further experiences in postsecondary<br />

and workplace environments.<br />
