The Bullish and Bearish Factors -

Industry Affairs The Bullish and Bearish Factors Bondi Luk, vice-chairman of FHKI’s Group 15 (Plastic Products), talks about the bullish and bearish factors affecting the plastic industry. How do you see the development of Hong Kong plastics industry? I believe the industry will see stable growth. On one hand, the advancement of plastics technology leads to wider applications of plastics; while on the other hand, environmental concerns are posing great pressure on the use of plastic products. How does the advancement of plastics technology help widen applications? Big chemical companies like BASF are developing new plastic materials that could be used in many industries. The automotive industry is set to be a major industry driving the growth of plastics demand as plastics is replacing metals as the raw material for autoparts. In fact, the replacement contributes to energy conservation. The use of plastic autoparts helps cut the weight of automobiles, reducing fuel consumption and emission. Plastics is increasingly used in building construction as well. Plastics has high tensile strength and is rust resistance, making it a suitable material to make water pipes. The promotion of energy conservation also leads to the use of plastic materials like polyurethane (PRU) and expanded polystyrene (EPS) in building construction in northern China where winters are extremely cold. These materials are effective in cold insulation. With the technology that allows electroplating on plastics, the use of plastics is expanded further. The metal coatings allow non-conductive plastics to exhibit conductive properties. Besides, many precision electronic components are now made of plastics given its improved properties. Some environmental groups have named plastic bags and packaging as the culprit of pollution. What is your view? Plastics has long been a raw material used in many industries. Its relatively low cost, high quality and wide applications have made it a popular material used for disposable bags and packaging. We have to understand that plastics itself does not contribute to environmental pollution, it is the consumption pattern of modern people that causes pollution. If people do not change their consumption pattern, pollution will persist even if other materials are chosen to replace plastics. So banning plastic bags or plastic packaging will not solve the problem. 26 2008/Mar Hongkong Industrialist 香 港 工 業 家
