<strong>Challenges</strong> perceived as important <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> future <strong>of</strong><br />

will seek to balance national<br />

perceptions.<br />

Generic behavioral skills -“know how”- are seen more appropriate to<br />

address <strong>the</strong> challenges than knowledge. Generic contextual skills score<br />

double that <strong>of</strong> common “globalization attributes” such as <strong>the</strong> practice<br />

<strong>of</strong> languages, read<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>for</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational relocation, or multicultural<br />

address<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> grand challenges as well as develop<strong>in</strong>g an awareness<br />

The purpose <strong>of</strong> SPEED (Student Plat<strong>for</strong>m <strong>for</strong> <strong>Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g</strong><br />

Education Development) is to advance eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g education<br />

(EE) by provid<strong>in</strong>g a plat<strong>for</strong>m <strong>for</strong> global communication<br />

among students and o<strong>the</strong>r stakeholders. Build<strong>in</strong>g a support<br />

network <strong>for</strong> students and empower<strong>in</strong>g students <strong>in</strong>terested<br />

<strong>in</strong> EE to take action locally and globally to improve <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

own educational environments. By facilitat<strong>in</strong>g student action<br />

<strong>in</strong> this manner, SPEED provides a necessary perspective<br />

to EE policymakers to promote an EE system that is<br />

productive, <strong>in</strong>clusive, and <strong>for</strong>ward-th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g. To achieve this<br />

purpose, actions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> group <strong>in</strong>clude <strong>the</strong> organization <strong>of</strong><br />

and provid<strong>in</strong>g resources <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

When extrapolated to equal male/female populations, <strong>the</strong> result<strong>in</strong>g<br />

rank<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> challenges <strong>in</strong> a top three selection <strong>of</strong> importance shows <strong>the</strong><br />

nature <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> gender gap. At one end, 74% <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> votes <strong>for</strong> “provid<strong>in</strong>g<br />

energy from fusion” come from men, <strong>the</strong> rest from women. At <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

end, “advanced health <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>matics” receives 60% <strong>of</strong> its score from<br />

women and 40% from male.<br />

The perception <strong>of</strong> importance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> challenges is <strong>in</strong>deed gender<br />

sensitive.
