Heading to your alternate residence soon?
It is almost that time of the year when many Lake Barrington Shores
could notify the LBS Management Office of your forwarding
address and telephone number before leaving. Also indicate if your
Shorelines should be sent to this alternate address. Some mail
cannot be forwarded, like coupon books for instance. Often times
mail is returned to us as undeliverable. When you return, just give
us a call telling us that you are back. Thanks!
LBS Book Club
THE LEOPARD by Guiseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa
will be our discussion book on November 5th. As
Sicily struggles to adjust to Giuseppe Garibaldi’s unification
efforts, Don Fabrizio, Prince of Salina, lover of
astronomy and scion of an aristocratic family, must
face, accept, and manage dramatic change in virtually
every aspect of his private world. Tancredi, the
nephew on whose shoulders the burden of embracing
the future chiefly falls, sagely and famously
observes, “If we want things to stay as they are, things
will have to change.”
UNBROKEN, Barrington Area Library’s 2013 “One
Book One Barrington” feature, is our discussion book
for December 3rd. Author Laura Hillenbrand’s writing
style has been called, “cinematic,” “meticulous,”
and “mesmerizing,” all of which she applies to relate
the true story of Louis Zamparini, Olympic runner,
WWII Army Air Force bombardier, and aircraft crash
survivor. Following 47 harrowing days on a raft in the
Pacific, Zamparini had to dig even deeper inside himself
to generate Homeric mental strength, in order to
survive his 2-year internment by the Japanese and
the barbaric conditions he had to endure.
Discussion details: November 5th, 10:00 AM,
Fireplace Room, LBS Activity Center. Questions?
Niners’ News
The lyricist who mused (paraphrasing) that “it’s a long, long time from May to September” was obviously NOT a golfer. This
SEPT. 6—BABE ZAHARIAS DAY was a huge success, chaired by Kathleen Voigt. We, as a small group, were able to send
There are many characters in this play,
Thursday Night Bridge
When all is said and done, you play bridge to have fun, and so
does your partner. You’ve done your job if your partner leaves
the table happy.
The September first place winners were: John Putta, Joe Zaksas,
Sally Roberts and Robert Broda. The snowbirds have departed
until next spring. We need six new players to continue our five
The Nine and Diners ended the golf season with fond
memories of the golf year. The number of new members
this year was truly impressive and encourages everyone to
look forward to next year and a new golf season. The golf
itself was great fun, but the getting-together afterwards
for drinks, appetizers and dinner was phenomenal. In
September we enjoyed an Octoberfest and a final parting
dinner during which Chef Mark cooked up a storm for us
and everyone danced to our live music. All of the staff did
their best to make the season memorable and they succeeded—it
was memorable! Looking forward to next season—there’s
more to come!
LBS Sailing Association
The LBS Sailing Club held 40 races in 2012. That is a new record. There
were no weather cancellations, and no curtailed race dates. Racers
included Dan Brockman who participated in 36 races followed by Sandy
Smith who raced 32 times. Mel Smith raced 27 times and LBSSA Treasurer
Bob Broda raced 26 times. Blair Zell raced 25 times in 2012, and won the
best New Sailor award for the year for his commitment and effort.
Mel Smith took 17 firsts, 3 seconds and 2 thirds to win the Nugent Trophy
with a perfect record in his best 12 races and also took first place for the
entire season. Dan Brockman took 8 firsts, 4 seconds and 12 thirds in the
season to win both second place in the Nugent and for the season. Sandy
Smith won 6 races, came in second in 5 and third in 8 races and won third
place in the Nugent and for the season.
New member sailors Sam Swisher and Mark Gibson both did well and are
a threat for next season’s competitions. Joe Kleifges raced 16 times, a new
record for him. Other racers included Javier Suarez with 16 races.
The grand awards party was held on Saturday, October 13th, in the
Fireplace Room and the Ballroom. Members and guests enjoyed the
catered dinner and trophy presentations. It was an exciting end to the
Landscape
November, trees are casting their autumn color concluding
a long campaign of seasonal strife. Winter is just around
the corner. It is the conclusion of another landscape
season; remembered for the mild winter, an early spring
and the hot summer, all joined by a long dry spell that continues
with sporadic relief.
Landscape crews, because of the weather, started early
cleaning up the confetti of fallen leaves. Following the final
clean-up of the season in the central zone, condos 5, 10, 11,
12 and 13, crews will be spreading bark mulch in the shrub
beds and tree rings. Planting crews are completing the
approved landscape enhancements—new trees and shrub
plantings identified through condo landscape inspections.
The arborist, The Care of Trees, was awarded a 5-year
contract to continue the tree maintenance program at LBS
in September. They have preserved the trees since the midseventies,
hired to protect the trees during construction,
and they will continue to maintain the community trees
through 2017. Currently the crews are working on punch
lists from condo inspections and work-order requests for
pruning and tree removals.
What was predicted to be a mundane season of muddled
color actually turned out to be a beautiful fall. The weather
having cooled, an early frost and an advanced growing
season have combined to reveal the shades of Indian
Summer across the countryside.
Brushstrokes
This year’s weather has certainly not been predictable for our
outdoor painting sessions. But artists are nothing if not
resilient, as proven by the indoor session the rain forced us
into on October 3rd and the resulting seeds we planted for our
next project. Stephanie Frank led us in a discussion of women
on the global scene. Her latest painting of middle-Eastern
women inspired us to begin developing paintings of our own
that reflect the endurance, accomplishments, and universal
sufferings and joys of women in this world. We hope our
eventual exhibit will both reflect the strength of women and be
an inspiration to all who view it.
Do you have a dog, cat or horse that you would like to have
painted by a professional artist? Are you aware of the need for
trained dogs to help veteran amputees live a better life? If so,
please consider consigning one of the artists involved in our
fund raiser for The Tower of Hope that we are holding in conjunction
with the LBS Veteran’s organization. The artist’s fee will
be donated to The Tower of Hope and will be tax deductible.
Contact Kathleen L. McCann, 847-989-8437, or Carol Irons,
847-382-1725, for more information.
On Wednesday, November 7th, Kathleen L. McCann (watercolor),
Maria Ryndak (oil), and Stephanie Frank (acrylic) will
lead Brushstrokes members in a still-life demonstration and
painting session. You are welcome to join us for this autumn
experience. We meet in the LBS ballroom at 10:00am.
can really get to you! One of the best ways that I’ve found to
de-stress is to do water aerobics and then finish it off with 15
minutes in the whirlpool! It really helps! And even if you’re
retired, everyone has some type of stress in their life. So relax,
From Your President
AROUND THE LAKE
At our October meeting, the Master Board voted to send homeowners our proposed budget for 2013 including a 1.5% increase
in assessments as recommended by the Finance Commission.
We continue to closely manage our operating expenses which will decrease slightly in 2013. The assessment increase will provide
funds for proposed infrastructure projects totaling almost $7 million over the next 5 years. Our thanks to Deanna
Loughran, Executive Director, Steve Wyland, Public Works Director, Bill Metzler, Landscape Manager, Jim Jarvis and Bill Brink,
Co-Chairs of the Finance Commission, and our commission volunteers for all of their efforts over the past 6 months in preparing
our budget for 2013 and long range plan for the next 5-years.
This is also a great opportunity for you to learn what is being planned by your individual condo associations as they work on
their budgets for 2013 and plan their own infrastructure repairs, so please attend your condo meetings.
The Board also had the privilege of presenting a check for more than $2,000
raised from the Run the Shores 5K Fun Run/Walk to Cheryl Tanaka of Cuba Cares,
the Cuba Township Food Pantry. Mike Foster, who organized and chaired this
event, and Joan Bennett did the honors, with David Nelson, Supervisor of Cuba
Township, looking on. Mike acknowledged the help received from Loretta
Peterson, Village Clerk, and Jamie Scheppman, our Lifestyle Director.
The Board also approved a new firm to provide public safety services for LBS
beginning next year. U.S. Security Associates (USSA) is the 3rd largest contract
security agency in the country; has more than 4,200 clients; and provides about
150,000 weekly man hours of service in the residential, condominium, apartment,
and gated community industry. USAA has a state of the art Guest Verification
System which will expedite the visitor entry process.
Your Board began the extensive process of reviewing our public safety services last spring. Management prepared a Request
for Proposal (RFP) with the assistance of the Rules and Regulations Commission and the Board. The RFP was mailed to 15 firms
of which 10 firms attended the bidders’ conference and 7 firms submitted formal bids. The Board narrowed the field to four
firms, including the incumbent, Securitas, and personally interviewed each firm before selecting USAA.
Rose Jurczewski, Wentworth Manager, Kathy Losch, our fantastic artist, and I attended the auction of the horses sponsored by
various Barrington area businesses to benefit the Barrington United Way. Our own David Nelson, Condo 9 resident and Cuba
Township Supervisor, did a superb job as the auctioneer. This fundraising effort will provide the United Way with about $50,000
for use in the Barrington area.
If you have not signed up for the alternate electric provider, there is still time to switch before the higher winter electric rates
kick in. Remember that ComEd will continue to provide us with maintenance and repair services. Almost half of LBS’s units are
now signed up! Since there is no cost to sign up and you can change services to another provider at any time, this is a “winwin”
for residents.
Our Village is presenting a question on the November 6th ballot
asking whether we want to authorize the Village to develop an
alternate electric aggregation program similar to our own
program. We encourage everyone to support this proposal which
will provide us with more opportunities to control our electric
costs.
Please mark your calendar: Veteran’s Day services are being
planned by the LBS Veterans for Sunday, November 11th at
11:00am.
I look forward to seeing you all “around the lake.” If you have any
suggestions, or questions, please send an email to me at
Winter Tips From the
Management Office
Since the snow season is here, we request
your help and cooperation in making the
snow removal operations run as smoothly
as possible.
The following is an outline for snow
removal for the season:
1. Snowplowing of main streets (Old Barn
Road, Woodview Road, Shoreline Road
and Oak Hill Road) begins when there
is one inch of snow on the ground.
These roads are plowed continuously
during a heavy snowstorm to keep
them open for emergency vehicles.
2. All other roads are plowed when the
main streets are under control.
3. Snow clearing operations of driveways
shall commence within a reasonable
time from the accumulation of 2 or
more inches of snow. Driveways and
parking areas cannot be plowed if they
are blocked with parked vehicles;
hence, it is imperative to remove all
parked vehicles after a snowfall.
4. If, by the middle or late afternoon on a
snowy day, it appears that your street
or driveway has been missed, please
call the Management Office 382-1660
and leave your name, address and specific
complaint. All complaints are then
given to the contractor for correction.
Remember if NONE of the driveways
are done on your street, you can
assume that the contractor has not yet
reached your area and not that you
have been missed. Driveways will not
be started until the streets are clear
and/or under control, especially during
severe weather conditions such as a
blizzard.
5. Ice build-up on driveways, sidewalks
and stoops from gutter run-off might
be a concern in some areas. Please do
not use salt on your sidewalk or stoop
(concrete) as it will cause pitting of the
concrete; and if salt gets into the
shrubs, the shrubs will most likely die.
Use only sand or ice melters designed
for use on concrete. Please use caution
during continual freezing and thawing
of these areas when walking or driving.
6. If you notice any damage during or
after a snow removal operation caused
by the snow removal personnel, please
report these to the Management Office,
64 Old Barn Road, Lake Barrington, IL
60010 in writing, as soon as possible.
Damage reports cannot be accepted
after the end of the contract term.
Helpful Tips That May
Assist in Avoiding Problems This Winter
1. If you have hoses attached to outside
spigots, disconnect them so
the water does not freeze.
2. If you have outside water spigots,
look inside the unit for the shut off
valves. Turn them off—then reopen
the outside spigot and drain any
excess water.
3. Leave inside water faucets drip on
sub-zero days.
4. Units with garages—shut the garage
door(s) in cold weather. Some Units
have water pipes in the slab of the
garage that can freeze. Lube door
locks, also.
5. If you leave on vacation in cold
weather, please leave the heat set
to at least 55 degrees.
6. Please check your smoke detector(s)
and change the battery if necessary.
7. For safety sake, please shovel the
snow leading to the front door of
your Unit.
Pet Portraits
8. At Christmas time, please use
extreme caution with decorative
lights, especially those placed
around windows. Do not overload
circuits. Make it a safe holiday.
9. It’s time to change the furnace filter
of your Unit. This will keep the Unit
cleaner and save money, not to
mention protecting the furnace
from going out and leaving you
with no heat when it is 40 degrees
below.
10. Do not back your car into the
garage of your Unit to warm up the
car in the garage with the garage
door closed. Fumes from the
exhaust must be allowed to escape
from the building.
Thank you in advance for your
continued cooperation. If you have
any questions, please notify the
Management Office at 847-382-1660.
The Holiday season will soon be here. An
impressive gift suggestion is a pet portrait. By
commissioning one of our artists you will
have a very unique keepsake. You will also be
helping The Tower of Hope. This organization
supplies service dogs for the wounded warriors
returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. All
contributions are totally tax deductible. See the red book at the LBS
Recreation Center office for pet portrait photos and current artists.
